- Adverse reactions to psychedelics in naturalistic settings are associated with current psychopathology and well-being: A correlational study. [Journal Article]Psychiatry Res. 2026 Oct 08; 367:117516. [Online ahead of print]PR
- This study examines acute and delayed adverse reactions reported in naturalistic psychedelic use, focusing on their associations with substance-use patterns, contextual variables, and user motivations. Using an online survey incorporating the Psychedelic Use Scale, data were collected from a large naturalistic sample (N = 1022) to analyze patterns of self-reported adverse reactions. Acute adverse…

- Abnormal sleep duration and sarcopenia are jointly associated with adverse depressive trajectories in adults aged ≥45: Evidence from a longitudinal cohort study. [Journal Article]Psychiatry Res. 2026 Oct 05; 367:117489. [Online ahead of print]PR
- Abnormal sleep duration (ASD) and sarcopenia are highly prevalent. However, their combined effects on dynamic depressive trajectories remain unclear. This study aimed to explore the associations of coexisting ASD and sarcopenia with first-onset depressive symptoms and depressive symptom trajectories in adults aged ≥45 years. Data were derived from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Stud…

- Group cognitive behavioral therapy for individuals on the early psychosis spectrum: a systematic review and a meta-analysis. [Review]Psychiatry Res. 2026 Oct 06; 367:117502. [Online ahead of print]PR
- CONCLUSIONS: GCBTp demonstrates meaningful efficacy in early psychosis, with small to medium effects for positive and overall symptoms, as well as well-being and self-esteem. GCBTp appears to consistently improve negative symptoms. More well-powered RCTs are needed.

- Cumulative internet use, depression, and incident dementia in the United States, 2002-2021: Mediation analysis and population health projection. [Journal Article]Psychiatry Res. 2026 Sep 29; 367:117483. [Online ahead of print]PR
- CONCLUSIONS: In US middle-aged and older adults, more frequent Internet use is associated with a lower dementia hazard, while mediation analyses suggested a modest potential role for depressive symptoms. These findings highlight digital engagement as a target for healthy cognitive aging, while underscoring the need for causal and intervention research.

- Somatic burden versus silent toxicity: Distinct longitudinal pathways linking gastric and hepatic diseases to depression. [Journal Article]Psychiatry Res. 2026 Sep 30; 367:117481. [Online ahead of print]PR
- CONCLUSIONS: Gastric and hepatic diseases showed differential longitudinal associations with depressive symptoms. Stomach disease-associated depression was largely attenuated by somatic burden, whereas the liver-depression association persisted after accounting for measured physical pain and sleep disturbance. These findings suggest potentially distinct pathways, though causality cannot be established and the association was not explained by measured pain and sleep duration in this study; unmeasured somatic symptoms may still contribute. Clinicians should consider proactive depression screening in patients with liver disease even when physical symptoms appear mild.

- Risk of schizophrenia in patients previously diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder: a systematic review. [Review]Psychiatry Res. 2026 Oct 05; 367:117486. [Online ahead of print]PR
- This systematic review aimed to synthesize longitudinal evidence on the risk of developing schizophrenia (SCZ) among individuals previously diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).

- Psychological and psychosocial interventions for people with schizophrenia spectrum disorders and smoking addiction: A systematic review and pairwise meta-analysis. [Journal Article]Psychiatry Res. 2026 Oct 06; 367:117492. [Online ahead of print]PR
- This systematic review and pairwise meta-analysis examined the efficacy of psychological and psychosocial smoking cessation interventions in individuals with schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD). Tobacco use is highly prevalent in this population and negatively affects both physical and mental health, potentially interfering with treatment outcomes. A comprehensive search of electronic database…

- Psychosocial factors in the association between somatic discomfort and suicidality across adulthood: A population-based mediation analysis. [Journal Article]Psychiatry Res. 2026 Sep 29; 367:117477. [Online ahead of print]PR
- CONCLUSIONS: Depressive disorder showed the most consistent statistical indirect association, with loneliness and social isolation additionally evident in later life. These cross-sectional findings support age-sensitive assessment but do not establish temporal or causal mediation.

- Plasma antioxidant enzyme imbalance in childhood- and adolescent-onset schizophrenia: clinical correlates and diagnostic utility. [Journal Article]Psychiatry Res. 2026 Oct 05; 367:117493. [Online ahead of print]PR
- Chronic oxidative stress (OS) is strongly implicated in the pathobiology of adult-onset schizophrenia, while contributions to childhood- and adolescent-onset schizophrenia (CAOS) have not been extensively investigated. Here we examined abnormalities in peripheral OS markers and associations with symptoms in a large CAOS cohort. Total superoxide dismutase (T-SOD), Mn-SOD, CuZn-SOD, glutathione per…

- Plasma interleukin-6 levels and treatment responses to antipsychotics in schizophrenia: Focus on clozapine treatment. [Journal Article]Psychiatry Res. 2026 Oct 05; 367:117487. [Online ahead of print]PR
- Neuroinflammation is a key pathophysiological mechanism underlying treatment-resistant schizophrenia (TRS). Interleukin (IL)-6 is a trait-related biomarker that exhibits consistently elevated levels in schizophrenia. However, studies focusing on TRS and examining the associations of clozapine treatment with inflammatory marker and clinical characteristics remain limited. Therefore, this multicent…

- Expanding the toolbox of interventions for cannabis use disorder in individuals with first-episode psychosis: A pilot randomized controlled trial of iCanChange (iCC), a novel app-based psychological intervention. [Journal Article]Psychiatry Res. 2026 Sep 28; 367:117476. [Online ahead of print]PR
- Delivering face-to-face psychological interventions for cannabis use disorder (CUD) in early intervention services (EIS) for psychosis is often limited by structural barriers. App-based interventions may help overcome these limitations, though studies in non-psychosis populations report low engagement and retention. This study evaluated the feasibility of conducting an efficacy randomized control…

- Multidimensional integrative analyses identify CA4 as a potential schizophrenia driver gene. [Journal Article]Psychiatry Res. 2026 Sep 30; 367:117484. [Online ahead of print]PR
- Gene expression studies have identified multiple dysregulated genes in brains of schizophrenia cases compared with controls. However, many dysregulated genes are not replicated or confirmed in independent cohorts and it remains a major challenge to identify genes whose altered expression have a causal role in schizophrenia. Here we conducted differential expression analysis in three large-scale i…

- Understanding short-term risk factors for suicidal ideation (SI) and non-fatal suicide attempts (NFSAs) in at-risk populations is essential for suicide prevention initiatives. The prospective associations between previously identified near-term risk factors for suicidal behavior and SI and NFSAs were examined in a sample of adults with recent suicidal ideation (N = 423; 72.3% female) who complete…

- The paradox of experience: firearm access, beliefs about risk, and storage behaviors among those exposed to firearm suicide. [Journal Article]Psychiatry Res. 2026 Dec; 366:117472.PR
- CONCLUSIONS: Secure firearm storage is associated with knowing someone who died by firearm suicide. Firearm owners who keep at least one firearm unlocked and loaded were more likely to know someone who died by firearm suicide. Interventions beyond awareness of knowing someone who died by firearm suicide may be critical to promoting safer practices.
