- Immunogenicity and safety of Institut Pasteur du Cambodge (IPC) and updated Thai Red Cross (UTRC) intradermal rabies vaccine regimens among healthy adults in India: A phase 4, open label, equivalence randomised controlled trial. [Journal Article]PLoS Med. 2026 Oct 29; 23(10):e1005079. [Online ahead of print]PM
- CONCLUSIONS: The IPC regimen did not meet the prespecified equivalence criterion compared to UTRC. All participants achieved RVNA titres ≥0.5 IU/ml indicative of seroprotection from day 14 till 1 year. Policy decisions regarding replacement of UTRC should consider these immunogenicity findings together with compliance, cost, and vaccine availability.

- Pancreatic cancer: The RAS paradigm shift. [Journal Article]PLoS Med. 2026 Oct 29; 23(10):e1005283. [Online ahead of print]PM
- Treatment approaches for pancreatic adenocarcinoma, an aggressive disease with poor prognosis, are evolving beyond cytotoxic chemotherapy. Recent advances in RAS targeting with small molecules are redefining therapeutic paradigms.

- Challenges and recommendations for implementation of oncology clinical practice guidelines in China. [Journal Article]PLoS Med. 2026 Oct; 23(10):e1005261.PM
- As China's cancer burden continues to rise and treatment becomes increasingly complex, clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) are crucial to standardising cancer care and supporting clinical decision-making. Over the past decades, China has made substantial progress in developing oncology CPGs, transitioning from expert consensus and international adaptation toward domestically led guideline product…

- Co-exposure to planned power outages and wildfire PM2.5 and acute healthcare utilization in California: A time-stratified case-crossover study. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: PSPS events may increase risk of respiratory events requiring acute care utilization, especially when they co-occur with wildfire PM2.5.

- Cost-effectiveness of recommended interventions for managing low back pain: A systematic review. [Systematic Review]
- CONCLUSIONS: Non-pharmacological, non-surgical interventions that include education, psychological support, acupuncture and exercise seem to be cost-effective for managing LBP, compared to usual care. Improved access to and implementation of these effective treatments is urgently needed so more people can benefit from them in routine care.

- Breast cancer treatment: When less is more. [Editorial]PLoS Med. 2026 Oct 26; 23(10):e1005284. [Online ahead of print]PM
- Breast cancer treatment using systemic therapies has often focussed on remission and survival, but can cause severe side effects that negatively impact patient quality of life and function, sometimes with limited clinical benefit. In the era of precision oncology, one of the greatest opportunities may not be in identifying more patients for treatment, but rather in identifying those who can safel…

- Outcomes of home-based versus facility-based care for mild diphtheria during a large epidemic in Kano State, Nigeria: A retrospective matched cohort study. [Journal Article]PLoS Med. 2026 Oct 26; 23(10):e1005097. [Online ahead of print]PM
- CONCLUSIONS: Vaccination and early treatment were associated with survival; care setting was not clearly associated. When supported by clinical triage and structured follow-up, decentralised care may be an option to manage mild cases during diphtheria epidemics in settings with constrained hospital capacity.

- Burden of bacterial antimicrobial resistance associated with modifiable human antibiotic consumption: An observational study. [Journal Article]PLoS Med. 2026 Oct; 23(10):e1005140.PM
- CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest near-term achievable reductions in AMR-attributable deaths may be modest relative to the persisting burden of bacterial disease mortality. These estimates should inform assessments of the potential benefits and harms of restrictive versus permissive antibiotic use paradigms in epidemiologically distinct settings.

- Cardiac screening in the young for the detection of cardiovascular disease and prevention of sudden cardiac death. [Journal Article]
- Sudden cardiac death in the young is often due to silent inherited cardiac conditions. Although evidence increasingly supports cardiac screening as a preventative strategy, policies and frameworks differ globally. Structured screening frameworks that utilise AI-enabled technologies show great potential for enhancing disease detection and risk prediction.

- How do we monitor doxy-PEP impact and when should we consider revisiting guidelines? [Review]
- The 2026 WHO guidelines recommending doxycycline post-exposure prophylaxis (doxy-PEP) represent the first global antibiotic prophylaxis recommendation for bacterial sexually transmitted infections (STIs), with provisions for antimicrobial resistance (AMR) monitoring.Doxy-PEP should be governed as an adaptive intervention subject to periodic, transparent review, but establishing decision rules fac…

- Guidance for defining outcomes in clinical trials. [Journal Article]PLoS Med. 2026 Oct; 23(10):e1005275.PM
- CONCLUSIONS: Trialists and sponsors could use this framework and guidance to define outcomes in trial registrations, protocols, and results reports. When all six elements are defined, readers can better determine whether reported outcomes were prespecified and whether different trials assessed the same outcomes.

- Analysis of the impact of naturally-acquired immunity on Shigella vaccine performance to inform clinical trials: A simulation-based modeling study. [Journal Article]PLoS Med. 2026 Oct; 23(10):e1004878.PM
- CONCLUSIONS: The observed VE in Shigella vaccine trials is likely to underestimate true VE, though the magnitude of underestimation described here is conditional on the simulation's inputs and assumptions. Careful trial design is needed to minimize this underestimation.

- Impact of violence on HIV outcomes among female sex workers: A global systematic review and meta-analysis. [Systematic Review]
- CONCLUSIONS: Experiencing violence is associated with greater odds of prevalent HIV infections, and poorer HIV treatment outcomes among FSWs. HIV interventions for FSWs must address violence as a structural determinant of HIV.

- Seeing the invisible: Reorienting cardiovascular risk prediction across the disease trajectory. [Journal Article]
- Current risk equations miss many cardiovascular events in people classified as low risk. Prediction is simultaneously advancing on two axes: broadening predictors toward molecular omics, and expanding outcomes toward earlier subclinical atherosclerosis and later heart failure.
