- Gestational and congenital syphilis in a Brazilian harbor city: A population-based study of prevalence, determinants, and adverse neonatal outcomes. [Journal Article]Braz J Infect Dis. 2026 Sep 30; 30(5):105969. [Online ahead of print]BJ
- CONCLUSIONS: Gestational syphilis was strongly associated with socioeconomic vulnerability and behavioral factors. Congenital syphilis remained independently associated with fetal or neonatal death, reinforcing the need for early prenatal access, repeated screening, timely maternal and partner treatment, and strengthened surveillance to reduce vertical transmission.

- Geospatial inequalities in severe leprosy disability in Pernambuco before and during COVID-19. [Journal Article]Braz J Infect Dis. 2026 Sep 30; 30(5):105968. [Online ahead of print]BJ
- CONCLUSIONS: During the period from 2020 to 2022, the COVID-19 pandemic was associated with significant changes in most leprosy indicators, suggesting an increase in morbidity in the state of Pernambuco, Brazil. Despite the reduction in new leprosy cases due to mobility restrictions, the overburdening of the public health system, and the suspension of active case finding, particularly affecting children and vulnerable populations, there was an increase in hidden prevalence, treatment delays, and disabilities. The behavior of the epidemic in the state of Pernambuco was similar to that observed in Brazil, reinforcing the country's position as the second most affected by leprosy in the world.

- Persistent low-level viremia and symptomatic HIV cerebrospinal fluid escape in a person living with HIV receiving darunavir: a case report. [Case Reports]Braz J Infect Dis. 2026 Sep 26; 30(5):105970. [Online ahead of print]BJ
- HIV Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF) viral escape is a condition characterized by inadequate virological control within the CSF despite systemic antiretroviral therapy, often assessed through discordant CSF and plasma HIV viral loads. The clinical relevance of CSF viral escape remains poorly understood, but it is thought to contribute to a spectrum of neurological and neurocognitive manifestations. The …

- Pseudotumoral donovanosis mimicking squamous cell carcinoma in a patient with HIV infection. [Case Reports]Braz J Infect Dis. 2026 Sep 26; 30(5):105971. [Online ahead of print]BJ
- Donovanosis is a chronic granulomatous sexually transmitted infection that may clinically mimic malignancy. We report a 64-year-old man with well-controlled HIV infection presenting with a chronic infiltrated vegetative scrotal ulcer showing progressive enlargement, exophytic growth, and hemorrhagic ulceration. Despite prolonged antimicrobial therapy with azithromycin and doxycycline, followed by…

- Older people living with HIV: a population with high prevalence and severity of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease ‒ A cross-sectional study. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: MASLD was highly prevalent among older PLWH, with a substantial proportion presenting moderate-to-severe steatosis and significant fibrosis. Metabolic and adiposity-related factors were independently associated with hepatic steatosis, while lipodystrophy and higher ALT levels were associated with greater steatosis severity.

- Hospitalization for tuberculosis in children and adolescents: clinical, epidemiological characteristics and post-treatment sequelae at a referral center in Brazil. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: Despite the high cure rate, a substantial proportion of children and adolescents developed post-tuberculosis sequelae. These findings highlight the need for a comprehensive approach, including post-treatment and multidisciplinary follow-up, centered on children and adolescents, to reduce morbidity and long-term functional impairment across the life course.

- Corticosteroid treatment for post-COVID-19 persistent interstitial lung disease: a randomized clinical trial. [Randomized Controlled Trial]
- This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of prednisolone in the treatment of persistent interstitial lung disease following severe SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia. A single-center, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial was conducted. All participants presented residual pulmonary opacities on high-resolution chest computed tomography 4-months after COVID-19 diagnosis. Patients received…

- Prevalence of G6PD candidate variants in malaria-endemic populations of northern Brazil. [Journal Article]Braz J Infect Dis. 2026; 30(4):105893.BJ
- Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase Deficiency (G6PDd) is the most prevalent enzymopathy worldwide and is particularly frequent in malaria-endemic regions. In Brazil, the distribution of G6PD variants is heterogeneous, with predominance of the African A- variant, although regional diversity remains incompletely characterized. This study aimed to genotype seven G6PD variants previously reported in B…

- Predictors of mortality in hospitalized patients with disseminated histoplasmosis. [Journal Article]Braz J Infect Dis. 2026 Jul-Aug; 30(4):105891.BJ
- CONCLUSIONS: Tachypnea at admission was the only independent predictor of in-hospital mortality. Dysphagia may promote earlier healthcare-seeking behavior, potentially contributing to lower mortality. These findings represent noninvasive and low-cost measures that may be useful for early risk stratification and resource optimization in resource-limited endemic settings.

- Microbiome analysis of Cystic Fibrosis sputum presents higher sensitivity than the conventional bacterial culture. [Journal Article]Braz J Infect Dis. 2026; 30(4):105876.BJ
- CONCLUSIONS: The use of NSG resources has become an important tool to improve the knowledge of the microbial profile of a CF patient. Our findings contribute to a better understanding of that the evaluation of the airway microbiome of CF patients plays an important role to better understand the pulmonary microbiota and to anticipate the detection of common CF pathogens.
