- GsMTx4 Alleviates Knee Osteoarthritis by Inhibiting PIEZO1/2-mediated Chondrocyte Apoptosis. [Journal Article]Orthopedics. 2026 Sep-Oct; 49(5):e443-e450.O
- CONCLUSIONS: Aberrant PIEZO1/2 upregulation and activation may be linked to chondrocyte apoptosis, cartilage degeneration, and pain hypersensitivity in KOA. Blocking PIEZO channels with GsMTx4 might mitigate pathological joint remodeling, suggesting PIEZO channels could represent potential therapeutic targets for KOA intervention.

- Impact of Methamphetamine Use on Injury Characteristics and Postoperative Outcomes in Upper Extremity Fractures. [Journal Article]Orthopedics. 2026 Sep-Oct; 49(5):e457-e464.O
- CONCLUSIONS: Methamphetamine use was associated with higher-energy injury mechanisms and increased health care use, namely ED visits. No other estimable perioperative complication differed significantly, and no deaths occurred. Operative management should not be withheld solely because of methamphetamine use; targeted case management may reduce postoperative use.

- A Distinct Posterior Cruciate Ligament Avulsion Fracture Involving the Weight-bearing Lateral Tibial Plateau as a Single Fragment: A Case Report. [Case Reports]Orthopedics. 2026 Sep-Oct; 49(5):e472-e475.O
- Posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) avulsion fractures usually involve the tibial insertion as a discrete fragment. Although combined PCL avulsion and tibial plateau fractures have been described, a continuous fracture fragment involving both the PCL insertion and the weight-bearing lateral tibial plateau is rarely reported and may require different treatment considerations. We report a woman, aged…

- Staged Soft Tissue Reconstruction of Traumatic Right Foot Degloving Using Wound Matrix. [Case Reports]Orthopedics. 2026 Sep-Oct; 49(5):e480-e483.O
- CONCLUSIONS: This case illustrates the success and utility of a staged surgical approach, combined with a synthetic dermal matrix to achieve durable soft tissue coverage and limb salvage following a severe traumatic degloving injury of the foot.

- Suture Anchor Fixation Combined With Transosseous Tunnels for a Large Patellar Osteochondral Fracture After Acute Patellar Dislocation. [Case Reports]Orthopedics. 2026 Sep-Oct; 49(5):e476-e479.O
- Patellar osteochondral fractures (OCFs) are common concomitant injuries in acute patellar dislocation, particularly in adolescents. Large free fragments (>15 mm in diameter) are relatively rare and require surgical reduction and fixation to restore articular surface congruity and prevent mechanical symptoms and secondary patellofemoral osteoarthritis. This article reports the case of a 16-year-ol…

- Characterization of Infrapatellar Fat Pad-derived Cell Concentrates Obtained During Knee Arthroscopy: Nonenzymatic Versus Enzymatic Processing. [Journal Article]Orthopedics. 2026 Sep-Oct; 49(5):e437-e442.O
- CONCLUSIONS: Non-enzymatic processing yielded heterogeneous IPFP-derived cell concentrates that could be culture expanded, but enzymatic processing produced higher cell yield and higher proportions of most measured marker-positive populations. The findings do not establish equivalence, clinical efficacy, complete International Society for Cell and Gene Therapy characterization, or quantitative viability.

- Impact of Regional Anesthesia on the Incidence and Detection of Acute Compartment Syndrome: A Systematic Review. [Systematic Review]Orthopedics. 2026 Sep-Oct; 49(5):e465-e471.O
- CONCLUSIONS: Current evidence does not demonstrate that RA increases ACS incidence or delays its recognition in orthopedic trauma patients. RA appears to be a reasonable analgesic option when combined with standardized postoperative monitoring and a high index of clinical suspicion.

- Preoperative Serum Albumin as an Independent Risk Factor for Prolonged Wound Drainage Following Proximal Femoral Nail Osteosynthesis in Older Hip Fracture Patients: A Retrospective Cohort Study. [Journal Article]Orthopedics. 2026 Sep-Oct; 49(5):e451-e456.O
- CONCLUSIONS: Preoperative serum albumin level is an independent and powerful risk factor for the development of PWD in older patients undergoing hip fracture surgery treated with PFN osteosynthesis. Early preoperative assessment of serum albumin and targeted nutritional optimization may be a modifiable and cost-effective intervention to reduce the incidence of PWD.

- Selective Ultrasound Screening for Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip in At-Risk Infants With Normal Physical Examinations. [Journal Article]Orthopedics. 2026 Sep-Oct; 49(5):e431-e436.O
- CONCLUSIONS: These findings support the continued utility of selective ultrasound screening as part of a risk-based DDH evaluation pathway, with the highest yield observed in female infants and those with multiple risk factors.

- Patient-level Value Analysis in Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction: A Practical Application Over a 2-year Episode of Care. [Journal Article]Orthopedics. 2026 Sep-Oct; 49(5):e408-e414.O
- CONCLUSIONS: PLVA quantified 2-year value and identified influential institutional factors in the context of primary ACLR. Increased costs of care did not achieve improved outcomes. This methodology should be further implemented and researched in orthopedics.

- Octogenarians Face Higher 90-day Medical Risk but Lower 1-year Revision Rates After Primary Total Knee Arthroplasty. [Journal Article]Orthopedics. 2026 Sep-Oct; 49(5):e415-e425.O
- CONCLUSIONS: Octogenarians experienced greater early medical morbidity but lower observed 1-year revision hazards than did younger patients. These findings support age-calibrated counseling emphasizing perioperative optimization in older patients while informing younger patients of their greater early revision risk. Because mortality was unavailable as a competing event, lower revision hazards in octogenarians should be interpreted cautiously and not assumed to reflect superior implant durability. Future studies incorporating competing-risk methodology, frailty measures, and patient-reported outcomes are needed.

- Bridging the Gender Pay Gap: Medicare Procedure Volume and Reimbursement Among Spine Surgeons. [Journal Article]Orthopedics. 2026 Sep-Oct; 49(5):e399-e407.O
- CONCLUSIONS: Between 2017-2022, male spine surgeons had higher total Medicare reimbursements and per-procedure reimbursements for lower and posterior spinal fusions, despite similar procedural volumes among surgeons. These differences remained even after statistical adjustment for procedural volume and calendar year. Future work incorporating additional clinical- and practice-level variables may clarify drivers of these differences.

- Assessing Electronic Health Record Use Burden Among Orthopedic Surgeons: A Single-Institution Study. [Journal Article]Orthopedics. 2026; 49(5):e391-e398.O
- CONCLUSIONS: Female sex and fewer practice years were associated with increased EHR use. Female orthopedic surgeons tended to have higher patient message volumes, whereas junior surgeons tended to have less team support, spending more time on orders and documentation. Given known factors contributing to burnout, these findings warrant further investigation into targeted interventions to improve physician EHR use.

- CONCLUSIONS: Preoperative GLP-1 receptor agonist therapy was associated with reduced postoperative SSI and wound complications following knee extensor mechanism repair. These findings suggest potential for perioperative risk modulation as GLP-1 use becomes increasingly prevalent in patients undergoing knee extensor mechanism repair.
