- COVID-19 pandemic-related changes in utilization of telehealth and treatment overall for alcohol use problems. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: The transition to telehealth in this healthcare system may have attracted subgroups of individuals who have historically underutilized care for alcohol use problems, particularly younger and healthier adults, without exacerbating pre-pandemic racial and ethnic disparities in treatment utilization.

- The relationship between fathers' heavy episodic drinking and fathering involvement in five Asia-Pacific countries: An individual participant data meta-analysis. [Meta-Analysis]
- CONCLUSIONS: Heavy episodic drinking was associated with reduced positive fathering involvement. These findings suggest that interventions to increase fathers' involvement in parenting should include targeting reductions in fathers' HED. Structural barriers to fathers' involvement should be considered alongside HED in future studies of fathers' engagement with their children.

- Screening for hazardous alcohol use in the Emergency Department: Comparison of phosphatidylethanol with the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test and the Timeline Follow-back. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: AUDIT scores were moderately correlated with PEth values in the general ED population. In almost all cases where there was not a good correlation, patients had high PEth values with low AUDIT scores. We conclude that PEth identifies patients with problematic alcohol use who are missed by the AUDIT questionnaire and therefore PEth could be used as an additional screening method for hazardous alcohol use in this population.

- Combination treatment with varenicline and naltrexone reduces World Health Organization risk drinking levels. [Randomized Controlled Trial]
- CONCLUSIONS: These findings provide evidence that combined varenicline plus naltrexone treatment is effective at reducing WHO risk drinking levels, particularly among individuals who smoke cigarettes daily and drink heavily. These results add to a growing body of literature validating reductions in WHO risk drinking levels as outcomes of alcohol medication trials.

- College students' virtual and in-person drinking contexts during the COVID-19 pandemic. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: The proportion and frequency of drinking in certain contexts changed during the COVID-19 pandemic, although drinking outside the home represented the highest risk drinking context across the pandemic. Future prevention and intervention efforts may benefit from considering approaches specific to different drinking contexts.

- Does state repeal of alcohol exclusion laws increase problem drinking? [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: This study found no evidence supporting the idea that repealing AELs increased alcohol consumption or binge drinking. Future studies should consider other state-specific dimensions within the Uniform Accident and Sickness Policy Provision Law.

- Alcohol use disorder as a potential risk factor for COVID-19 severity: A narrative review. [Review]
- In Dec. 2019-January 2020, a pneumonia illness originating in Wuhan, China, designated as coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was shown to be caused by a novel RNA coronavirus designated as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). People with advanced age, male sex, and/or underlying health conditions (obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, chronic ki…

- Adolescent (mis)perceptions of peer alcohol posts on social media: Prospective associations with alcohol attitudes and use. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: Adolescents misperceived the frequency of alcohol-related posting to social media among their peers, and perceptions of friend alcohol content posts prospectively predicted alcohol use. Given the results from the current study and the ubiquity of social media among adolescents, prevention efforts may benefit from addressing misperceptions of alcohol-related posting to social media.

- Chronic ethanol consumption exacerbates future stress-enhanced fear learning, an effect mediated by dorsal hippocampal astrocytes. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: Collectively, results indicate that prior EtOH dependence and withdrawal combined with a severe stressor potentiate future enhanced fear learning. Furthermore, DH astrocytes significantly contribute to this change in behavior. Overall, these studies provide insight into the comorbidity of AUD and PTSD and the potential neurobiological mechanisms behind increased susceptibility to a PTSD-like phenotype in individuals with AUD.

- All-cause and liver-related mortality risk factors in excessive drinkers: Analysis of data from the UK biobank. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: People with chronic excessive alcohol intake experience decreased average survival, but there is substantial variation in their mortality, with liver abnormality and alcohol dependence or other alcohol use disorders associated with a worse prognosis. Clinically, patients with these risk factors and high alcohol intake should be considered for early or intensive management. Research can usefully focus on the factors predisposing to dependence or liver abnormality.

- Role of the ghrelin system in alcohol use disorder and alcohol-associated liver disease: A narrative review. [Review]
- Unhealthy alcohol consumption is a global health problem. Adverse individual, public health, and socioeconomic consequences are attributable to harmful alcohol use. Epidemiological studies have shown that alcohol use disorder (AUD) and alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD) are the top two pathologies among alcohol-related diseases. Consistent with the major role that the liver plays in alcohol m…

- Alcohol-related dysmorphic features as predictors of neurodevelopmental delay in infants and preschool-aged children: Results from a birth cohort in Ukraine. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: Predictive analysis based on dysmorphic features and measures of growth performed modestly in this sample. As these features are more reliably measured than neurodevelopment at an earlier age, the inclusion of dysmorphic features and measures of growth in predictive models should be further explored and validated in different settings and populations.

- Effects of ethanol on GluN1/GluN2A and GluN1/GluN2B NMDA receptor-ion channel gating kinetics. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: These results demonstrate that ethanol selectively alters individual kinetic rates and thus appears to selectively affect distinct conformational transitions involved in NMDAR gating.

- CONCLUSIONS: Paternal alcohol exposure prior to conception has sex- and task-dependent effects on unconditioned behaviors in their offspring.

- Alcohol impairs recognition and uptake of Mycobacterium tuberculosis by suppressing toll-like receptor 2 expression. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: Chronic alcohol ingestion reduces TLR2 protein expression and phagocytosis of Mtb, likely due to impaired GM-CSF signaling. GM-CSF restores membrane-bound TLR2 expression and phagocytic function.
