- Hydrological and anthropogenic associations with fecal contamination in coastal pore and surface waters: a one-year FIB and MST study of the Brazoria County, Texas coast. [Journal Article]Mar Environ Res. 2026 Oct 13; 222:108468. [Online ahead of print]ME
- Coastal recreational waters face increasing fecal contamination from poorly defined sources, yet most monitoring relies on fecal indicator bacteria (FIB) that cannot identify pollution origins. This study evaluated microbial water quality at 12 sites (six pore water, six surface water) along the Brazoria County, Texas coastline from July 2024 to June 2025, combining culturable enterococci with a …

- Airflows redefine the cost of aerial transport in the wild. [Journal Article]
- Fuel economy matters to both animals and machines, as the cost of transport can determine where, when, and how far locomotion is possible. However, established estimates of these values for animal flight come from laboratories and treat the atmosphere as constant, even though free-flying animals routinely extract energy from atmospheric flows. Using high-resolution movement data, we estimate the …

- Loss of Fmr1 causes subnucleus-specific decreases in dendritic complexity in mediodorsal thalamus. [Journal Article]
- In the mediodorsal thalamus (MD), neurons of the medial (MD-M) and lateral (MD-L) subnuclei project to the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) to control complementary aspects of behavior, with MD-M supporting more of the social/emotional domain and MD-L promoting cognitive functions. Our recent work shows that MD-M and MD-L have differences in hyperpolarization-activated, cyclic nucleotide-gated (HC…

- One-year outcomes for patients undergoing antegrade continence enema procedures without prior rectal enema therapy: a Pediatric Colorectal and Pelvic Learning Consortium study. [Journal Article]J Pediatr Surg. 2026 Oct 08; :163528. [Online ahead of print]JP
- CONCLUSIONS: Upfront ACE was associated with low complication rates and successful bowel management at one year, with 90.0% continuing ACE flushes and no discontinuations attributable to failure of bowel management. These outcomes were achieved within established multidisciplinary colorectal programs and may not be reproducible in settings without comparable longitudinal support. Further investigation is needed to assess long-term success and compliance and to identify populations who would benefit most from this approach.

- A 7-eV bandgap semiconductor based on silicon-doped α-(AlxGa1-x)2O3. [Journal Article]
- In rectifying power electronics, wider-bandgap (Eg) semiconductors allow higher efficiency and power density with the Baliga figure of merit proportional to Eg[5.5] (refs. [1,2]). Unfortunately, the unique ability of semiconductors to have their conductivities controllably modulated over orders of magnitude by equilibrium doping methods becomes increasingly elusive as the bandgap increases. Incre…

- GeoBoreNet: RGB-Geometry Fusion for Cross-Scene Borehole Detection. [Journal Article]
- Borehole detection in textured quarry reconstructions is challenging because shadows, rocks, and fractured ground can resemble visible surface openings. We introduce GeoBoreNet, which augments RGB with four pixel-aligned inputs derived from reconstructed surface height: local residual relief, spatial gradient magnitude, spatial Laplacian response, and mesh support. Plane removal and resolution-ad…

- Global patterns in plant-pollinator specialization. [Journal Article]
- Pollination is a key ecological process sustaining biodiversity and food security, yet global patterns of plant-pollinator specialization remain unresolved. Using a global dataset of quantitative plant-pollinator networks (>3,400 networks, >110,000 interactions), we show that specialization is latitudinally structured, but not as a single directional pattern. We find no consistent monotonic incre…

- IntroductionAdolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer survivors (ages 15-39 at diagnosis) who identify as sexual and gender minorities [SGM] and/or Black, Indigenous, and Persons of Color [BIPOC]) experience survivorship challenges compounded by discrimination, mistrust, and culturally incongruent care. These factors contribute to inequities in health outcomes and research participation. This quali…

- Neuroradiologic Findings in Patients With SCN2A Disease: A Systematic Review and Retrospective Multicenter Cohort Study. [Systematic Review]Neurology. 2026 Oct 13; 107(7):e218541.Neur
- CONCLUSIONS: This comprehensive characterization of brain MRI abnormalities in SCN2A disease revealed distinct imaging patterns across phenotypic subgroups. Atrophy was typically absent at seizure onset, highlighting progressive disease impact over time. These findings highlight the importance of early seizure control, guide counselling of patients and families, and inform MRI interpretation and biomarker research for future clinical trials. The retrospective design and heterogeneous imaging data represent important limitations.

- Theta synchronization coordinates ventral temporal and medial temporal coding of human face familiarity. [Journal Article]
- Recognizing familiar faces is a fundamental social function that depends on interactions between perceptual and memory systems, yet the underlying neural mechanisms remain poorly understood. Here, we combine single-neuron recordings, intracranial electroencephalography (iEEG), and multi-scale connectivity analyses in the human ventral temporal cortex (VTC) and medial temporal lobe (MTL) to invest…

- Using Automated Coding of Nonverbal Behavior During a Suicide Assessment to Inform Risk Detection: Mixed Cross-Sectional and Exploratory Prospective Study. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates the importance of attending to nonverbal channels of communication in suicide assessments, especially those of the clinical interviewer. It also highlights the potential for automated coding to detect clinically meaningful information efficiently and objectively.

- Postnatal refinement of CaV channel isoform composition, electrical activity, and insulin release in mouse pancreatic β-cells. [Journal Article]
- Pancreatic β-cell mass and glucose-stimulated insulin secretion strongly increase during postnatal development. Voltage-gated calcium channels (CaV) are the key determinants of pancreatic β-cell electrical activity, insulin granule exocytosis, β-cell proliferation and survival. Here we show that β-cells of 1-day-old mice have significantly smaller CaV currents compared to 14-day (juvenile) or 3-m…

- Functional evidence of Hv1-mediated proton flux in cardiac mitochondria. [Journal Article]
- Mitochondria are essential for cardiac myocyte function, providing the continuous ATP supply required for contraction and cellular homeostasis. Regulation of the proton motive force, which is critical for ATP synthesis, depends on multiple ion transport mechanisms, including those mediating H[+] flux. The voltage-gated proton channel (Hv1), encoded by the Hvcn1 gene, is known to regulate cytosoli…

- Protein sorting and proteostasis mechanisms in CFTR-related exocrine pancreas dysfunction: A systematic narrative review. [Systematic Review]
- The pancreas consists of exocrine and endocrine compartments. In the exocrine pancreas, cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) functions mainly in ductal epithelial cells as a chloride and bicarbonate channel. Its activity depends on proper protein folding, trafficking, and localization to the apical membrane. This systematic narrative review aims to synthesize the available e…

- The influence of precipitation and vessel traffic on the distribution of fecal indicator bacteria and qPCR source tracking markers across coastal groundwater and surface water in Brazoria County, Texas. [Journal Article]J Appl Microbiol. 2026 Sep 02; 137(9).JA
- CONCLUSIONS: Fecal contamination was strongly structured by hydrological compartment, environmental conditions, and proximity to anthropogenic activity. The combined use of culture-based Enterococcus FIB and qPCR MST markers enhances both quantification and source identification across interconnected water systems.
