- Erythrocyte phosphatidylserine externalization shows greater discriminatory performance than red cell distribution width for early recurrence or progression in hepatocellular carcinoma. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: PS externalization identifies an HCC-associated erythrocyte injury phenotype and is a candidate marker for 6-month recurrence or progression. Experimental findings support a functional contribution of glutathione depletion to membrane injury, accompanied by PPP-NADPH-related metabolic and membrane-skeletal alterations.

- Columnar-lined esophagus measuring less than 1 cm as a risk factor for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma in Japanese men. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: This is the first study to demonstrate a significant association between USSBE and ESCC. USSBE may help identify individuals at increased risk of ESCC. Exploratory subgroup findings according to GA status require further validation.

- Claims-based frailty and short-term adverse events after esophageal or gastric endoscopic submucosal dissection in older adults. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: Among older adults undergoing esophageal or gastric ESD, HFRS-defined claims-based frailty was associated with higher rates of short-term adverse events, particularly perforation/peritonitis and delayed bleeding. These findings suggest that routinely collected claims data may help identify vulnerable patients who warrant closer peri-procedural assessment and monitoring.

- Risk factors for non-closure of diverting loop ileostomy after rectal cancer surgery: a multicenter prospective study conducted by the Clinical Study Group of Osaka University, Colorectal Group. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: Although most diverting loop ileostomies were successfully closed, 6.9% were not reversed. Patients with stoma non-closure more frequently had ASA-PS ≥2, advanced clinical stage, and low serum albumin levels than those who underwent stoma closure. These findings may be useful for preoperative counseling.

- Gut microbiome-enteric virus interactions: mechanisms, clinical implications, and translational directions. [Review]
- The gut microbiome influences epithelial barrier integrity, metabolite availability, mucosal immune tone, and vaccine responsiveness, all of which are relevant to enterically transmitted viral infection. Norovirus and rotavirus primarily replicate in the intestinal mucosa and cause acute gastroenteritis, whereas poliovirus replicates in the gut and may disseminate systemically. Hepatitis A virus …

- Healthcare burden and clinical spectrum of symptomatic polycystic liver disease in Japan: a nationwide epidemiological survey. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: This nationwide survey provides the first comprehensive epidemiological and clinical characterization of symptomatic PLD in Japan and establishes a benchmark for future disease severity classification, clinical management, and prospective studies.

- Clinical characteristics and outcomes of bacterial and viral gastrointestinal infection by pathogen: a large-scale observational study in United States. [Journal Article]J Gastroenterol. 2026 Sep 30. [Online ahead of print]JG
- CONCLUSIONS: Severe clinical outcomes following GI infection were not rare across investigated pathogens with the elderly having the highest mortality rate. A limitation of this study was that it assessed only all-cause outcome events. The study findings may guide future development and allocation of preventive and therapeutic interventions.

- Prior vedolizumab exposure and fibroblast-derived MMP13 are associated with ustekinumab nonresponse in ulcerative colitis. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: Prior vedolizumab exposure was associated with lower ustekinumab effectiveness, suggesting that treatment history may be important when determining therapeutic sequencing in ulcerative colitis. Fibroblast-derived matrix metalloproteinase 13 represents a promising molecular marker associated with nonresponse to ustekinumab and may reflect an interleukin-1β-driven inflammatory fibroblast program linked to diminished treatment responsiveness.

- NOTCH-mediated glial CXCL9:SPP1 polarization by GSK3β exacerbates postnatal enteric nervous system dysfunction in Hirschsprung disease. [Journal Article]J Gastroenterol. 2026 Sep 15. [Online ahead of print]JG
- CONCLUSIONS: GSK3β upregulation promotes NOTCH signaling pathway activation, which in turn regulates CS polarization and potentially exacerbates postnatal ENS dysfunction and aggravates HSCR-associated complications.

- The evolving landscape of chronic pancreatitis in Japan: findings from a nationwide epidemiological survey in 2021. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of CP in Japan continues to increase. The aging CP population, the increasing proportion of alcohol-related CP among women, and the substantial burden of diabetes, exocrine insufficiency, and malignancy underscore the growing healthcare impact of CP and the need for effective prevention and long-term management strategies.
