- Implementation Evaluation of 41 Nurse-Initiated Care Protocols in an Emergency Department: A Mixed Methods Study. [Journal Article]J Adv Nurs. 2026 Oct 08. [Online ahead of print]JA
- CONCLUSIONS: Nurse-initiated care protocols were successfully embedded into routine emergency nursing practice, demonstrating high adoption and strong implementation fidelity. Nurse-initiated care can be effectively operationalised in complex ED settings when supported by structured education, engaged leadership and governance and workflow integration. However, sustained implementation requires ongoing attention to workload pressures, protocol scope and continuing education to ensure nurses have the opportunity to use NICPs in routine practice.

- Doing It All or Doing It Best: An Umbrella Review of the Effectiveness of Specialist Cancer Nurse-Led Care. [Review]J Adv Nurs. 2026 Oct 07. [Online ahead of print]JA
- CONCLUSIONS: Nurses are effective at delivering care across the cancer trajectory but are most effective at self-management and behavioural support and symptom management. Robust full economic evaluations are needed to determine the value of cancer nurse-led interventions. Findings from this review can be used to guide policy and strategic planning on where specialist cancer nurses are best placed for maximum impact. No Patient or Public Contribution.

- Violence Against Emergency Department Healthcare Workers: A Nationwide Retrospective Descriptive Study of Criminal Court Judgements. [Journal Article]J Adv Nurs. 2026 Oct 05. [Online ahead of print]JA
- CONCLUSIONS: This study identified ED violence as a multifactorial phenomenon involving alcohol intoxication, repeat offenders, and concentration during diagnosis and treatment, with nurses and physicians particularly affected due to their direct patient-care roles. Multilevel institutional strategies, combined with public awareness efforts, are needed to safeguard ED personnel.

- Task Source Matters: Eye-Tracking Evidence on Cognitive Load and Decision Accuracy in ICU Multitasking. [Journal Article]J Adv Nurs. 2026 Sep 30. [Online ahead of print]JA
- CONCLUSIONS: Task source and disease severity influence cognitive processing patterns during ICU multitasking. Higher cognitive workload does not necessarily impair clinical decision accuracy, and task-related information characteristics play a critical role in shaping decision-making performance.

- 'We're All in It Together': Emergency Nurses' Experiences of Secondary Traumatic Stress Within the Practice Environment. [Journal Article]J Adv Nurs. 2026 Sep 30. [Online ahead of print]JA
- CONCLUSIONS: ENs and nurse leaders acknowledged the impact of STS on their personal and professional lives and emphasized how the practice environment shaped their experiences. They perceived the accessibility of organizational resources, leadership behaviours, and team culture as influencing the individual strategies ENs use to manage the effects of repeated exposure to others' traumatic experiences. STS is a predictable occupational hazard for ENs; thus, healthcare organizations must invest in nurse-identified supports to preserve workforce well-being and clinical expertise.

- Nursing Lobbying and EU Health Workforce Policy: A Qualitative Policy Analysis. [Journal Article]J Adv Nurs. 2026 Sep 30. [Online ahead of print]JA
- CONCLUSIONS: Findings from this single-case study suggest that lobbying can be understood as a legitimate dimension of nursing political leadership within European health policymaking processes in this context. When approached as a sustained, evidence-informed and strategically timed practice, lobbying can enable nurses and their representative organisations to shape pre-legislative policy frameworks with implications for future health workforce legislation.

- When Dying Patients Fall Silent: How Nurses Navigate Decision-Making in the Last Days of Life-A Qualitative Study. [Journal Article]J Adv Nurs. 2026 Sep 29. [Online ahead of print]JA
- CONCLUSIONS: Nurses' decision-making when caring for the unresponsive dying patient is complex. Decision-making evolves through the nurse's intentionality in assessment, communication skills, accommodation of uncertainty, and through implicit ethical and moral agency. Recognising the vulnerability of unresponsive dying patients is essential to supporting person-centred care.
