  • Exploring the impact of controlled substance restrictions on epilepsy care in the United States: A neurologist survey. [Journal Article]
Epilepsy Behav. 2026 Aug 09; 184:111229. [Online ahead of print]de Leon Ernst L, Simon A, … Spencer DCEB
  • CONCLUSIONS: Respondents reported high rates of medication access issues related to controlled substance restrictions and low rates of ASM misuse. Controlled substance restrictions create practical barriers to reliably obtaining scheduled ASM prescriptions that can result in increased risk of morbidity and mortality. Controlled substance restrictions warrant reevaluation for PWE given the specific risk-benefit tradeoffs for this life-threatening neurologic condition.
  • What works and what needs to change: Women's perspectives on pregnancy-related epilepsy care and service improvements in the United Kingdom. [Journal Article]
    Epilepsy Behav. 2026 Aug 04; 184:111245. [Online ahead of print]Chatterjee A, Denny E, … Weckesser AEB
  • CONCLUSIONS: Despite longstanding guidelines, women with epilepsy continue to experience significant gaps between recommended standards of pregnancy care and service realities. Women describe deficits in early, proactive discussions about medication and risks, informed decision-making, and joined-up care, leaving some to perform unsupported "safety work", correcting errors and mediating between neurology, obstetric and midwifery teams. Improving care requires a commitment to holistic, person-centred support that embeds clear, respectful, two-way communication with women and across services as a core safety practice.
  • Epilepsy related mortality: more than sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP). [Journal Article]
Epilepsy Behav. 2026 Aug 08; 184:111207. [Online ahead of print]Langan Y, Lynn EEB
  • CONCLUSIONS: This is the first study of non SUDEP epilepsy related deaths in Ireland. It is important that these deaths, which like SUDEP may be potentially preventable, are recognised that and that risk reduction strategies are put in place. While this work demonstrates that the interrogation of coronial records is a useful way to monitor epilepsy mortality, efforts should be made to ensure more accurate certification of these deaths.
  • Time over drug in pediatric status epilepticus: A prospective observational study. [Journal Article]
Epilepsy Behav. 2026 Aug 08; 184:111234. [Online ahead of print]Halim MN, Aly Hussein RH, … Osama Shatta MEB
  • Convulsive status epilepticus (CSE) is a time-sensitive neurological emergency in which delayed treatment may contribute to pharmacoresistance and poor outcomes. Evidence comparing third-line antiseizure medications in children remains limited. Objective To compare intravenous lacosamide and phenytoin in pediatric refractory CSE and to determine whether treatment timing predicts seizure cessation…
