  • The risk of mpox false positive results in high transmission settings: evidence from a multi-site observational study in DR Congo. [Journal Article]
Lancet Infect Dis. 2026 Sep 15. [Online ahead of print]O'Driscoll M, De Vos E, … Azman ASLI
  • CONCLUSIONS: More than one in three qPCR-positive mpox diagnoses in these settings might have been driven by the environmental MPXV DNA burden, with serological data independently supporting this finding. Strengthened decontamination of clinical areas, Ct value cutoffs optimised to the local context, and additional investigation of high-Ct specimens, including clinical progressions, epidemiological links, and repeat testing, could substantially improve diagnostic specificity while preserving sensitivity.
  • Is a tiered classification framework needed for sexually transmitted infections? [Review]
Lancet Infect Dis. 2026 Sep 08. [Online ahead of print]Maatouk I, Lewis DA, Unemo MLI
  • Working definitions of a sexually transmitted infection (STI) exist, but no universally agreed operational classification links those definitions to programme, funding, and surveillance decisions. The boundary of the STI category determines which infections enter surveillance, receive programme funding, and are included in testing and screening. Yet, the fields of microbiology, clinical medicine,…
  • Nucleic acid amplification testing and genome sequencing for WHO priority viruses in Africa: a scoping review. [Review]
    Lancet Infect Dis. 2026 Sep 07. [Online ahead of print]Chan K, Greenland-Bews C, … Shah SLI
  • Emerging viruses continue to pose serious public health threats across Africa, with recurrent outbreaks exposing gaps in diagnostics and surveillance systems. Nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs) and genome sequencing are increasingly important for diagnostics and outbreak responses; however, their routine implementation is fragmented. This scoping review examines NAATs and genome sequencing …
