- Ray-Tracing Aberrometry and the Dysfunctional Lens Index for Objective Assessment of Posterior Capsular Opacification. [Journal Article]J Cataract Refract Surg. 2026 Oct 14. [Online ahead of print]JC
- CONCLUSIONS: Ray-tracing aberrometry offers an objective view of PCO-induced optical degradation. Because the DLI tracks internal aberrations and MTF yet remains independent of high-contrast acuity, it captures impairment that CDVA alone overlooks, and returns to clear-capsule levels after capsulotomy. The DLI thus serves as a useful adjunctive marker for gauging PCO-related degradation and monitoring treatment response.

- Clinical and Refractive Outcomes of Secondary IOL Fixation Using Small-Incision Scleral Suture Fixation versus Intrascleral Haptic Fixation. [Journal Article]J Cataract Refract Surg. 2026 Oct 05. [Online ahead of print]JC
- CONCLUSIONS: Both small-incision SSF and ISHF are safe and effective for secondary IOL implantation in adults. Refractive outcomes were comparable, with SSF demonstrating slightly greater predictability and fewer reoperations, while ISHF was associated with less early hypotony. Technique selection should be guided by surgeon experience, IOL choice, and patient-specific factors.

- Joint Assessment of Material Exposure in Space (JAMES): Laboratory analyses of intraocular lenses after low-Earth-orbit exposure on the exterior of the International Space Station. [Journal Article]J Cataract Refract Surg. 2026 Oct 02. [Online ahead of print]JC
- CONCLUSIONS: This exploratory study showed that IOL materials may differ in susceptibility to environmental hazards in LEO. These findings may inform packaging, shipping, and storage of IOLs in space, as ophthalmic care will be required for future long-duration space missions and eventual extraterrestrial habitation.

- CONCLUSIONS: Vertical pupil elongation and poor dilation after pharmacologic mydriasis were independently associated with IFIS. Assessment of pupil shape, in addition to pupil size, may improve preoperative identification of eyes at risk for IFIS.

- Optimizing flange geometry with a 532-nm green laser for four-flanged scleral fixation: an experimental comparison with thermal cautery. [Journal Article]J Cataract Refract Surg. 2026 Sep 28. [Online ahead of print]JC
- CONCLUSIONS: Laser-assisted flange formation appears to be a feasible alternative to thermal cautery. In this dry-laboratory model, 1.0-mm laser heating and 1.5-mm cautery heating provided practical target flange dimensions while maintaining modest flange height.

- Jacques Daviel (1696-1762) is credited with introducing planned primary cataract extraction. We analyzed historical books, newspapers, manuscripts, and documents discovered between 2004 and 2026, including previously unreported notices in the 1750 Gazette de Cologne. On July 7, 1750, Daviel performed an experimental crystalline lens extraction in a sheep before professors in Louvain. Although he …

- CONCLUSIONS: The MS-39 AL provides highly repeatable biometric measurements and shows good agreement with the IOLMaster 700 for most parameters in both cataractous and clear-lens eyes.

- Biometry-Driven Selection of IOL Power Calculation Formulas Using the ESCRS IOL Calculator. [Journal Article]J Cataract Refract Surg. 2026 Sep 11. [Online ahead of print]JC
- CONCLUSIONS: Selecting IOL power calculation formulas according to biometric subgroups defined by K, ACD, and AL improves refractive prediction accuracy compared with individual formulas. A biometry-driven formula selection strategy using the ESCRS IOL Calculator may provide a clinically useful approach for optimizing refractive outcomes after cataract surgery.

- Femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery versus phacoemulsification in shallow anterior chambers: a systematic review and meta-analysis. [Journal Article]J Cataract Refract Surg. 2026 Sep 11. [Online ahead of print]JC
- CONCLUSIONS: FLACS was associated with fewer early postoperative complications, supported by moderate-certainty evidence, and with lower endothelial cell loss and ultrasound energy, although the magnitude of these benefits remains uncertain on low-certainty evidence.

- Macular Edema and Intraocular Pressure Outcomes Following Periocular versus Topical Corticosteroids After Phacoemulsification: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis. [Journal Article]J Cataract Refract Surg. 2026 Sep 11. [Online ahead of print]JC
- CONCLUSIONS: Current evidence found no clear differences in PCME risk, postoperative IOP, or BCVA between periocular and topical corticosteroids following uncomplicated phacoemulsification. Findings should be interpreted cautiously given the heterogeneity and low certainty evidence. Clinical use should consider drug, formulation, dose, injection route, and the need for longer-term monitoring.
