- CONCLUSIONS: Findings raise the possibility that LT4 therapy may be a factor in bone loss, particularly among women in late-middle and early old-age. Even the potential for a deleterious effect should be included in a pragmatic assessment of LT4 treatment indications and monitoring to avoid overtreatment in vulnerable populations.

- Osteoblast-derived nerve growth factor supports skeletal adaptation to mechanical load and the osteoanabolic effect of gambogic amide in mice. [Journal Article]
- In adult mice, new bone accrual following mechanical load is mediated by the neurotrophin nerve growth factor (NGF) that is expressed by osteoblasts on the bone surface. NGF can bind to its high affinity receptor, neurotrophic tyrosine kinase receptor type 1 (TrkA), on peripheral sensory nerves resident in bone and support new bone formation. However, the osteoanabolic therapeutic potential of NG…

- Serial comparison of a predefined ultrasonographic cortical bridging appearance and conventional radiography in tibial fractures after intramedullary nailing: A prospective comparative cohort study. [Journal Article]Bone. 2026 Sep 16; :118093. [Online ahead of print]BONE
- CONCLUSIONS: At 6 weeks, the predefined sonographic cortical bridging appearance was observed more frequently than radiographic bridging, with the two modalities converging during later follow-up. Because the sonographic appearance was not histologically validated or correlated with CT at the same cortical surface, it should be regarded as a descriptive imaging finding rather than proof of osseous union or mechanical stability. Ultrasonography may play a complementary role in early assessment, while conventional radiography remains important for structural assessment and confirmation of established union.

- Alendronate alters mineral composition and has potential to restore enthesis strength without preventing trabecular bone loss during unloading of the supraspinatus enthesis. [Journal Article]Bone. 2026 Sep 16; 214:118098. [Online ahead of print]BONE
- Prolonged unloading of the shoulder, most seen after stroke related hemiparesis, accelerates degeneration of the supraspinatus enthesis in part through localized bone loss at the tendon to bone interface. Because bisphosphonates are often used in populations experiencing disuse, it remains unclear whether they can mitigate bone deterioration at the supraspinatus enthesis. In this study, we examin…

- The associations of obesity and other covariates with bone turnover markers in children and adolescents. [Journal Article]Bone. 2026 Sep 16; 213:118092. [Online ahead of print]BONE
- CONCLUSIONS: Obesity-related differences in bone turnover varied across age groups, and the observed pattern may be broadly consistent with previously reported obesity-related differences in height velocity.

- A conceptual model of a pathway from osteoporosis to atherosclerosis: A scoping review. [Review]Bone. 2026 Sep 16; 214:118097. [Online ahead of print]BONE
- CONCLUSIONS: Evidence exists supporting biological pathways that can transition from osteoporotic bone loss to atherosclerotic vascular calcification. High bone resorption appears to be a factor in the development of atherosclerotic vascular calcification. These findings provide a conceptual framework to view both conditions. However, more work is needed to better define these pathways and their relative importance.

- PHOSPHO1 deficiency delays osteogenic differentiation of osteoblasts, impairing mineralization and altering the protein composition of matrix vesicles. [Journal Article]Bone. 2026 Sep 15; 213:118096. [Online ahead of print]BONE
- Matrix vesicles (MVs), a specialized class of extracellular vesicles, play a central role in skeletal mineralization. Phosphoethanolamine/phosphocholine phosphatase 1 (PHOSPHO1) generates inorganic phosphate (Pi) within the MV lumen and is considered essential for the initiation of mineralization. This study investigated the role of PHOSPHO1 in osteoblast differentiation and MV biology using prim…

- Skeletal effects of 5-year high-dose cyclical etidronate in patients with pseudoxanthoma elasticum. [Journal Article]Bone. 2026 Sep 15; 214:118088. [Online ahead of print]BONE
- Pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE) is a rare genetic disease characterized by ectopic calcification in the eyes, skin, and arteries. It is caused by pathogenic variants in the ABCC6 gene and leads to reduced plasma levels of inorganic pyrophosphate. Etidronate, a stable analogue of pyrophosphate, has been shown to reduce arterial calcification. However, the long-term skeletal safety of high-dose cycl…

- Autosomal recessive hypophosphatemic rickets type 2 (ARHR2) is a rare metabolic bone disorder caused by biallelic loss-of-function variants in ENPP1, the gene encoding for Ectonucleotide pyrophosphatase/phosphodiesterase 1 (ENPP1), an enzyme essential for generating extracellular pyrophosphate, a key endogenous inhibitor of ectopic calcification. The clinical spectrum of ENPP1 deficiency varies w…

- Low-intensity vibration (LIV) is a non-invasive mechanical stimulus capable of regulating skeletal adaptation and bone remodeling cellular signaling pathways. This study sought to synthesize the effects of different LIV frequencies and intensities on bone volume fraction (B…

- Pycnodysostosis (PYCD) is a rare genetic bone disease characterized by impaired osteoclastic bone resorption. The inability to resorb bone leads to sclerosis, with increased bone mineral density (BMD) but paradoxically increased bone fragility. We report a case of a young female with PYCD with multiple fragility fractures including bilateral atypical femur fractures (AFF). Areal and volumetric bo…
