- Changes in Molecular Signature on the Ocular Surface in Response to Optimising Therapy in Aqueous-Deficient Dry Eye Disease. [Journal Article]Exp Eye Res. 2026 Sep 28; :111255. [Online ahead of print]EE
- CONCLUSIONS: Optimisation of therapy including CsA 0.1% CE resulted in significant improvements in objective and subjective clinical parameters, however, minimally impacted epigenetic markers. Despite this, microRNA were detectable at elevated levels, suggesting limited epigenetic impact of current therapy. The persistent dysregulation of microRNA targeting the TGF-β/SMAD2 pathway and CDH11 provides a molecular rationale and direct for future research and therapeutic innovations aimed at achieving more comprehensive disease control in patients with immune-mediated ADDED.

- Identification of αSMA lineage cells in the posterior limbal stroma. [Journal Article]Exp Eye Res. 2026 Sep 26; :111259. [Online ahead of print]EE
- Limbal stromal cells constitute a heterogeneous cellular compartment that supports tissue homeostasis and may contribute to regional progenitor niches within the corneoscleral limbus. Although stromal cells have been described in both anterior and posterior limbal regions, their in vivo distribution and relationship to α-smooth muscle actin (αSMA) lineage activity remain poorly understood. This s…

- Effects of Body Weight on Ocular Fundus Blood Vessels in C57 Mice at Different Developmental and Disease Stages. [Journal Article]Exp Eye Res. 2026 Sep 25; :111248. [Online ahead of print]EE
- Body weight is a potential modulator of vascular homeostasis. However, its effects on the development and pathological progression of fundus blood vessels in C57 mice remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the impact of body weight on fundus vascular development and pathological processes. Wild-type C57 mice were selected, with the three lightest and three heaviest mice from each litter …

- Comparative Analysis of Retinal and Choroidal Vascular Parameters in Healthy Rhesus Monkeys of Different Age Groups. [Journal Article]Exp Eye Res. 2026 Sep 24; :111246. [Online ahead of print]EE
- CONCLUSIONS: Superficial VD peaks at 3-6 mm, while deep, inner, and choroidal VD all reach their maximum at 1-3 mm. These values typically peak during adolescence and gradually decline with age.

- Role of Integrin β1 subunit Loss in Conjunctivochalasis: A Mechanistic Study of MMP-Mediated Extracellular Matrix Degradation and Fibroblast Dysfunction. [Journal Article]Exp Eye Res. 2026 Sep 24; :111254. [Online ahead of print]EE
- This study investigated the role of Integrin β1 subunit in conjunctivochalasis (CCH) using clinical specimens, shRNA-mediated in vitro models, and an MMP-3-induced in vivo rabbit model. Clinical and rabbit CCH tissues exhibited severe stromal edema along with collagen and elastic fiber degradation. In CCH-derived human conjunctival fibroblasts, Integrin β1 subunit and Collagen I were significantl…

- PAX6ΔPD modulates the balance between proliferation and differentiation programs in corneal epithelial cells through protein-protein interactions. [Journal Article]Exp Eye Res. 2026 Sep 24; 273:111244. [Online ahead of print]EE
- PAX6 is a key regulator of corneal epithelial differentiation, expressed as multiple variants that result either from alternative splicing or by the use of an alternative internal promoter. These variants include the canonical PAX6, PAX6(5a), and the paired-less PAX6ΔPD variant. This study evaluated the functional roles of these variants in rabbit RCE1(5T5) corneal epithelial cells. Endogenous PA…

- Inhibition of STING Protects the Neuroretina in an Ndufs4 Knockout Mouse Model of Mitochondrial Complex 1 Deficiency. [Journal Article]Exp Eye Res. 2026 Sep 23; :111238. [Online ahead of print]EE
- CONCLUSIONS: STING inhibition preserves neuroretina structure and function, highlighting its role in Ndufs4 pathology. This is the first study to show improved ERG responses following treatment in Ndufs4-KO mice, supporting STING as a promising therapeutic target for mitochondrial NADH dehydrogenase deficiency disorders.

- NAD[+]-sirtuin-mitochondrial quality control in lens epithelial cells: a candidate modulatory network in crystalline lens aging. [Review]Exp Eye Res. 2026 Sep 20; 272:111242. [Online ahead of print]EE
- Crystalline lens aging reflects parallel processes: intrinsic chemical modification of exceptionally long-lived fiber-cell proteins, deterioration of lens-wide redox and transport homeostasis, and declining maintenance in metabolically active cellular compartments. Lens epithelial cells (LECs) support antioxidant defense, ion and water balance, stress responses, and the quality of newly formed fi…

- CONCLUSIONS: FBXL19-AS1 regulates the proliferation, migration, and apoptosis of HRECs by sponging miR-200c-3p, thereby participating in the microvascular lesion process of PDR. This provides a new perspective for understanding the pathogenesis of PDR.

- Classical accounts of retinal aging emphasize oxidative, mitochondrial, inflammatory, vascular, proteostatic, and retinal pigment epithelium (RPE)-centered mechanisms. Omics studies now confirm and refine this non-uniformity, showing that aging-associated signals vary by cell type, anatomical niche, molecular layer, and functional reserve. Direct evidence from single-cell and single-nucleus trans…

- This study aims to investigate the protective effects of trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO), a natural occurring chaperone, on delaying diabetic cataract (DC) progression. Rats were divided into 4 experimental groups: untreated controls, TMAO treatment only, streptozotocin-induced diabetic mellitus (DM), and DM with TMAO therapy. After 10 weeks, aqueous humor TMAO levels and lens opacity were assessed…

- Tricaine methanesulfonate (MS-222) is a commonly used amphibian and fish anesthetic that blocks voltage-gated sodium channels. There are documented deleterious effects of MS-222 on visual response properties in newts, frogs and humans. Yet, the impact of MS-222 on the amplitudes and kinetics of visual responses in the zebrafish (Danio rerio) retina remains unresolved. Here, we use ex vivo electro…

- The lamina cribrosa (LC) and peripapillary sclera (PPS) form a biomechanical structure whose response to intraocular pressure (IOP) is central to glaucomatous optic nerve damage. Computational models predict strong biomechanical interactions between PPS and LC, yet experimental validation in human eyes has remained limited, particularly for full-thickness characterization. In this study, we appli…
