- Optimization of tick identification via MALDI-TOF MS for implementation in routine diagnostics. [Journal Article]
- Ticks are important vectors of pathogens with substantial medical and veterinary relevance, a threat that may be further increased with the spread of invasive tick species. Reliable tick identification is relevant for accurate diagnostic elucidation of transmission pathways, and the development of targeted surveillance strategies and risk assessments. A standardized, rapid, and cost-effective ide…

- Molecular investigation of tick-borne pathogens in Ixodes ricinus feeding on lizards in the Central Pyrenees, Spain. [Journal Article]
- Ixodes ricinus is the most widespread tick species in Europe, parasitizing a broad range of vertebrate hosts, including reptiles. However, the role of lizards in the ecology of tick-borne pathogens remains poorly understood. This study investigated tick infestation levels and the occurrence of tick-borne pathogens in I. ricinus feeding on European common lizards (Zootoca vivipara louislantzi) in …

- Community Pattern of Ectoparasite and Endoparasite Fauna of Urban-Dwelling Anurans in the Southwestern Coast of Sarawak, Borneo Island, Malaysia. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: These results offer a baseline overview of parasite fauna in urban anurans, identifying rainfall and temperature as key environmental drivers of infection and community composition and highlighting zoonotic risks that warrant ongoing public surveillance.

- Stage-specific proteomic and phosphoproteomic remodeling in Theileria annulata. [Journal Article]
- Theileria annulata, an apicomplexan parasite, causes lymphoproliferative disease in cattle and threatens the bovine industry in tropical and subtropical regions. To clarify life-cycle mechanisms and parasite-host interactions, we conducted high-resolution Orbitrap proteomic and phosphoproteomic analyses of the schizont and piroplasm stages. In total, we confidently identified and quantified 2,093…

- Molecular, parasitological and clinical diagnosis of female genital schistosomiasis: A diagnostic yield and comparative accuracy study using latent class analysis. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: The LCA model confirmed that a negative result from traditional tools cannot rule out infection necessitating the use of complementary diagnostic tools. However, clinicians should interpret positive PCR outcomes with care, as molecular detection cannot distinguish between active infection, recent parasite exposure, or residual DNA from past infections.

- Does glochidia infestation of the freshwater pearl mussel (Margaritifera margaritifera) affect foraging behavior and growth in brown trout (Salmo trutta)? [Journal Article]
- Fish serve as hosts to a wide range of parasites, which can affect them in many ways, including their survival, growth, and foraging behavior. The highly threatened unionid mussels have an ectoparasitic life stage on the gills, skin, or fins of fish. Here, we compared prey handling time and growth between groups of brown trout (Salmo trutta) that were infested and non-infested with glochidia larv…

- Modelling the Transmission Dynamics and Risk of Ovine Cystic Echinococcosis in Argentina Using the CEST Model (Cystic Echinococcosis Stochastic Transmission Model). [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: Enhancing CE control requires additional measures, including a deeper understanding of factors contributing to disease persistence despite current control efforts. The CEST model can be extended to simulate additional interventions, making it a valuable tool for policymakers and stakeholders in planning CE control efforts beyond the Sustainable Development Goals.

- Synthesis and Evaluation of Clove Oil-Loaded Solid Lipid Nanoparticles on Echinococcus granulosus Protoscoleces. [Journal Article]
- The most prevalent approach during treatment of cystic echinococcosis (CE) relies on surgical cyst removal and long-term chemotherapy with benzimidazoles. However, cyst rupture may lead to anaphylaxis or secondary cysts and adverse effects. This study is aimed at synthesizing and evaluating the potential of clove oil-loaded solid lipid nanoparticles (ClO-SLNs) against Echinococcus granulosus prot…

- The Burden and Associated Factors of Intestinal Parasitic Infection Among Prisoners in Ethiopia: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis. [Review]
- CONCLUSIONS: In Ethiopia, intestinal parasitic infections are prevalent among prisoners. The common parasitic infections were E. histolytica/dispar and E. histolytica/dispar + H. worms. Among prisoners, intestinal parasitic infection is associated with handwashing before a meal, handwashing after toilet, the status of hand hygiene, and untrimmed fingernails.

- Variation and Demographic Determinants of Malaria Infection in Selected Villages of Bibugn Woreda, Amhara, Ethiopia. [Journal Article]
- Malaria remains a major public health problem in Ethiopia, with heterogeneous transmission across ecological and demographic settings. This study assessed variation and demographic determinants of malaria infection in selected villages of Bibugn woreda, Amhara, Ethiopia. A community-based cross-sectional survey was conducted from October to December 2016 and March to April 2017 in Ameba Amarsa, D…

- Effects of Varroa destructor on Apis mellifera capensis Drone Sperm Quality Characteristics and Colony Demographics. [Journal Article]
- Varroa destructor (V. destructor) threatens honeybee colonies and negatively affects drone weight and survival. Therefore, this mite species poses a risk to the reproductive potential of drones, and subsequently colony health and performance. However, studies on the impact of V. destructor infestation on sperm characteristics are limited, and results appear to be inconclusive. This study aimed to…

- Effects of Astragaloside IV Combined With Metronidazole on Cyst Shedding and Mucosal Immune and Inflammatory Responses in a Murine Model of Giardiasis. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: AGS administration was associated with a reduced Giardia cyst burden at the prespecified 24-h post-treatment endpoint, restoration of mucosal immune responses, attenuation of inflammatory signaling, and improved biochemical profiles in experimentally infected mice. These findings suggest that AGS may function as an immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory adjunct, potentially contributing to host-mediated parasite load reduction and improved treatment outcomes when combined with METR. However, additional antiparasitic mechanisms and formal pharmacodynamic synergistic interactions were not demonstrated in this study and require further investigation through dedicated in vitro and mechanistic analyses.

- National Distribution of Bisexual and Parthenogenetic Haemaphysalis longicornis of Japan, and a Real-Time PCR-Based Method to Distinguish the Two Reproductive Groups. [Journal Article]
- The Asian longhorned tick, Haemaphysalis longicornis, is a well-known vector of several zoonoses including SFTS and Japanese spotted fever. This species consists of two different reproductive forms, bisexual and parthenogenetic, which are suggested to have differential roles in disease transmission. In Japan, the distributions of these forms have been suspected from sex bias in each population. M…
