- Cognitive flexibility as a bridge between depressive symptoms and problematic smartphone use in adolescents: A two-wave network analysis across depression-severity groups. [Journal Article]Addict Behav. 2026 Oct 06; 185:108875. [Online ahead of print]AB
- The co-occurrence of depressive symptoms and problematic smartphone use (PSU) in adolescents poses a growing public health concern, but its component-level conditional associations, cross-wave patterns, and variation across depression-severity groups remain insufficiently understood. Using a two-wave observational design with a 12-month interval (N = 1200 students from one high school in a county…

- Exploring the relationship between avoidance coping and cannabis use among black pregnant women. [Journal Article]Addict Behav. 2026 Oct 01; 184:108872. [Online ahead of print]AB
- CONCLUSIONS: Findings underscore the importance of promoting adaptive coping strategies and addressing psychological stress in culturally responsive health interventions to reduce reliance on prenatal cannabis use.

- Non-alcoholic beer consumption among alcohol consumers in the US. [Journal Article]Addict Behav. 2026 Sep 25; 184:108865. [Online ahead of print]AB
- CONCLUSIONS: Many regular alcohol consumers have consumed or are interested in consuming non-alcoholic beer. People may consume non-alcoholic beer to reduce their alcohol intake, which could potentially benefit public health.

- Increasing cannabis use among U.S. Adults: Greater growth among historically lower-use groups, BRFSS 2016-2024. [Journal Article]Addict Behav. 2026 Sep 25; 184:108863. [Online ahead of print]AB
- CONCLUSIONS: Cannabis use increased across all subgroups from 2016 to 2024, with larger relative gains among historically lower-use groups. Among those reporting past 30-day use, frequency of use also increased over time, although patterns of frequency varied across demographic and behavioral characteristics. These findings indicate broad-based but uneven changes in cannabis use across U.S. adult populations.

- Drinking, cannabis use and mental health as predictors of within-person changes in aggression over eight weeks among youth involved with binge drinking. [Journal Article]Addict Behav. 2026 Sep 26; 184:108870. [Online ahead of print]AB
- CONCLUSIONS: Given these associations, findings suggest that aggression prevention interventions may benefit from focusing on substance use and mental health symptoms, while enhancing social support. Findings extend prior work by identifying temporally proximate within-person associations with aggression to inform adaptive interventions.

- Daily associations among protective behavioral strategies, alcohol use, and consequences in a sample of adolescents and young adults: The influence of drinking context and neighborhood disadvantage. [Journal Article]Addict Behav. 2026 Sep 25; 184:108864. [Online ahead of print]AB
- CONCLUSIONS: Drinking games and neighborhood disadvantage significantly moderated PBS-outcome associations, suggesting PBS effectiveness is selectively sensitive to certain high-risk situational and structural contexts. These findings indicate PBS vary day-to-day, highlighting the importance of targeting specific contexts where strategies may be less protective to inform tailored, context-responsive interventions.

- Early maladaptive schemas and four problematic excessive behaviors: Cross-sectional indirect associations involving desire thinking and craving. [Journal Article]Addict Behav. 2026 Sep 23; 184:108869. [Online ahead of print]AB
- Problematic gambling, problematic gaming, problematic social media use, and problematic pornography use differ in nosological status but may share some psychological correlates. The present cross-sectional study examined associations between early maladaptive schemas (EMSs) and these four problematic excessive behaviors, and compared theory-informed serial and parallel indirect-effect specificati…

- Cannabis use and route-specific administration among U.S. adults who do and do not use tobacco: Findings from the 2024 Health Information National Trends Survey. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: In 2024, nearly 1 in 2 adults who currently used tobacco reported using cannabis. Current tobacco use was significantly associated with increased likelihood of past 12-month cannabis use. Continued surveillance and research on the interplay of cannabis and tobacco use is needed to understand co-use health effects.

- Perceived social norms and video gaming in emerging adults: A cross-sectional investigation. [Journal Article]Addict Behav. 2026 Sep 25; 184:108871. [Online ahead of print]AB
- CONCLUSIONS: Findings extend the social norms literature to problematic gaming and identify perceived norms as a correlate of problem gaming in emerging adults. Longitudinal/intervention research is needed to clarify the direction of these associations and evaluate whether personalized normative feedback may help reduce problem gaming.

- CONCLUSIONS: Findings provide support for the validity of the DSM-5 severity indicators of CUD. Results further suggest that moderate and severe CUD appear to be a better reflection of the theory-based conception of the disorder than mild CUD within adults with chronic cannabis use.

- Menstrual cyclicity of cannabis use: a longitudinal study using phase-aligned cycle time scaling (PACTS). [Journal Article]Addict Behav. 2026 Sep 21; 184:108866. [Online ahead of print]AB
- CONCLUSIONS: The findings suggest that the quantity of dried cannabis flower used fluctuates meaningfully across the menstrual cycle and is shaped by daily affective symptoms of PMDs. If replicated, these findings highlight the importance of incorporating menstrual cycle timing and PMD symptoms into prevention and treatment strategies for cannabis use.

- Mapping the dimensional architecture of adolescent problematic smartphone use: a network and bayesian analysis of comorbid psychopathology and sleep disturbances. [Journal Article]Addict Behav. 2026 Sep 05; 184:108848. [Online ahead of print]AB
- CONCLUSIONS: Adolescent PSU is integrated into an extensive multidomain system consisting of psychopathological and sleep variables. Withdrawal symptoms stand out via widespread overall connectivity, and emotional problems dominate cross-domain linkage, representing two distinct structural roles. The probabilistic variable sequences derived from Bayesian directed acyclic graphs only provide testable hypotheses for longitudinal research rather than definitive causal evidence. This study highlights the necessity of developmentally tailored assessments and pinpoints core dimensions worthy of prospective tracking as promising targets for adolescent PSU prevention and intervention.

- CONCLUSIONS: Binge drinking inequities were largely explained by grade, race/ethnicity, sex, and sexual identity, although intersectional interaction effects remained. Findings call for proportionate universal public health interventions with a focus on high-risk groups.

- CONCLUSIONS: Abnormal theta oscillation-DMN network correlates with IA in adolescent MDD patients, and the mediating role of theta oscillation provides a new perspective for understanding the neural mechanism of this comorbidity.

- Time-varying mediation effects of health warning labels on smoking cessation-related cognition and behavior: Evidence from a randomized trial using ecological momentary assessment. [Journal Article]Addict Behav. 2026 Sep 11; 184:108860. [Online ahead of print]AB
- CONCLUSIONS: Inserts gradually increased both cognitive elaboration of quitting benefits and forgoing cigarettes, with mediation of insert effects by cognitive elaboration peaking after one week, then declining. These findings suggest that additional communication strategies, perhaps using different channels, may be necessary to boost HWL effects on cessation-related behaviors that are mediated through the pathway of cognitive elaboration of cessation benefits.
