  • Cataract Surgery in Patients Unable to Lie Flat: A Systematic Review and Surgical Decision-Making Framework. [Journal Article]
J Cataract Refract Surg. 2026 Oct 27. [Online ahead of print]Coroneo MT, Maloof AGJC
  • CONCLUSIONS: There are three distinct categories of approaching cataract surgery on patients unable to recline, which although still technically challenging, can increase the number of patients eligible to undergo cataract surgery in both developed and developing countries. We present a clinical decision framework proposed to guide approach selection based on mechanism of positional limitation, equipment availability, and case complexity.
  • Ophthalmologists' Perspectives on Cataract Surgery Sedation: A National Survey Study. [Journal Article]
J Cataract Refract Surg. 2026 Oct 26. [Online ahead of print]Bao PH, Luo Y, … Chen CLJC
  • In this national survey assessing US cataract surgery sedation practices, among 659 of 3,406 (19.3%) respondents, 578 (87.7%) routinely performed cataract surgery with anesthesia care. For sedation, 534 (81.0%) routinely used light-to-moderate IV sedation; 69 (10.5%) routinely used oral or no additional sedation. Forty-two (6.4%) performed cataract surgery in office-based surgery (OBS) suites. Fo…
  • OpenEvidence versus Six Leading Large Language Models in Refractive Surgery: Does Curated Medical Evidence Confer an Advantage? [Journal Article]
J Cataract Refract Surg. 2026 Oct 26. [Online ahead of print]Wallerstein A, Gallant M, Gauvin MJC
  • CONCLUSIONS: OpenEvidence demonstrated significantly lower accuracy than the six evaluated general-purpose LLMs and did not exceed the BCSC Self-Assessment program user benchmark on this standardized refractive surgery multiple-choice assessment. This task-specific difference was not fully explained by response-format noncompliance and should not be interpreted as direct evidence of globally inferior medical knowledge or performance in open-ended clinical applications.
  • Continuity of Care and Long-Term Outcome Surveillance After Posterior Chamber Phakic IOL Implantation. [Journal Article]
J Cataract Refract Surg. 2026 Oct 26. [Online ahead of print]Bair H, Jones K, Ayres BDJC
  • Posterior chamber phakic intraocular lenses have a strong short-to-medium-term safety profile on the modern central-port platform, and a 2025 US Food and Drug Administration expansion of the indicated age range for a central-port phakic IOL to 21 to 60 years widens the eligible population. These lenses are to remain in the eye for decades, yet the field has defined what to monitor without buildin…
  • Comparison of the Moussa Intraocular Lens Formula to contemporary formulas in a multicenter study. [Journal Article]
    J Cataract Refract Surg. 2026 Oct 20. [Online ahead of print]Kiraly P, Hamze H, … Moussa GJC
  • CONCLUSIONS: The Moussa formula demonstrated high predictive accuracy across multiple biometry platforms, with statistically lower overall MAE than the comparator formulas. Absolute differences from the closest-performing formulas were modest, and ±0.50D outcomes were similar to Kane and EVO. These findings support Moussa as a clinically relevant contemporary option for IOL power calculation, with encouraging results in short and long eyes requiring further targeted validation.
