- Foundations for the Successful Establishment of a Multidisciplinary Orthoplastic Surgery Team. [Journal Article]Handchir Mikrochir Plast Chir. 2026 Jul 02. [Online ahead of print]HM
- Orthoplastic surgery, a multidisciplinary approach to addressing complex, traumatic reconstruction, has grown significantly since its emergence over three decades ago. Its success in improving both functional and reconstructive outcomes has led to an increased demand for orthoplastic surgeons and the development of dedicated limb salvage programs at institutions around the world. This review outl…

- Push-Up Techniques Affect Elbows and Shoulders: How Should They Be Used? [Journal Article]Handchir Mikrochir Plast Chir. 2026 Jun; 58(3):243-251.HM
- CONCLUSIONS: The movement through the elbow and shoulder is distributed differently during different styles of push-ups. The wrist and elbow can be relatively protected from ligament injury when push-ups are performed on a neutral wrist.Understanding the kinematics during different patterns of loading of the upper extremity can enable a tailored approach to strengthening training, treatment, and rehabilitation of the upper extremity. Specifically, differential strengthening and loading certain areas may be used for training protocols for a specific athletic task (such as throwing).

- Brustimplantat assoziiertes ALCL: ab wann musste aufgeklärt werden? [Journal Article]Handchir Mikrochir Plast Chir. 2026 May 29. [Online ahead of print]HM
- Currently, there is a growing number of lawsuits from patients, primarily those with Biocell breast implants, against the surgeons who performed the procedures. This is partly due to law firms actively seeking out affected individuals to pursue claims for damages based on allegedly inadequate disclosure of the risk of BIA-ALCL. The unsuccessful attempts to obtain financial compensation through pr…

- CONCLUSIONS: Although WALANT is recognized as a very safe procedure, ischemic complications can occur in hand surgery in rare cases. The present study shows an insufficient level of knowledge regarding the antidote phentolamine in the treatment of ischemic complications associated with the WALANT technique. Users of the WALANT technique must be familiar with the procedure and its potential risks in order to be able to respond appropriately in an emergency. Even rare complications may, in case of doubt, lead to functional impairment and medikolegal consequences, particularly when phentolamine is not available. We therefore recommend always maintaining a stock of phentolamine and providing regular training sessions to ensure optimal patient safety.

- [Clearing the Path: Enhancing Kidney Transplant Access Through Panniculectomy]. [Journal Article]Handchir Mikrochir Plast Chir. 2026 May 12. [Online ahead of print]HM
- CONCLUSIONS: Abdominal panniculectomy is a safe and effective procedure for optimising the surgical conditions in obese ESRD patients. In an interdisciplinary, two-stage approach, it can successfully prepare patients previously ineligible for kidney transplantation. The study highlights the importance of individualised surgical strategies in highly selective high-risk populations.

- State of the Art: Scapholunate Ligament Injuries. [Review]Handchir Mikrochir Plast Chir. 2026 Jun; 58(3):252-264.HM
- Scapholunate ligament injuries are the most common ligamentous injuries of the wrist and typically result from high-energy trauma, most often following a fall onto the outstretched hand. This comprehensive review summarizes the current knowledge regarding scapholunate ligament injuries, including anatomy, pathophysiology, diagnostic approaches, and management strategies. Scapholunate ligament inj…

- CONCLUSIONS: The COVID-19 pandemic had significant effects on the epidemiology, mechanisms of injury, and timing of treatment for hand injuries in Germany. These changes illustrate how external crises can influence medical care delivery. The HTR enables data-based analysis of such developments and supports evidence-based planning of future treatment and prevention strategies.

- CONCLUSIONS: However, these data, which are based on a small number of publications, show that the well-accepted and easy-to-use URAM scale can be used as a decision-making aid and research tool for this disease.

- The cosmetic surgery sector in Australia underwent a significant regulatory transformation between 2020 and 2025 following sustained media, professional, and governmental scrutiny. A series of high-profile investigative reports by the ABC Four Corners, Nine Network's 60 Minutes, The Age, and The Sydney Morning Herald revealed systemic deficiencies in clinical oversight, advertising ethics, and pa…

- Orthoplastic surgery integrates principles of trauma surgery and microsurgery to achieve functional restoration in complex limb injuries. While osseous stabilization and soft-tissue coverage have long been established as core components, the importance of early reconstruction of peripheral nerves within the orthoplastic treatment concept is increasingly recognized. The aim of this study is to sys…
