- Neurobiological insights into psychotic depression from magnetic resonance imaging: a systematic review. [Systematic Review]
- Psychotic depression (PD) is increasingly recognized as a distinct psychiatric condition with unique neurobiological features. To identify neuroimaging biomarkers of PD, we systematically reviewed evidence across structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), functional MRI, diffusion tensor imaging, and magnetic resonance spectroscopy, following PRISMA guidelines. PubMed, MEDLINE, and Embase were …

- Dissociable anterior and posterior beta-burst dynamics track thought disorder in schizophrenia. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: Schizophrenia is associated with dissociable anterior and posterior beta-burst abnormalities that track objective speech markers of thought disorder. These findings suggest impaired hierarchical coordination of predictive beta signalling as a candidate neurophysiological account linking intrinsic network dysfunction to disorganized thought.

- Exercise as a complementary intervention for adults with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder: a neurobiological analysis. [Review]J Psychiatry Neurosci. 2026 Jan 01; 51:1-26.JP
- CONCLUSIONS: Future research should attempt to confirm the efficacy of exercise in reducing ADHD symptoms in adults as well as the proposed mechanisms for such a relationship. Verification of these issues would open the door to an evidence-based, inexpensive, widely available, and broadly beneficial complementary intervention for adults with ADHD.

- Fronto-cingulate gamma synchrony predicts deep brain stimulation response in treatment-resistant depression: preliminary evidence. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: These preliminary findings suggest that VCVS-DBS may engage a fronto-cingulate gamma network involved in cognitive-affective control in TRD. They further suggest that clinical response may depend on both baseline dACC-VLPFC network organization and DBS-related modulation of gamma synchrony, highlighting potential relevance to cognitive-affective regulation across psychiatric disorders. Given the small sample size, these findings should be considered hypothesis-generating and require confirmation in larger cohorts.

- Reimagining the biopsychosocial model: hierarchical mechanisms from transdiagnostic to precision psychiatry. [Review]
- Bio-psycho-social models of psychopathology have been long proposed. Despite this, few details have been identified in part due to the poor match between clinical phenomenology and diagnostic categories (e.g., overlapping symptoms and comorbidity). In the present paper, the author reviews the evidence for three factors thought to affect vulnerability across diagnoses: mesocorticolimbic function, …

- A potential neuroimaging biomarker for depression in migraine patients: imbalance in excitation and inhibition in the medial superior frontal cortex. [Journal Article]
- Background: Depression is a common psychological and behavioural symptom experienced by people with migraines. However, the underlying neural mechanisms of depressive symptoms in this population are unclear. Methods: In this study, we investigated the neural mechanisms underlying excitation-inhibition imbalance in patients with migraine accompanied by depressive symptoms (MD) using the Hurst expo…

- Cognitive remediation in people with bipolar disorder and cognitive dysfunction: a systematic review. [Systematic Review]
- CONCLUSIONS: Current evidence from enriched samples suggests that CR may improve specific cognitive domains in BD, but overall results remain inconclusive. Future trials should employ rigorous cognitive screening, harmonized outcome measures, and more individualized interventions to clarify efficacy. PROSPERO registration ID: CRD42025642423.

- Specific frontostriatal structural alterations underlie emotional instability but not inattention in ADHD and healthy individuals. [Journal Article]J Psychiatry Neurosci. 2026 Jan 01; 51:1-10.JP
- Background: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is characterized by emotional dysregulation, such as emotional instability, and by non-emotional symptoms, including inattention. These symptom domains are dimensionally distributed in the general population and are hypothesized to reflect both overlapping and distinct structural and functional features of cortical and subcortical brain …

- Dynamics of thoughts-novel candidate marker for differential-diagnosis of mental disorders? [Review]J Psychiatry Neurosci. 2026 Jan 01; 51:1-9.JP
- Thoughts are traditionally classified by their cognitive contents, such as task-related versus task-unrelated or internally versus externally oriented. However, content-based distinctions often lack diagnostic specificity in psychiatric disorders, where similar thought contents may manifest across conditions such as schizophrenia and major depressive disorder. Here, we propose a complementary fra…

- Differences in cortical gyrification and fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations between early- and late-onset obsessive-compulsive disorder. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: Our results emphasize the importance of the thalamus in the pathophysiology regardless of the age-of-onset subtype of OCD. In addition, altered fALFF in the lateral occipital cortex, not accompanied by deficits of LGI, could represent a disruption of normal functional developmental processes resulting from the OCD onset at a young age. Future study should examine the relationship between the alteration of fALFF in lateral occipital cortex and clinical and treatment-refractory features of early-onset OCD, potentially improving therapeutic strategies.

- Major depressive disorder is associated with reduced intrinsic connectivity between the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis and ventral striatum. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: Reduced intrinsic connectivity between the BNST and striatum may reflect altered activity in the neural circuits responsible for stress and reward processing. These findings can be used to guide future work investigating risk factors for MDD and provide potential targets for clinical intervention.
