- Data-driven exploration of occupations and lung cancer risks using regularized regression models. [Journal Article]Int J Epidemiol. 2026 Oct 14; 55(6).IJ
- CONCLUSIONS: Two agnostic, data-driven models identified several occupations associated with both increased and decreased lung cancer risks. These associations persisted after accounting for known exposures and covariates, highlighting the need to investigate unidentified occupational factors.

- Differences in SARS-CoV-2 rapid diagnostic testing usage by COVID-19 vaccination status can bias vaccine effectiveness estimates against symptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection from a test-negative design. [Journal Article]Int J Epidemiol. 2026 Oct 14; 55(6).IJ
- CONCLUSIONS: VE estimates against symptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection from a TND may be under- or overestimated, depending on differences in RDT usage between vaccination groups.

- Prehypertension and prediabetes in Rwandan adults aged 18-69 years: insights from the 2022 STEPwise survey. [Journal Article]Int J Epidemiol. 2026 Oct 14; 55(6).IJ
- CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of PreHTN is relatively high, whereas that of PreDM is moderately low. The prevalence of PreHTN was roughly one and a third times that of hypertension and that for prediabetes was about one and a half times that of diabetes. These results provide a basis for early detection and intervention during this critical clinical stage to prevent future burdens of diabetes and hypertension in Rwanda. Rwanda can leverage its functional community health-worker network to enhance screenings and provide community-based basic lifestyle counselling for those at risk of PreDM and PreHTN.

- Forecasting risk-factor distributions by sex and age, 1990-2050: a parametric estimation framework using GBD summary exposure values, demonstrated for Australia. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: This method is extensible to any country or demographic group. To facilitate broader use of this method, we recommend further cross-validation studies for other countries and making key GBD data (e.g. 95th percentiles of risk factors) more publicly available.

- Familial factors in SARS-CoV-2 susceptibility and COVID-19 severity: a nationwide Danish study of adult twins and their spouses. [Journal Article]Int J Epidemiol. 2026 Oct 14; 55(6).IJ
- CONCLUSIONS: Social proximity was a key determinant of infection susceptibility. A three-fold increased risk for spouses suggests that viral load and lifestyle shared between spouses were more important determinants of severe COVID-19 than genetic susceptibility.

- CONCLUSIONS: Our modelling demonstrates that the Aotearoa LRDGs are outdated and need updating to reflect contemporary understandings of the harms associated with alcohol use.

- Processed meat, unprocessed red meat, poultry, seafood, and egg intake and stomach cancer risk: a pooled analysis of 20 cohorts. [Journal Article]Int J Epidemiol. 2026 Oct 14; 55(6).IJ
- CONCLUSIONS: Higher processed meat intake was associated with a modestly increased risk of stomach cancer among current smokers, although residual confounding by smoking dose remains possible. Findings for eggs warrant further investigation.

- Sicker at all ages? Two decades of changing disease histories and mortality in the United States. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: Stagnating US mortality reflects both the growing prevalence of high-morbidity profiles and worsening or stagnating survival within them, highlighting the limited reach of prevention and disease-management efforts.

- Maternal smoking and risk of childhood cancer: a report from the Childhood Cancer and Leukemia International Consortium. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: This analysis supports previous findings that there is little evidence of an effect of maternal prenatal smoking on childhood cancer risk, with few potential exceptions. However, due to numerous other detrimental effects, public health efforts should continue to further reduce its prevalence.
