- Circulating NOX2 and risk of cardiovascular events in the general population: results from the Moli-sani study. [Journal Article]Atherosclerosis. 2026 Oct 21; 423:121918. [Online ahead of print]A
- Oxidative stress plays a central role in atherosclerosis, yet prospective population-based evidence linking specific enzymatic sources of reactive oxygen species to cardiovascular disease (CVD) is limited. NADPH oxidase 2 (NOX2) is a major source of vascular oxidative stress, but its prognostic value in the general population remains unclear. We conducted a case-cohort study nested within the Mol…

- Associations between vascular aging and 12 lipid composite indices: A large cross-sectional study. [Journal Article]Atherosclerosis. 2026 Sep 02; 423:121897. [Online ahead of print]A
- CONCLUSIONS: Among the 12 lipid composite indices evaluated, TyG-especially when combined with age-demonstrated the strongest predictive value for vascular aging in this large Chinese population, suggesting it may serve as a low-incremental-cost preliminary screening marker. However, prospective validation and intervention trials are needed to confirm the threshold and to determine whether lowering TyG attenuates vascular aging and subsequent CVD risk.

- Macrophage-derived TNF-α promotes vascular inflammation and cell crosstalk in human atherosclerotic plaques via TNFRSF1A. [Journal Article]Atherosclerosis. 2026 Nov; 422:121924.A
- CONCLUSIONS: These findings delineate the spatial and functional landscape of AS plaques and reveal a conserved, spatially constrained mechanism: macrophage-derived TNF-α drives TNFRSF1A-dependent vascular injury, inflammatory amplification, and foam cell formation, highlighting this axis as a promising therapeutic target for atherosclerotic diseases.

- PlGF modulates vascular smooth muscle cells phenotype to enhance atherosclerotic plaque stability. [Journal Article]Atherosclerosis. 2026 Nov; 422:121929.A
- CONCLUSIONS: This study identifies a PlGF/anti-inflammatory macrophage/TGF-β1/contractile VSMCs signaling axis that reinforces fibrous cap integrity and promotes plaque stability in advanced atherosclerosis.

- Association between elevated lipoprotein (a) and venous thromboembolism: A systematic review and meta-analysis. [Systematic Review]Atherosclerosis. 2026 Nov; 422:121922.A
- CONCLUSIONS: The association between elevated Lp(a) and VTE appears limited to case-control studies and is not supported by prospective cohort data, suggesting potential bias or residual confounding. Further large-scale and genetic studies are warranted to clarify this relationship.

- Blood proteome-wide Mendelian randomization reveals molecular pleiotropy in coronary artery disease. [Journal Article]Atherosclerosis. 2026 Nov; 422:121923.A
- CONCLUSIONS: Integrative analyses presented here provide evidence for the involvement of 29 blood proteins in CAD. Those candidate proteins take part directly or through pleiotropic effects in functions pertaining to cell migration-differentiation, inflammation and metabolism.

- Association of beta-blocker therapy with outcomes after ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction stratified by GRACE risk score: A nationwide registry analysis. [Multicenter Study]Atherosclerosis. 2026 Nov; 422:121919.A
- CONCLUSIONS: Among STEMI survivors treated with contemporary PCI, associations between beta-blocker use at discharge and outcomes varied according to baseline GRACE risk. No statistically significant association was observed in low-risk individuals (GRACE <85), whereas the association with lower mortality was most evident in the intermediate-risk group (GRACE 85-179). These hypothesis-generating findings warrant evaluation in randomized trials before being used to guide treatment decisions.

- Development and external validation of a non-laboratory model to predict early-onset cardiovascular disease risk: a multicohort machine learning study. [Multicenter Study]Atherosclerosis. 2026 Nov; 422:121920.A
- CONCLUSIONS: P-EOCVD provides questionnaire-based risk stratification for incident EOCVD and subsequent mortality. Its low precision precludes diagnostic use. The model may support first-step screening where laboratory testing is not immediately available, but prospective validation and recalibration are required before use in under-resourced populations.
