- [Nonimmunological systemic therapies in head and neck cancer : Cytotoxic, targeted, EGFR-directed, and supportive approaches at ASCO 2026]. [Review]HNO. 2026 Oct 15. [Online ahead of print]HNO
- CONCLUSIONS: The nasopharyngeal trials are methodologically the strongest, but noninferiority is not equivalence, and transferability to other head and neck cancers is not established. No purely cytotoxic or targeted therapy has established a new standard in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC); low-cost metronomic regimens and EGFR-directed combinations are promising, supportive approaches remain exploratory.

- [Methodological implications of the minimal clinically important difference in patient-reported outcome measures in the field of cochlear implant provision. German version]. [Journal Article]
- To determine the minimal clinically important difference (MCID), patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) are presented that cover the dimensions 1. subjective hearing ability, 2. hearing-specific quality of life, and 3. generic quality of life, which are largely mentioned in corresponding guidelines and recommendations for device provision and aural rehabilitation in Germany. In the absence of …

- [Preventive approaches in phoniatrics and musicians' medicine-voice physiology and vocal health curriculum content during the training of vocal students]. [Review]
- Professional singers are exposed to high levels of vocal strain, which leads to a high prevalence of voice disorders within this occupational group. As part of appropriate phoniatric and musicians' medicine care, particular attention must be paid to the prevention of voice disorders as early as during the university training stage. In the healthcare sector, prevention has taken on growing importa…

- Implantation of a transcutaneous, bone-anchored, piezoelectric bone conduction hearing aid on the squama temporalis. [Review]
- Bone-anchored hearing implants, such as the Osia® system (Cochlear Deutschland GmbH, Hanover, Germany), are used to rehabilitate conductive hearing loss, mixed hearing loss, and single-sided deafness. The surgical technique presented anchors the OSI300 supraauricularly and subperiosteally over the squama temporalis, thereby avoiding the creation of an implant bed in the mastoid and reducing cosme…

- [Special tumor entities : New results at the 2026 ASCO Annual Meeting]. [Review]HNO. 2026 Sep 30. [Online ahead of print]HNO
- Rare tumor entities in the head and neck region are biologically heterogeneous, frequently only investigated in small cohorts, and therapeutically challenging. The current article critically contextualizes clinically relevant studies presented at the 2026 American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Annual Meeting on salivary gland, thyroid, and nasopharyngeal cancer and cutaneous squamous cell c…

- [Support needs of people with intellectual disabilities after hearing aid provision]. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: There is a high need for support among people with intellectual disabilities after hearing aid fitting, especially with regard to independent use. A support program accompanying hearing aid provision must also target the affected person's significant others.

- [Surgical trials in head and neck cancer at the 2026 ASCO Annual Meeting]. [Review]
- At the 2026 American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Annual Meeting, once again, only a small number of presentations focused primarily on surgery. Nevertheless, surgical questions could be seen to be becoming increasingly important within perioperative multimodal treatment concepts. The most relevant contributions were secondary analyses of the phase III KEYNOTE-689 and NIVOPOSTOP trials. Th…

- The new Mainz Audiometric Test for Children aged 3-7 years (MATCH) in noise : Design, normalization, and validation. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: The MATCH in noise is a reliable and child-appropriate tool for assessing speech reception thresholds as early as preschool age. It addresses a methodological gap in existing procedures, which typically provide valid results only from school age onwards, and enables early and differentiated evaluation of hearing aid outcomes in children with hearing impairment.

- [Comparison of cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas of the face and ear with and without external auditory canal involvement]. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: Patients with cSCC of the auricle or external auditory canal entrance involving the EAM presented with significantly more advanced T and N stages at diagnosis, underscoring the need for more aggressive treatment strategies, including consideration of adjuvant therapy. After adjustment for T and N stage, overall survival was comparable to that of other tumor locations, suggesting that the poorer prognosis associated with EAM involvement is primarily attributable to more advanced disease at presentation rather than to distinct tumor biology.

- [Multiple associations between tinnitus and cognition]. [Review]
- Tinnitus can impair cognitive functions, such as attention, working memory and executive control. Pathophysiologically, this is explained by maladaptive neural plasticity, in which central auditory and nonauditory networks (e.g., prefrontal and limbic structures) become overactive or dysfunctional. Altered activity patterns in the frontoparietal control network and the default mode network (DMN) …
