  • Biogenic amines as neuroendocrine tumor markers: limitations and future perspectives. [Review]
Clin Chem Lab Med. 2026 Oct 19. [Online ahead of print]Mellova M, Vicha A, … Klapkova ECC
  • Biogenic amines and their metabolites are central biochemical markers in the diagnosis and management of catecholamine-producing neuroendocrine tumors, including pheochromocytoma, paraganglioma, and neuroblastoma. Despite decades of clinical use, their wider implementation remains limited by substantial physiological variability, pre-analytical influences, and methodological heterogeneity across …
  • Value-based hemostasis diagnostics: from laboratory information to clinical value. [Journal Article]
Clin Chem Lab Med. 2026 Oct 19. [Online ahead of print]Coluccio V, Cordella S, … Marietta MCC
  • In hemostasis diagnostics, increasing analytical performance and test availability do not automatically translate into improved clinical outcomes. We propose value-based hemostasis diagnostics (VBHD) as a structured framework that links laboratory testing directly with patient-centered value and optimized resource utilization.
  • An age-stratified semiquantitative urine ACR triage strategy for quantitative confirmation: a retrospective diagnostic accuracy study with temporal validation. [Journal Article]
Clin Chem Lab Med. 2026 Oct 14. [Online ahead of print]Núñez Pérez M, Mondéjar R, … Viloria Peñas MDMCC
  • CONCLUSIONS: In this retrospective simulation, an age-stratified reflex-testing strategy provided a balance between reducing quantitative ACR measurements and limiting the residual probability of ACR ≥30 mg/g creatinine following a negative semiquantitative result. The strategy used more sensitive thresholds in older patients, in whom albuminuria prevalence was higher, while allowing a greater reduction in quantitative testing in younger groups. These findings were reproducible in a temporal internal validation cohort but require external and local validation before implementation in other laboratories.
  • A preanalytical quality indicator framework for automated extracellular vesicle separation. [Journal Article]
Clin Chem Lab Med. 2026 Oct 13. [Online ahead of print]Zimbo AM, Crapella V, … Iaccino ECC
  • CONCLUSIONS: This proof-of-concept framework establishes analytical prerequisites. No single platform optimizes all parameters; selection should be driven by intended application: EXODUS for sensitivity-limited discovery, Summit for analytical standardization, manual SEC for morphological reference. Validation in disease cohorts is required before clinical implementation.
  • Low PaO2 with normal saturation: beyond leukocyte-mediated hypoxemia. [Journal Article]
Clin Chem Lab Med. 2026 Oct 12. [Online ahead of print]Zavorsky GS, Labrador KACC
  • CONCLUSIONS: Apparent spurious hypoxemia was more often explained by temperature reporting and fetal hemoglobin than oxygen metabolism by leukocytes; the leukocytosis signal could not be separated from neonatal physiology. Laboratories should identify the PaO2 reporting temperature, and clinicians should consider fetal-hemoglobin physiology before invoking leukocyte-mediated hypoxemia in neonates.
  • When patient change and interpretive applicability diverge: a two-axis framework for laboratory medicine. [Journal Article]
Clin Chem Lab Med. 2026 Oct 09. [Online ahead of print]Dabour Z, Dabour KCC
  • Personalised laboratory medicine has advanced through reference change values, personalised reference intervals and decision limits, multivariate reference models, and indication-aware interpretation. Yet these developments do not resolve a distinct problem: evidence of within-person change and evidence supporting the applicability of an interpretive system answer different clinical questions and…
  • Towards a suitable biomarker for childhood screening for familial hypercholesterolemia: a systematic literature review. [Review]
Clin Chem Lab Med. 2026 Oct 09. [Online ahead of print]de Kleijne VH, Hutten BA, … Albersen MCC
  • Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is a common genetic disorder causing elevated low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c) concentrations from birth, resulting in a high risk of premature cardiovascular disease. Despite effective early treatment, FH remains underdiagnosed in children, highlighting the need for universal screening. This systematic review aims to evaluate the available evidence r…
