  • Effectiveness of amantadine and memantine in catatonia: A retrospective cohort study. [Journal Article]
    J Psychopharmacol. 2026 Oct 27; :2698811261495551. [Online ahead of print]Duque L, Lee JH, … Luccarelli JJP
  • CONCLUSIONS: This represents the largest cohort treated with amantadine or memantine for catatonia. Findings suggest significant symptom reduction, supporting their potential role as an adjunctive option. Prospective studies are needed to clarify predictors of response and comparative effectiveness.
  • Psychedelics and psychosis: A systematic review of recent-era studies (1984-2025). [Review]
J Psychopharmacol. 2026 Oct 27; :2698811261488575. [Online ahead of print]Reis JAS, Ueta LZ, … Dos Santos RGJP
  • CONCLUSIONS: The risk of prolonged psychosis remains remarkably low in controlled clinical settings where rigorous screening and supervision are employed. Personal/family history of psychosis and unsupervised, naturalistic use appear to be risk factors for psychosis. Although causality remains difficult to establish, these findings support the need for careful risk stratification, the adoption of clear diagnostic parameters, and trained clinical oversight as psychedelic-assisted therapies advance toward broader clinical populations.
  • Effects of Δ[9]-tetrahydrocannabinol on affiliative social behaviour: A systematic review of rodent studies. [Review]
    J Psychopharmacol. 2026 Sep 30; :2698811261478615. [Online ahead of print]Ahmed M, Pereira CF, … Kloiber SJP
  • CONCLUSIONS: These findings highlight the complexity of THC's behavioural effects and suggest a need for more rigorous, sex-balanced preclinical research. Moreover, suboptimal methodological quality across studies hinders replicability and generalizability. More thorough and streamlined reporting is needed to support the translational validity of this area of research. As interest grows in ECS-targeted therapies for psychiatric disorders, understanding how THC modulates affiliative social behaviour under different conditions will be essential to inform safe and effective clinical strategies.
  • Proper assessment of the response to a test drug needs a treatment-free control group in the experimental design. [Journal Article]

  • In preclinical biomedical research, the response elicited by a test drug is commonly evaluated relative to the response produced by its vehicle, with the difference assumed to represent the magnitude of the drug's action. However, there are many reports that the administration of vehicle can provoke a measurable response. For vehicles that are presumed to be inert (e.g. saline), this likely arise…
  • Chronopharmacology and implications for the safety and efficacy of anticonvulsants, antipsychotics, and antidepressants: A systematic review. [Review]
    J Psychopharmacol. 2026 Sep 25; :2698811261488466. [Online ahead of print]Tan VY, Wong S, … McIntyre RSJP
  • CONCLUSIONS: Current evidence provides preliminary support that circadian rhythm may differentially affect the pharmacology of select psychotropic agents. Whether the foregoing translates into clinically meaningful differences in efficacy, tolerability, and/or posology of the evaluated agents/classes requires systematic evaluation. Given that evidence is predominantly preclinical, further studies using clinically relevant repeated-dose regimens and disease-relevant animal models are required.
  • Early intervention with clozapine: Is there a neurobiological critical period for treatment-resistant schizophrenia? [Journal Article]
    J Psychopharmacol. 2026 Sep 25; :2698811261488465. [Online ahead of print]Krishnadas R, Leong IL, … Palaniyappan LJP
  • Clozapine is the most effective treatment for treatment-resistant schizophrenia, yet it is often introduced late. This article proposes a critical period hypothesis, arguing that clozapine is most effective when started during a stage of illness in which network plasticity and synaptic substrate are still partially preserved. We outline a neurobiological continuum from first-line antipsychotic re…
