Clinical Pearls
- Rapid malaria tests are useful in the acute setting for determining if a patient has P. falciparum malaria (high negative predictive value). However, blood smears should also be performed on all suspected cases.
- Children with malaria frequently clinically appear to have gastroenteritis or nonspecific viral infections.
- Nonimmune persons with suspected or confirmed P. falciparum malaria are at high risk and must be managed aggressively (i.e., hospitalized).
