- Vulnerability Intersections: An Integrative Conceptual Framework for Understanding Vulnerability in AI-Assisted Care for Older Adults. [Journal Article]Gerontologist. 2026 Oct 07. [Online ahead of print]G
- Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications are increasingly used to support independent living and care for older adults, particularly those in vulnerable situations. Yet, how vulnerability is constructed when AI enters later-life care remains poorly theorized. Existing approaches to vulnerability in old age inadequately address AI-related risks, structural conditions, exposure pathways, and life …

- Being Sensed, Scored, and 'Connected': A Social-Gerontological Critique of AI-Driven Loneliness Detection for Older Adults in Taiwan. [Journal Article]Gerontologist. 2026 Oct 07. [Online ahead of print]G
- Enthusiasm for artificial intelligence (AI) that continuously infers emotion promises to change how care systems identify older adults at risk of loneliness. We use AI-driven loneliness detection to mean systems that infer loneliness, or a proxy for it, from sensed data rather than from a person's answer, rendering the inference as a score or category used in care; they range from facial and voca…

- Exploring Experiences of Disempowerment in Older Adults with Chronic Illness: A Qualitative Study. [Journal Article]Gerontologist. 2026 Oct 05. [Online ahead of print]G
- CONCLUSIONS: This study revealed the experiences and perceptions, causes and consequences of disempowerment in older adults with chronic illness. The tendency to indirectly express or suppress the negative feelings underscores a need for tailored strategies to better assess and address disempowerment in this population.

- Re-Examining Age-Friendly Communities for Older People with Insecure Housing Histories. [Journal Article]Gerontologist. 2026 Oct 05. [Online ahead of print]G
- In many countries, population aging and increasing rates of housing security among older people are unfolding simultaneously. While the World Health Organization's Age-Friendly Cities and Communities (AFCC) framework is largely considered the leading framework for developing age-supportive communities, it does not adequately account for the ways in which a community may be inclusive, supportive, …

- Implementing person-centered dementia care practices using a care community coaching intervention. [Journal Article]Gerontologist. 2026 Sep 10; 66(11).G
- CONCLUSIONS: The Care Community Coaching Program can be effectively implemented in care communities and shows preliminary efficacy in increasing the adoption of the DCPR for PCC. Areas for future research on the impact of this intervention, and implications for improving the person-centeredness of dementia care in care communities, are identified and discussed.

- Range and Consistency of Reported Outcomes in Interventional Studies involving Frail Inpatients: A Systematic Review. [Journal Article]Gerontologist. 2026 Sep 25. [Online ahead of print]G
- CONCLUSIONS: There was heterogeneity and inconsistency in outcomes reported across interventional studies involving frail inpatients. This limits comparability and synthesis of study findings. The development of a core outcome set informed by the priorities of patients and caregivers, alongside healthcare professionals, would enhance the consistency, relevance, and quality of frailty research and better support patient-centred care.

- Understanding the Care Priorities, Service Needs, and Lived Experiences of Rural Older Adults with Dementia and Cognitive Impairment in Canada: A Scoping Review. [Journal Article]Gerontologist. 2026 Sep 25. [Online ahead of print]G
- CONCLUSIONS: The findings revealed critical challenges in navigating rural dementia care, where geographical distance, misinformation, limited services, and dementia-related stigma exacerbate cognitive care disparities. Addressing these challenges requires ingenuity and prioritizing lived experience research to inform community-relevant solutions. Strategic investment and implementation science are needed to co-design, implement, and evaluate navigational support models and interdisciplinary dementia care hubs to improve rural access. Advancing rural dementia care requires moving beyond documenting challenges to evaluating scalable population-level interventions.

- Participatory Approaches with Older Adults in Technology and Innovation Research: A Scoping Review of Reviews. [Journal Article]Gerontologist. 2026 Sep 24. [Online ahead of print]G
- Compared to other age groups, older adults are often marginalized in the design processes of digital technologies leading to digital and social exclusion. While these aspects have been discussed in several reviews, an overarching perspective on how older adults are involved in Participatory Approaches (PA) in technology and innovation development is currently missing. This scoping review of revie…

- This manuscript analyzes the literary, social and cultural representations of dementia in Antjie Krog's Blood's Inner Rhyme (2025) and Julia Martin's The Blackridge House (2019). I contend that the authors' accounts of their mothers' struggle with dementia, from its onset to its end, function as living archives of personal and national history. I employ life writing, aging studies, and, to a less…
