- Unusual coexistence of vascular compression syndromes: Nutcracker, Dunbar, and May-Thurner syndromes. [Case Reports]Cardiovasc J Afr. 2026 Oct 16; 37(4):454-457.CJ
- Vascular compression syndromes represent a group of rare conditions caused by extrinsic compression of veins or arteries by surrounding anatomical structures. These disorders are often underdiagnosed due to nonspecific symptoms, and the coexistence of multiple syndromes in a single patient is extremely rare. We report an 18-year-old woman with no past medical history who presented with intermitte…

- Expanding interventional cardiology in sub-Saharan Africa: Progress, barriers, and a path forward. [Review]Cardiovasc J Afr. 2026 Oct 02; 37(4):416-419.CJ
- Cardiovascular disease is an increasingly significant cause of morbidity and mortality in sub-Saharan Africa, driven by demographic growth, population ageing, and epidemiological transition. Despite the growing burden of ischaemic heart disease and other cardiovascular conditions, access to interventional cardiology services remains severely limited across the region. Critical shortages of percut…

- Safety and patient comfort after coronary artery bypass surgery: Conventional versus single-drain - a retrospective cohort study. [Journal Article]Cardiovasc J Afr. 2026 Oct 16; 37(4):448-453.CJ
- CONCLUSIONS: On-pump CABG performed without pleural drain placement appears to be safe and does not increase postoperative complications, while significantly reducing analgesic requirements and improving patient comfort.

- Conservative management of subdiaphragmatic aortic trauma. [Case Reports]Cardiovasc J Afr. 2026 Oct 02; 37(4):412-415.CJ
- Traumatic rupture of the thoracic aorta is most frequently caused by rapid deceleration during road traffic accidents, with the aortic isthmus representing the most common site of injury. Isolated post-traumatic distal aortic haematomas remain rare. Their clinical management is highly challenging, particularly when the regional aortic diameter is narrow. We report the case of a 26-year-old man wh…

- Infective endocarditis in children: a 23-year experience at a Southern African tertiary institution. [Journal Article]Cardiovasc J Afr. 2026 Oct 16; 37(4):430-441.CJ
- CONCLUSIONS: CHD is the most common association with IE, followed by structurally normal hearts in premature infants and patients with CVC. The complication rate of 56% and 24% mortality rate highlight the devastating outcomes of IE.

- Admission neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio and target-vessel failure after bifurcation percutaneous coronary intervention in acute coronary syndrome. [Journal Article]Cardiovasc J Afr. 2026 Sep 11; 37(3):407-413.CJ
- CONCLUSIONS: In ACS patients undergoing bifurcation PCI, increased inflammatory burden reflected by NLR and greater coronary complexity are independently associated with TVF, supporting the use of combined inflammatory and angiographic risk assessment after PCI.

- Mini-crush versus provisional stenting in coronary bifurcation lesions: long-term results from a real-world cohort. [Journal Article]Cardiovasc J Afr. 2026 Sep 11; 37(3):396-403.CJ
- CONCLUSIONS: In our real-world cohort, both mini-crush and provisional stenting strategies were associated with similar long-term clinical outcomes. After adjusting for patient and lesion complexity, the stenting technique did not predict long-term prognosis, suggesting that anatomical and clinical factors may outweigh procedural strategy in bifurcation PCI.

- Neurological and neurocognitive outcomes of routine deep hypothermic circulatory arrest with open distal anastomosis in ascending aortic and aortic root aneurysm surgery. [Journal Article]Cardiovasc J Afr. 2026 Sep 11; 37(3):325-331.CJ
- This study aimed to evaluate postoperative neurological and neurocognitive changes in patients undergoing ascending aortic and aortic root aneurysm surgery using the deep hypothermic circulatory arrest technique with open distal anastomosis performed without cerebral perfusion. Thirty-six patients (83.3% male, n = 30; 16.7% female, n = 6) were included. Demographic, operative, and postoperative d…

- CONCLUSIONS: NT-proBNP levels differ significantly among hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and may reflect distinct pathophysiological mechanisms and cardiovascular adaptation patterns.

- Complex cardiac and porcelain aorta surgery in patients with untreated familial hypercholesterolaemia: a case report. [Case Reports]Cardiovasc J Afr. 2026 Sep 11; 37(3):381-385.CJ
- Familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH) is a genetic disorder characterised by elevated levels of circulating low-density lipoprotein cholesterol. Serious presentations are challenging to treat. We report a case of complex cardiovascular outcomes in a 28-year-old man with diabetes mellitus and untreated FH. The diagnostic workup was compatible with a homozygous phenotype. The patient presented with a…

- Association of preoperative systemic immune-inflammation index and atherogenic index of plasma with early postoperative clinical outcomes in patients undergoing isolated elective coronary artery bypass grafting with cardiopulmonary bypass. [Journal Article]Cardiovasc J Afr. 2026 Sep 11; 37(3):386-392.CJ
- CONCLUSIONS: Higher preoperative SII values were associated with less favourable early postoperative parameters, including postoperative lactate and creatinine levels, mechanical ventilation duration, and ICU LOS, in this small retrospective cohort. AIP was associated mainly with postoperative lactate and creatinine levels. These findings suggest that SII and AIP may serve as practical adjunctive markers reflecting preoperative inflammatory and atherogenic burden; however, independent predictive value cannot be inferred from these data and should be validated in larger, multicentre studies with adjusted models.

- CONCLUSIONS: CT-FFR provides good diagnostic performance for detecting haemodynamically significant CAD in TAVI candidates. Integration into routine workflows may reduce purely diagnostic invasive procedures while maintaining accuracy. Larger prospective studies are needed to validate these findings.

- Is routine chest X-ray necessary after ultrasound-guided TIVAP insertion through the internal jugular vein? [Journal Article]Cardiovasc J Afr. 2026 Aug 28; 37(3):358-364.CJ
- CONCLUSIONS: Routine post-procedural chest X-ray identified catheter tip malpositioning in a subset of patients; however, these findings did not alter clinical management in the absence of port dysfunction. Selective imaging in patients with failed port functionality may safely reduce unnecessary radiation exposure and healthcare costs without compromising outcomes.

- Awake off-pump no-touch aorta coronary artery bypass grafting in a patient with interstitial lung disease during the COVID-19 pandemic. [Case Reports]Cardiovasc J Afr. 2026 Aug 21; 37(3):354-357.CJ
- CONCLUSIONS: Awake OPCABG under TEA is a viable strategy for elderly patients with severe interstitial lung disease who face substantial risks from general anaesthesia and cardiopulmonary bypass. This complex approach should be restricted to referral centres with extensive experience in advanced off-pump surgery and thoracic epidural anaesthesia techniques.
