- Probability of myopic macular degeneration in dependence on axial length and age: The two-continent eye study. [Journal Article]Acta Ophthalmol. 2026 Oct 09. [Online ahead of print]AO
- CONCLUSIONS: The MMD probability assessment offers a rough estimate of the MMD probability at present and at older age, based on axial length and age. For an axial length of 28 and 30 mm, the probability of MMD stage 3+ at 75 years was 57.5% and 98.5%, respectively.

- Intravitreal faricimab in patients with nAMD: French data from the Fight Retinal Blindness! Registry. [Journal Article]Acta Ophthalmol. 2026 Oct 06. [Online ahead of print]AO
- CONCLUSIONS: Macular neovascularization (MNV) inactivation and modest interval extension were observed in active eyes; inactive eyes showed a larger interval extension. Loading dose was not associated with better outcomes in this observational cohort. Safety was acceptable.

- Impact of retinal break location on surgical outcomes in primary uncomplicated rhegmatogenous retinal detachment: Superior versus inferior breaks. [Journal Article]Acta Ophthalmol. 2026 Oct 06. [Online ahead of print]AO
- CONCLUSIONS: The presence of at least one inferior retinal break was associated with lower 6-month anatomical success and reduced redetachment-free survival. The findings regarding concurrent phacoemulsification and tamponade choice should be interpreted cautiously because of limited subgroup sizes.

- Predictors of visual acuity, intraocular pressure and pain in neovascular glaucoma. [Journal Article]Acta Ophthalmol. 2026 Oct 06. [Online ahead of print]AO
- CONCLUSIONS: Treatments were associated with lower IOP and less pain but not with better BCVA, which baseline severity largely explained. Cryotherapy, seldom reported in NVG, showed comparable associations. IOP control and pain relief may therefore remain realistic goals when visual prognosis is poor. Confounding by indication remains possible.

- Insights into the modulation of age-related macular degeneration: Molecular and systems-level perspectives. [Journal Article]
- In developed countries, age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of visual impairment in the aging population. Understanding of its pathogenesis is limited and the number of patients is predicted to continue rising. AMD is classified into two main forms: dry and neovascular AMD (dAMD and nAMD, respectively). Dry AMD is the most prevalent form (80-90%) of AMD cases and has no ap…

- Aqueous chlorhexidine versus povidone-iodine for ocular antisepsis: A systematic review and meta-analysis. [Review]Acta Ophthalmol. 2026 Oct 01. [Online ahead of print]AO
- This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to compare aqueous chlorhexidine (AqCHX) with povidone-iodine (PI) for ocular antisepsis in preventing post-procedural endophthalmitis (primary outcome) and to evaluate antimicrobial efficacy and patient-reported pain (secondary outcomes). A systematic search of PubMed, Embase and Web of Science was conducted on 26 November 2024 and updated on 25 Jun…

- A genetic and historical perspective on the origins of keratitis fugax hereditaria. [Journal Article]Acta Ophthalmol. 2026 Sep 16. [Online ahead of print]AO
- CONCLUSIONS: The NLRP3 c.61G>C variant likely originated in southwestern Finland and appears to have been present in the population for at least 350 years. Genealogical reconstruction and haplotype analysis support a single ancestral origin, followed by lineage-specific divergence and regional expansion. In the context of Finland's population history, these findings indicate long-term regional enrichment of the variant and provide a historical framework for understanding its present-day distribution.

- CONCLUSIONS: Repeated intravitreal panitumumab applications in various doses, single or combined with ranibizumab, were not associated with severe ocular or systemic side effects.

- Longitudinal progression of retinal nonperfusion in clinically stable diabetic retinopathy. [Journal Article]Acta Ophthalmol. 2026 Sep 15. [Online ahead of print]AO
- CONCLUSIONS: Peripheral NP, as quantified by NPI on UWF-FA, progresses over time despite apparent clinical stability of DR. In contrast, macular OCTA parameters remain unchanged. These findings suggest that peripheral iscahemic changes may occur earlier than detectable macular microvascular alterations and support the potential role of NPI as a quantitative imaging marker of retinal ischemia in DR.

- Accelerated biological ageing is associated with a large drusen burden. [Journal Article]Acta Ophthalmol. 2026 Sep 14. [Online ahead of print]AO
- CONCLUSIONS: Accelerated biological ageing was associated with increased drusen burden, but not pigmentary abnormalities, suggesting that early structural features of AMD may reflect broader systemic ageing processes.

- Neovascular glaucoma at a tertiary Centre in Finland, 2008-2024: A retrospective cohort study. [Journal Article]Acta Ophthalmol. 2026 Sep 11. [Online ahead of print]AO
- CONCLUSIONS: The estimated NVG incidence was lower than previously reported elsewhere. Unlike other cohorts where DR predominates, CRVO was the most common aetiology and visual prognosis was strongly aetiology-dependent. Glaucoma drainage device surgery reached 8% at 3 years, despite the severity and refractory nature of NVG.

- Clinical outcomes of the PAUL® glaucoma implant for secondary glaucoma. [Journal Article]Acta Ophthalmol. 2026 Sep 09. [Online ahead of print]AO
- CONCLUSIONS: The PGI was associated with effective and sustained IOP reduction across a heterogeneous population of secondary glaucoma, with an acceptable complication profile in this retrospective cohort. These findings support the PGI as a useful surgical option for complex secondary glaucoma, although controlled comparative studies are needed to define its relative role among established GDDs.

- Impact of faricimab and high-dose aflibercept on treatment demand in a tertiary ophthalmic centre in Norway. [Journal Article]Acta Ophthalmol. 2026 Sep 08. [Online ahead of print]AO
- CONCLUSIONS: The introduction of faricimab and high-dose aflibercept was associated with reduced per-patient treatment intensity, while the treated population continued to increase. Longer-acting anti-VEGF drugs may reduce pressure on retinal services by lowering injection frequency; however, their introduction was associated with higher overall costs.

- Exploration of the relevancy of nutritional knowledge and self-perceived nutrition competency of the UK Optometric Workforce. [Journal Article]Acta Ophthalmol. 2026 Sep 04. [Online ahead of print]AO
- CONCLUSIONS: UK optometrists have a very positive attitude towards providing nutritional care. However, there is a lack of training which impacts confidence and ultimately patient advice. Within the current framework of the UK National Health Service and its focus to make every contact count, it is paramount to implement more nutritional training.
