- A modular python-based pipeline for quantifying vascular bud density at the chondro-osseous border. [Journal Article]Acta Histochem. 2026 Sep 10; 128(4):152373. [Online ahead of print]AH
- Angiogenesis during endochondral ossification is crucial to skeletal development, bone regeneration, and fracture healing. Vascular buds at the chondro-osseous border represent key markers of angiogenic activity. Conventional quantification approaches, such as global vessel density measurements or manual counting of buds, are time-consuming and often lack reproducibility. Therefore, we developed …

- From melanin-positive to melanin-actionable: Spatial pigment phenotyping for precision melanoma phototherapy. [Letter]Acta Histochem. 2026 Sep 09; 128(4):152374. [Online ahead of print]AH
- Stockert and Blázquez-Castro have skilfully changed the perspective on melanin, turning it from a histological pigment to a possible therapeutic substrate in melanoma. However, if melanin is considered a binary and/or spatially uniform property, then translation may be restricted. The amount of pigment, its molecular structure, redox status, and intracellular localization and interactions with li…

- Ultrastructural localization of aquaporin-4 in astrocytic endfeet using immunogold electron microscopy: Implications for cytotoxic brain edema. [Journal Article]Acta Histochem. 2026 Sep 05; 128(4):152369. [Online ahead of print]AH
- Cytotoxic brain edema is a life-threatening condition arising from pathological water accumulation within brain parenchymal cells, primarily astrocytes, following metabolic or toxic insults. Aquaporin-4 (AQP4), the predominant water channel in the central nervous system, is highly enriched in the perivascular endfeet of astrocytes and is considered a key facilitator of bidirectional water flux. D…

- Application of nanomaterials in the detection and therapeutic drug monitoring of Hepatitis B virus. [Review]Acta Histochem. 2026 Sep 04; 128(4):152370. [Online ahead of print]AH
- Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection remains a major global health challenge, requiring accurate diagnostic tools and precise therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) to guide antiviral treatment and prevent disease progression. Conventional laboratory‑based assays, while reliable, are often limited by long turnaround times, high operational costs, and the need for specialized infrastructure. Recent advanc…

- Hydroxyurea and cellular senescence in non-transformed cells. [Review]Acta Histochem. 2026 Sep 01; 128(4):152368. [Online ahead of print]AH
- Hydroxyurea (HU) is a growth-inhibiting agent used to treat conditions characterized by excessive cellular proliferation. As an antimetabolite, HU inhibits ribonucleotide reductase, reducing the deoxyribonucleotide pool and thereby slowing DNA synthesis. Pharmacological inhibition of cell division is closely associated with the development of a cellular senescence phenotype, which may contribute …

- Reduced number of epithelial tuft cells and density of LGR5 expression in the myenteric plexus of the ageing human colon. [Journal Article]Acta Histochem. 2026 Sep 02; 128(4):152371. [Online ahead of print]AH
- CONCLUSIONS: In both regions of human colon, ageing reduced tuft cell abundance in the mucosal epithelium. Ageing also reduced LGR5-IR structures within the ganglionic area in the AC. These structural changes may contribute to age-dependent impairments of neuromodulatory functions of the epithelium and the mechanisms for maintaining myenteric ganglion homeostasis.

- TRIM32 regulates Mycobacterium tuberculosis-induced pyroptosis and mitochondrial dysfunction by regulating TLR4 ubiquitylation. [Journal Article]Acta Histochem. 2026 Aug 31; 128(4):152367. [Online ahead of print]AH
- Tuberculosis (TB), caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M.tb), remains a major global health threat. The tripartite motif (TRIM) family of E3 ligases plays crucial roles in various cellular processes, yet the involvement of TRIM32 in TB remains poorly understood. This study explores the function of TRIM32 in M.tb infection and its underlying mechanisms. We found that M.tb infection significantly…

- Histomorphological characterization of major tissues and organ systems in neotenic Ambystoma mexicanum. [Journal Article]Acta Histochem. 2026 Aug 25; 128(4):152366. [Online ahead of print]AH
- Ambystoma mexicanum has emerged as an important experimental model in regenerative biology due to its remarkable regenerative capacity and neotenic condition. Although histological descriptions of several organs have been previously reported, an integrative characterization of the tissues and organ systems of neotenic axolotls remains limited. To investigate the structural features and cellular o…

- When reporter positivity is not lineage identity: A four-gate validation framework for stress-exposed Cre-loxP histochemistry. [Journal Article]Acta Histochem. 2026 Sep; 128(3):152358.AH
- Cre-loxP systems provide powerful tools for cell-specific manipulation and lineage tracing, but their interpretation depends on the assumption that reporter activation faithfully reflects cell-autonomous recombinase activity. Recent evidence that Cre recombinase protein may transfer from oligodendroglial cells to neurons under pathological stress raises an important methodological question: does …

- Updating melanoma therapy regarding melanin structure: Advances and proposals from biophysics, histochemistry and cell biology. [Review]Acta Histochem. 2026 Sep; 128(3):152355.AH
- Melanin is an ancestral biopigment with strong adaptive value and diverse functions across all phyla. In mammals, melanin appears in the skin, retinal-pigmented epithelium, central nervous system and in the malignant melanoma, one of the most aggressive and therapy-resistant tumors. Owing to the occurrence of melanin in melanomas, structural and physico-chemical properties can be considered to de…

- In situ detection of DNA damage in the mouse hippocampus following status epilepticus induced by kainic acid. [Journal Article]Acta Histochem. 2026 Sep; 128(3):152354.AH
- This study examined the dynamic progression of DNA damage following status epilepticus (SE) using three complementary in situ techniques-PANT, Klenow, and TUNEL-combined with Fluoro-Jade B (FJB) staining in the susceptible hippocampal neurons. SE was induced by intracerebroventricular injection of kainic acid, which triggered early oxidative DNA lesions characterized by single-strand breaks (ssDN…
