- Back to Basaloid: Revisiting the Diagnostic Dilemma of Basaloid Squamous Carcinoma Versus Small Cell Carcinoma on Lung Fine Needle Aspiration Biopsy Cytology. [Journal Article]Diagn Cytopathol. 2026 Oct 31. [Online ahead of print]DC
- CONCLUSIONS: Although no single feature is pathognomonic, a combination of architectural findings is useful in distinguishing BSCC from SCLC. The presence of cohesive tissue fragments with sharp edges and peripheral palisading strongly favors a diagnosis of BSCC.

- Morphological Characteristics and Diagnostic Challenges of Primary Thyroid Lymphoma in Fine-Needle Aspiration Cytology. [Journal Article]Diagn Cytopathol. 2026 Oct 31. [Online ahead of print]DC
- CONCLUSIONS: PTL is a rare condition mainly affecting elderly women and usually of B-cell origin. Accurate cytological diagnosis of aggressive B-cell lymphoma is crucial to avoid unnecessary surgeries. While ancillary studies aid in distinguishing Hashimoto's thyroiditis from MALT lymphoma, diagnosis remains challenging due to the limited cellularity of FNA samples.

- CONCLUSIONS: This project highlights limitations of CSF cytology alone in diagnosing LC and demonstrates that adjunctive IHC testing improves diagnostic accuracy. Incorporation of IHC into routine evaluation of equivocal cases should be considered.

- Cytological Findings and Diagnostic Pitfalls of a Rare Tumor Arising From a Rare Site: "The Story of Chondromyxoid Fibroma of Great Toe". [Journal Article]Diagn Cytopathol. 2026 Oct 20. [Online ahead of print]DC
- Chondromyxoid fibroma (CMF) is a rare, benign cartilaginous tumor composed of myxoid and fibrous components, accounting for approximately 1% of all bone tumors. It typically arises in the metaphysis of long bones, with epiphyseal involvement of the short tubular bones of the hand and foot being uncommon. We report the case of a 14-year-old girl who presented with pain and a gradually progressive …

- CONCLUSIONS: IAC-YS showed a higher proportion of cases of Category 1 and a lower proportion of cases of Category 3 than the CJS. Despite these differences, both systems were equivalent in their impact on daily medical care, although ROM differed for the content of Categories 1 and 3. Quality assurance parameters for our data based on IAC-YS are comparable to those of CJS.

- FNA of Striated Duct Adenoma: Cytologic, Histologic, and Molecular Features of a Rare Salivary Gland Neoplasm. [Journal Article]Diagn Cytopathol. 2026 Oct 20. [Online ahead of print]DC
- Striated duct adenoma (SDA) is a rare benign salivary gland neoplasm with limited cytologic characterization. We report a case of SDA with cytologic, histologic, immunohistochemical, and molecular correlation to further define its morphologic spectrum and diagnostic considerations. The patient was a 62-year-old male with a submandibular gland mass. Cytologically, the specimen demonstrated loose c…

- Recognizing Fluid Overload-Associated Large B-Cell Lymphoma on Effusion Cytology: Two Illustrative Cases. [Journal Article]Diagn Cytopathol. 2026 Oct 18. [Online ahead of print]DC
- Fluid overload-associated large B-cell lymphoma (FO-LBCL) is a distinct entity introduced in the 5th edition of the WHO Classification of Hematolymphoid Tumors (2022). It denotes a large B-cell lymphoma confined to one or more serous cavities as effusions, without a solid or nodal mass, in the absence of KSHV/HHV8 (and largely EBV) infection, arising in patients with fluid-overload states. It was…

- Two Cases of Myeloid Sarcoma at Rare Sites: Cytological Manifestations and Diagnostic Experience. [Journal Article]Diagn Cytopathol. 2026 Oct 14. [Online ahead of print]DC
- Myeloid sarcoma is a rare extramedullary manifestation of acute myeloid leukemia, and primary involvement of the gastrointestinal tract and uterine cervix is particularly uncommon. Due to its low incidence and nonspecific clinical manifestations, the rates of clinical misdiagnosis and missed diagnosis remain high. Herein, we report two cases of myeloid sarcoma arising at rare sites. Case 1 was a …

- High Concordance of p53 Immunohistochemistry Between Cytology and Surgical Specimens Supports Early Classification of Gynecologic Malignancies and Borderline Tumors. [Journal Article]Diagn Cytopathol. 2026 Oct 06. [Online ahead of print]DC
- CONCLUSIONS: p53 immunohistochemistry demonstrates highly reproducible, pattern-based interpretation in cytology specimens, supporting its use as a reliable surrogate for TP53 status at the time of initial diagnosis. These findings reinforce the role of p53 in enabling early and accurate classification of gynecologic malignancies when surgical material is limited or unavailable.

- Impact of Cytologist-Performed Rapid on-Site Evaluation on Adequacy and Diagnostic Performance in Thyroid Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology. [Journal Article]Diagn Cytopathol. 2026 Sep 29. [Online ahead of print]DC
- CONCLUSIONS: Cytologist-performed ROSE was associated with significantly improved specimen adequacy, a marked reduction in nondiagnostic thyroid aspirates, fewer needle passes and prepared slides, and a lower repeat cytology rate. These findings suggest that a structured cytologist-performed ROSE model may be a feasible and effective approach for improving specimen adequacy in thyroid FNAB, particularly in high-volume centers with limited cytopathology resources.

- A Rare Case of Poorly Differentiated Synovial Sarcoma of the Superficial Neck: Diagnostic Approach in a Fine-Needle Aspiration Specimen. [Journal Article]Diagn Cytopathol. 2026 Sep 29. [Online ahead of print]DC
- Synovial sarcoma (SS) is a rare and aggressive soft tissue malignancy that is more common in the extremities and has an unusual occurrence in the head and neck region. SS has two main subtypes: biphasic and monophasic. Some rare subtypes include poorly differentiated (round cell), monophasic epithelial, calcifying/ossifying, and myxoid types. Here, we present a rare case of a 61-year-old male wit…

- Metastasis of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) to the head and neck region is rare, accounting for approximately 8%-14% of all RCC metastases. The thyroid gland is the most common site of metastasis in this region. However, RCC is known for its ability to metastasize to unusual anatomical sites, including the salivary glands. Approximately 0.1% of metastatic salivary gland neoplasms originate from rena…
