- Intermittent Fasting as a Therapeutic Strategy in Alzheimer's Disease: Understanding of Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor Modulation. [Review]Physiol Behav. 2026 Oct 08; :115522. [Online ahead of print]PB
- Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease with amyloid-beta (Aβ) plaques, tau tangles, neuroinflammation, and oxidative stress, and it causes cognitive impairment and neuronal loss. The pharmacological treatment is of limited effectiveness, therefore the interest in novel approaches such as intermittent fasting (IF). IF, a nutritional regimen of periodic caloric restrict…

- Distinct behavioral and electrophysiological correlates of sleep disturbance during verbal and spatial working memory tasks. [Journal Article]Physiol Behav. 2026 Oct 07; :115535. [Online ahead of print]PB
- Associations between sleep disturbance and working memory (WM) vary across tasks and outcome measures. This study examined behavioral and electrophysiological correlates of subjective sleep disturbance during verbal working memory (VWM) and spatial working memory (SWM) in university students. Sixty-one participants were classified using Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) scores into a sleep di…

- Exploring the Reconfiguration Effects of Physical Fatigue on the Gradient Space of Brain Function Based on EEG. [Journal Article]Physiol Behav. 2026 Oct 07; :115519. [Online ahead of print]PB
- CONCLUSIONS: Physical fatigue induces frequency-, region-, component-, and method-specific reorganization of the low-dimensional structure of scalp-level EEG functional connectivity. PCA was particularly sensitive to spatially differentiated gradient changes, while LE and DM captured complementary aspects of fatigue-related reorganization. The association between central beta-band ΔG1 and exercise duration further suggests potential behavioral relevance of gradient.

- The effect of positive emotions on psychophysiological recovery and performance in athletes - investigating the undoing-hypothesis. [Journal Article]Physiol Behav. 2026 Oct 07; :115536. [Online ahead of print]PB
- Athletes have to cope with psychosocial and physiological stressors, requiring recovery to ensure subsequent performance. According to the undoing-hypothesis, positive emotions (PE) may enhance psychophysiological recovery. The present two studies investigated the undoing hypothesis and its benefits for athletes' cognitive (Study 1; n = 60) and motor (Study 2; n = 30) performance. After a combine…

- Central GHSR inverse agonism by a LEAP2 analog regulates thermometabolic and behavioral responses via catecholamine signaling. [Journal Article]Physiol Behav. 2026 Oct 06; :115521. [Online ahead of print]PB
- CONCLUSIONS: LEAP2 analog regulates specific behavioral and thermometabolic responses through neurobiological mechanisms involving catecholaminergic pathways and dopamine receptors, highlighting central GHSR as a potential pharmacological target for neuroendocrine defense mechanisms.

- Environmental enrichment differentially suppresses anxiety-related behaviors, reduces passive avoidance learning, and upregulates hippocampal brain-derived neurotrophic factor expression in high- and low-avoidance Hatano rats. [Journal Article]Physiol Behav. 2026 Oct 06; :115530. [Online ahead of print]PB
- Anxiety disorder risk is influenced by both adverse environmental factors and genetic background. We previously described high-avoidance animal (HAA) and low-avoidance animal (LAA) strains of male Hatano rats that may provide robust models for assessing interactions between genetic background and environment driving anxiety disorder pathogenesis. We examined the potential of environmental enrichm…

- Functional involvement of HMGB1-related neuroinflammation in depression and its modulation by intermittent theta-burst stimulation(iTBS). [Journal Article]Physiol Behav. 2026 Oct 06; :115531. [Online ahead of print]PB
- CONCLUSIONS: HMGB1 is functionally involved in depression, and the therapeutic effects of iTBS are associated with suppression of HMGB1-related neuroinflammatory signaling. These findings suggest that HMGB1 may have potential as a biomarker for monitoring the biological effects of iTBS and may provide a basis for further investigation of HMGB1 in treatment response.

- Disruptions along the brain-gut-microbiota axis significantly contribute to Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathogenesis. This study evaluated the therapeutic potential of a multi-strain probiotic mixture in mitigating cognitive decline, neuroinflammation, and amyloid pathology in an AD rat model. In the present study, after induction of AD in rats by oral administration of AlCl3 (50 mg/kg) for 28 days,…

- Parkinson's disease (PD) is a chronic neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNpc) and reduced striatal dopamine concentrations. In addition to its characteristic motor manifestations, PD is associated with nonmotor complications, including cardiovascular autonomic dysfunction, orthostatic and postprandial hypotension, a…

- CONCLUSIONS: Sleeve gastrectomy is associated with reduced motivational drive for high-fat sweet foods, while hedonic appreciation remains stable. These findings suggest that post-surgical metabolic adaptations may improve the control of food intake, in part by modulating implicit motivation for high-fat sweet foods.

- CONCLUSIONS: The present study found no statistical effect on appetite following 12-weeks of RE in older adult males. RE should continue to be undertaken throughout the life course and be included as part of physical activity recommendations for optimal health in old age due to the many physical, mental health and functional benefits.

- Methamphetamine addiction leads to profound cognitive and emotional impairments through persistent neuroinflammatory and neurodegenerative processes. Recent advances suggest that platelet-derived exosomes possess the potential to promote neurorepair and functional recovery. However, the therapeutic efficacy of exosomes may be influenced by time-of-day administration, given that neural plasticity,…
