- Interpretable machine learning for hikikomori screening: The adaptive HRI-15. [Journal Article]PLoS One. 2026; 21(8):e0355595.Plos
- Hikikomori, or prolonged social withdrawal, is an issue of global relevance. The HRI-15 is a brief tool for its assessment. This study enhances its utility by adding clinical thresholds to identify risk and person-centered clinical profiles, and by developing a machine-learning(ML)-based computerized adaptive test (CAT) to enable rapid screening. Data from a national survey of Italian adolescents…

- Uncovering the determinants of high-risk age at childbirth in Bangladesh: A machine learning analysis of the BDHS 2022 data. [Journal Article]PLoS One. 2026; 21(8):e0356362.Plos
- Childbirth occurring at high-risk maternal ages (≤18 years or ≥40 years) remains an important public health concern in Bangladesh and is influenced by a range of socio-demographic and behavioral factors. We conducted a cross-sectional secondary analysis of 15,386 ever married women from the BDHS 2022 dataset. After cleaning and removing duplicates and missing values, data were split into training…

- A multi-phase reactions for organic carbon removal in bio-electrochemical reactors employing Fe2O3-synthesized nanoparticles. [Journal Article]PLoS One. 2026; 21(8):e0355332.Plos
- Two Poly(methyl methacrylate) reactors were fabricated, and the flow of synthetic Dissolved Organic Carbon (DOC) was maintained. Humic acid was used as the source of organic carbon, with a water pH of 7-8.5, TDS of 220-240 mg/L, and EC of 0.4-0.5 mS/cm. Iron nano-particles were synthesized via the sol-gel method and characterized by Energy-Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS), Dynamic Light Scattering (…

- Impressions and perceived barriers of implementing water-based foam and nitrogen foam swine depopulation methods at the farm level. [Journal Article]PLoS One. 2026; 21(8):e0354430.Plos
- Animal depopulation is a critical component of emergency planning across U.S. livestock industries. Class A water-based foam (WBF) and high-expansion nitrogen foam (N2F) have been researched to help provide the swine industry with alternative tools to perform depopulation at larger scales. At this time, there is little data on perceived advantages or barriers identified by individuals, such as op…

- High prevalence and associated factors of red blood cell folate deficiency among first-trimester pregnant women in a neural tube defect high-risk Region of Tigray, Northern Ethiopia. [Journal Article]PLoS One. 2026; 21(8):e0356720.Plos
- CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates that maternal RBC folate deficiency was present in almost all first-trimester pregnant women in Tigray, highlighting a substantial public health concern in a region with a high burden of neural tube defects. The finding that clinical deficiency crosses all demographic and dietary tiers indicates that individual-level dietary modification and sporadic supplementation are insufficient to protect maternal reserves. Safely addressing this structural micronutrient emergency and reducing the high burden of NTDs requires an immediate transition toward mandatory, large-scale food fortification of staple grains in Northern Ethiopia.

- Cocoa cultivation as an engine of rural development: Impact on the configuration of livelihoods strategies of rural households in Colombia. [Journal Article]PLoS One. 2026; 21(8):e0355387.Plos
- Rural conditions in Colombia have changed in recent years, and rural households have had to redesign their livelihood strategies (LS). Cocoa cultivation has accompanied this process of LS configuration, with a differentiated role in each household. This research analyzes the incidence of cocoa cultivation in the LS of rural households in the Colombian departments of Caquetá, Huila, Meta, and Sant…

- Quantifying the evolution of harmony and novelty in western classical music. [Historical Article]PLoS One. 2026; 21(8):e0356548.Plos
- Music is a complex socio-cultural construct that fascinates researchers across many fields. Understanding its historical development may inform questions of perception and cognition, and offer insight into cultural transmission, creativity, and innovation. Here we study musical features related to harmony and document how they evolved over 400 years in western classical music. We develop a varian…

- Pan-cancer profiles of mesothelin (MSLN) unveil diagnostic potential and therapeutic targetability of pancreatic adenocarcinoma. [Journal Article]PLoS One. 2026; 21(8):e0354334.Plos
- CONCLUSIONS: MSLN is a diagnosis and prognosis biomarker that is context dependent and has application in selected cancers, especially pancreatic adenocarcinoma. While Withaferin A shows promising in silico binding and stability against MSLN, predicted toxicity and pharmacokinetic limitations suggest the need for further optimization and experimental validation before therapeutic application.

- Gaze allocation and evaluations of dynamic smiles following angry versus neutral expressions. [Journal Article]PLoS One. 2026; 21(8):e0356283.Plos
- This study investigated how people perceive smiles that follow an angry versus a neutral expression by examining gaze patterns and subjective evaluations when presented with dynamic facial expressions. In an eye-tracking experiment, participants viewed morph movie stimuli in which facial expressions changed either from anger to a smile (anger-to-smile condition) or from a neutral expression to a …

- Bayesian model discovery for reverse-engineering biochemical networks from data. [Journal Article]PLoS One. 2026; 21(8):e0355545.Plos
- Reverse engineering gene regulatory networks from gene expression data is a challenging inference task. A related problem in computational systems biology is identification of signalling networks that perform particular functions, such as adaptation. Indeed, for many research questions, there is an ongoing need for efficient inference algorithms that can identify the simplest model, from among a …

- A multimodal analysis suggests partial IRF8/TLR7-associated myeloid transcriptional convergence between diabetic kidney disease and Parkinson's disease. [Journal Article]PLoS One. 2026; 21(8):e0356691.Plos
- CONCLUSIONS: DKD and PD show limited genome-wide overlap but partial convergence of myeloid- and microglia-enriched inflammatory signals associated with IRF8 and TLR7. These findings provide testable hypotheses rather than evidence of a conserved causal pathway or validated cross-disease treatment.

- A Darwinian model for the evolution of drug resistance to long-acting PrEP during an early HIV infection. [Journal Article]PLoS One. 2026; 21(8):e0355833.Plos
- Predicting the evolution of drug resistance remains a central challenge in HIV prevention and treatment. Evolutionary trade-offs, i.e., the fitness costs of resistance, shift as drug-selective pressure changes, a complexity amplified by fluctuating drug concentrations during long-acting prophylaxis. We develop a Darwinian evolutionary game theory model of early HIV infection under bimonthly pre-e…

- Hate speech detection in low-resource and informally written languages remains a significant challenge due to the lack of annotated corpora, orthographic variability, and complex code-mixing. Roman Urdu a non-standardized variant of Urdu written in the Latin script exemplifies these linguistic hurdles. In this paper, we propose LEXF-ATT-XLM, a novel hybrid deep learning architecture that synergiz…
