  • Natural salt mummification in a forensic context: a case report and environmental considerations. [Journal Article]
    Int J Legal Med. 2026 Oct 10. [Online ahead of print]Delteil C, Zuck S, … Tuchtan LIJ
  • Salt mummification is an exceptionally rare phenomenon, resulting from the hygroscopic and antimicrobial properties of saline environments that inhibit microbial decomposition and promote tissue desiccation. While archaeological examples are well known, no modern forensic case has been described to date. We present the first forensic case of natural salt mummification observed in southern France,…
  • Sample size effects on allele diversity, rare-allele recovery, and forensic parameters of 22 autosomal STRs in a cohort of 8,237 Argentines. [Journal Article]

  • CONCLUSIONS: Allelic-diversity recovery and forensic-parameter stability represent distinct properties of a forensic population database and may require substantially different sampling efforts. While combined forensic parameters showed comparatively limited variation across the evaluated sample sizes, comprehensive representation of allelic diversity, particularly rare alleles, requires substantially larger datasets. These findings indicate that population-database adequacy should be evaluated according to its intended forensic application rather than using a single sample-size criterion.
  • Age estimation from DNA methylation in sectioned pulp-free teeth. [Journal Article]
    Int J Legal Med. 2026 Oct 06. [Online ahead of print]Chen S, Hou L, … Zha LIJ
  • Single, fragmented, and pulp-free teeth are challenging specimens for forensic age estimation, particularly when conventional morphological indicators are unavailable or compromised. DNA methylation provides a molecular approach for age prediction and may be useful for degraded dental samples. In this study, we established and evaluated methylation-based age-prediction models using sectioned pulp…
  • Y-chromosome lineages and surnames, two blurry trails. [Journal Article]
    Int J Legal Med. 2026 Sep 23. [Online ahead of print]Geronazzo A, Muzzio M, … Bailliet GIJ
  • In societies following the paternal transmission of surnames, their distribution should keep the same trail as that of Y-chromosome lineages. We evaluated this hypothesis by establishing the Y-STR haplotypes of two hundred and thirty-two individuals from the Argentine Northwest, distributed among one hundred and forty-eight surnames. We compared these two sources of information, searching for mat…
