- Assessing the quality of end-of-life care in systemic sclerosis. [Journal Article]Intern Med J. 2026 Oct 11. [Online ahead of print]IM
- CONCLUSIONS: End-of-life care in SSc was broadly consistent with the National Consensus standards, identifying strong rheumatology involvement, multidisciplinary care and frequent palliative care referral. However, differences in care according to site of death highlight opportunities to increase proactive palliative care involvement and regular review of goals of care to ensure high-quality end-of-life care across all settings.

- Performance and concordance of contemporary large language models on Royal Australasian College of Physicians examination questions: an exploratory analysis. [Journal Article]Intern Med J. 2026 Oct 08. [Online ahead of print]IM
- We assessed six publicly available large language models (LLM) on Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) adult medicine written examination questions. In a 30-question set with answers, models achieved 93% correct responses overall, and accuracy was higher for text-based than visual-media questions. In a 170-question exploratory set without an answer key, complete inter-model agreement o…

- Taking responsibility for the environmental impact of medical societies. [Journal Article]Intern Med J. 2026 Oct 05. [Online ahead of print]IM
- It is well recognised that modern healthcare has an enormous carbon footprint that is contributing to the climate crisis. However, the contribution of medical societies and their associated activities is largely ignored. The Australian and New Zealand Society of Nephrology and its Environmental Sustainability Committee (ESC) are taking action to mitigate their impact on climate change. This viewp…

- Outcomes of a co-designed clinical decision support tool for inpatient glycaemia management. [Journal Article]Intern Med J. 2026 Oct 01. [Online ahead of print]IM
- CONCLUSIONS: Despite multidisciplinary co-design, education and implementation, non-interruptive alerts for glycaemia were not electronically acknowledged in most cases. The alert did not change medication management and thus was unlikely to be the cause of reduction in recurrence of adverse glycaemic events. Further research is required to determine barriers, to develop strategies to improve user engagement and to optimise glycaemic-based electronic alerts, aiming to assist health professionals working in acute care.

- Epidemiology and health burden of infective endocarditis: a comparative analysis of Australian vs global trends from 1990 to 2021. [Journal Article]Intern Med J. 2026 Oct 01. [Online ahead of print]IM
- CONCLUSIONS: Australia's IE profile is distinct, with a sharper rise in prevalence and IE-associated heart failure, despite declining mortality and disability. These findings suggest improved survival but increasing chronic morbidity, underscoring the need for enhanced post-acute care models and further research to explore underlying drivers, including evolving risk factors, healthcare access and long-term cardiac outcomes.

- Preventing infections after CD19-directed chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapies for lymphoma: a consensus practice statement. [Journal Article]Intern Med J. 2026 Sep 30. [Online ahead of print]IM
- Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapies directed against cluster of differentiation 19 (CD19) are a standard of care for relapsed or refractory B-cell lymphomas. Infection is the leading cause of non-relapse mortality, and this risk may persist for years after CAR T-cell receipt. Recipients of CAR T-cells can present in various clinical settings, and few trials have prospectively assesse…

- Chronic kidney disease (CKD) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) are major causes of morbidity and mortality in people with type 2 diabetes (T2D). Contemporary CKD guidelines increasingly support incorporation of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) as an additional pillar of cardiorenal therapy alongside renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) blockade, sodium-glucose co-transpo…

- When patients seek information about voluntary assisted dying in an institutional non-participating specialist palliative care service: outcomes and learnings. [Journal Article]Intern Med J. 2026 Sep 22. [Online ahead of print]IM
- CONCLUSIONS: INP SPCS play a meaningful role in providing palliative care to patients who seek information on the VAD process. These findings demonstrate a need to improve documentation and communication frameworks, explore clinician experiences in INP settings and clarify the relationship between palliative care needs and VAD engagement.
