  • Diagnostic Performance of the Neutrophil-to-Lymphocyte Ratio for the Identification of Insulin Resistance in Patients with Fibrotic Chronic Hepatitis C: a Case-Control Study. [Journal Article]
Cell Physiol Biochem. 2026 Sep 30; 60(5):592-610.Alnaqqash YR, Amshawee AM, … Ayadi FMCP
  • CONCLUSIONS: In this cohort, NLR was strongly and independently associated with insulin resistance and discriminated insulin-resistant from non-insulin-resistant patients with fibrotic chronic hepatitis C with high accuracy. Because the groups were completely separated on NLR and the threshold was derived in the same sample, the cut-off of 2.24 is an exploratory, cohort-derived threshold rather than an established clinical cut-off, and the accuracy estimates are optimistic and require independent external validation. As all patients had fibrosis and no fibrosis staging was available, the present data support a diagnostic association with the presence of disease rather than prediction of fibrosis severity.
  • Association of DNMT3A Polymorphism, Oxidative Stress, and Global DNA Methylation in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Patients. [Journal Article]
Cell Physiol Biochem. 2026 Sep 11; 60(5):543-559.Allami AM, Al-Musawi HS, … Hasan AFCP
  • CONCLUSIONS: T2DM was associated with altered oxidative stress parameters and increased global DNA methylation. The findings further indicate a potential association between DNMT3A rs11683424 and T2DM susceptibility, whereas rs1550117 was not significantly associated with disease status. However, the data do not establish a direct relationship between the investigated DNMT3A variants, oxidative stress, and global DNA methylation. These findings warrant validation in larger, multi-ethnic cohorts.
  • Molecular Characterization of OXA Carbapenemase Genes in Acinetobacter Baumannii Isolated from Different Clinical Samples. [Journal Article]
Cell Physiol Biochem. 2026 Aug 20; 60(4):445-457.Abdulhassan AA, Hamid HH, … Saber ZMCP
  • CONCLUSIONS: The findings indicate that blaOXA-23 is the predominant contributor to carbapenem resistance among A. baumannii isolates in Baghdad, while blaOXA-24 and blaOXA-58 are also increasingly prevalent. The observed resistance patterns and phylogenetic relationships underscore the importance of continuous molecular surveillance, antimicrobial stewardship, and effective infection control measures to limit the spread of multidrug-resistant A. baumannii. These data contribute valuable regional information to the global understanding of antimicrobial resistance epidemiology.
  • Genotype-Phenotype Correlation of Β-Globin Mutations and Hematological Parameters in Iraqi Β-Thalassemia Patients. [Journal Article]
Cell Physiol Biochem. 2026 Jul 31; 60(4):408-416.Jasim HA, Mohammed HA, Al-Omairi RCP
  • CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated considerable phenotypic heterogeneity among Iraqi patients with β-thalassemia and identified IVS-I-6 as the predominant β-globin mutation in this cohort. The absence of significant genotype-phenotype associations for most clinical variables suggests that additional genetic and environmental modifiers may contribute to disease expression. Combined molecular and hematological evaluation may improve the diagnostic characterization and classification of patients with β-thalassemia.
  • Macrophage Migration Inhibitory Factor (MIF) as a Central Regulator of Tumor Progression and Immune Evasion. [Review]
    Cell Physiol Biochem. 2026 Jul 31; 60(4):386-407.Aliyarbayova A, Shakaraliyeva Y, … Ganbayeva SCP
  • Macrophage migration inhibitory factor has emerged as a central regulator of tumor progression and immune evasion. Initially identified as an inflammatory cytokine, it is now understood as a multifunctional signaling molecule that integrates hypoxia, metabolic stress, oncogenic activation, and tumor microenvironmental remodeling across diverse malignancies. Through pathways involving cluster of d…
