- Electroconvulsive Therapy in Severe and Refractory Somatic Symptom Disorder: A Case Report. [Journal Article]J ECT. 2026 Oct 13. [Online ahead of print]JE
- Somatic Symptom Disorder (SSD) is characterized by persistent, distressing somatic symptoms accompanied by disproportionate health-related cognitions and behaviors. Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) has no established indication in SSD; however, isolated case reports have suggested po\tential benefit in severe, refractory presentations. We report a 46-year-old postmenopausal woman with severe, refr…

- Percussion Pacing as a Rescue for Peri-Stimulus Asystole During Electroconvulsive Therapy. [Journal Article]J ECT. 2026 Oct 13. [Online ahead of print]JE
- Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) can provoke a brief parasympathetic surge, commonly causing transient sinus bradycardia or a short sinus pause. Most events last only seconds and resolve without intervention. Rarely, however, bradyarrhythmia or asystole may persist long enough to threaten cerebral perfusion, requiring anesthesia teams to respond immediately. We report the case of a male patient wi…

- Anti-inflammatory Effect of Electroconvulsive Therapy and Association Between Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor Increases and Nonrelapse: A Prospective One-Year Follow-up Study. [Journal Article]J ECT. 2026 Oct 12. [Online ahead of print]JE
- CONCLUSIONS: An acute course of ECT is associated with anti-inflammatory biological changes and differential modulation of serum BDNF. Increases in BDNF after ECT may be linked to a reduced risk of relapse, suggesting that serum BDNF could be a potential prognostic biomarker for long-term outcomes following ECT.

- Navigating Electroconvulsive Therapy in Patients on GLP-1 Receptor Agonists: Balancing Safety, Compliance, and Treatment Consistency: A Case Report. [Journal Article]J ECT. 2026 Oct 08. [Online ahead of print]JE
- Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is typically performed under general anesthesia without a secured airway, placing patients with retained gastric contents at increased risk of aspiration. As more patients present for ECT while taking GLP-1 receptor agonists, standard fasting requirements pose unique safety and patient-experience challenges. A 24-hour clear-liquid diet every other day is burdensome…

- Increases in Regional Brain Volume and Thickness Following ECT and Relationships With Changes in Depressive Symptoms and Peripheral Inflammation. [Journal Article]J ECT. 2026 Oct 08. [Online ahead of print]JE
- CONCLUSIONS: Although we previously found that changes in inflammatory measures were associated with changes in affective and cognitive symptoms of depression, just as DLPFC and DMPFC increases were, these biomarkers were not associated with each other. It is possible that these processes relate to clinical effects of ECT through independent or distally related means, although further research is required.

- Knowledge, Experience, and Attitudes Toward Electroconvulsive Therapy Among Psychiatrists in Uzbekistan. [Journal Article]J ECT. 2026 Oct 08. [Online ahead of print]JE
- CONCLUSIONS: Psychiatrists in Uzbekistan reported limited ECT training and experience, substantial knowledge gaps, and restrictive attitudes toward ECT. Clinical exposure was the strongest independent predictor of greater knowledge and more favorable attitudes, supporting the importance of expanding supervised ECT training and educational opportunities.

- Electroconvulsive Therapy for Postoperative Catatonia in a Patient With Intellectual Disability: Successful Seizure Induction After Multimodal Technical and Anesthetic Optimization. [Journal Article]J ECT. 2026 Oct 01. [Online ahead of print]JE
- Catatonia is a neuropsychiatric syndrome that may complicate medical and surgical conditions but is often underrecognized, particularly in patients with intellectual disability. Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is an established treatment for benzodiazepine-resistant catatonia, although seizure induction can be difficult in some cases. We report a 52-year-old man with intellectual disability who d…

- Response to Electroconvulsive Therapy in a Patient With SCN2A-Variant Catatonia Is Associated With Postictal Spreading Depolarization. [Journal Article]J ECT. 2026 Sep 22. [Online ahead of print]JE
- An 18-year-old female patient with a history of autism spectrum disorder and SCN2A loss-of-function variant received a course of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) for catatonia, which had been present and disabling for 1 year. After a partial lorazepam taper, bitemporal ECT was initiated. The patient had a rapid and robust response to ECT with improvement in the Bush-Francis Catatonia Rating Scale …

- Evidence Base for Positioning Electroconvulsive Therapy and Magnetic Seizure Therapy in Treatment Guidelines for Major Depressive Disorder. [Journal Article]J ECT. 2026 Sep 21. [Online ahead of print]JE
- Major depressive disorder (MDD) is characterized in a substantial proportion of patients by an inadequate response to standard pharmacological and psychotherapeutic interventions, thereby increasing the need for more rapid and potent biological treatments. In this context, convulsive neuromodulation therapies play a central clinical role, particularly in severe, psychotic, treatment-resistant, or…
