Rapid malaria tests are useful in the acute setting for determining if a patient has P. falciparum malaria (high negative predictive value). However, blood smears should also be performed on all suspected cases.
Children with malaria frequently clinically appear to have gastroenteritis or nonspecific viral infections.
Nonimmune persons with suspected or confirmed P. falciparum malaria are at high risk and must be managed aggressively (i.e., hospitalized).
