- Is there a natural boundary for formal thought disorder? Evidence from taxometric analysis. [Multicenter Study]Psychol Med. 2026 Oct 26; 56:e347.PM
- CONCLUSIONS: FTD exists in a continuous dimensional structure extending into healthy populations. Each dimension is measurable in healthy individuals, but multi-dimensional convergence at clinical thresholds (i.e. disorder with functional impairment) appears specific to patients. This suggests that common vulnerability factors increase the likelihood of elevations across multiple but substantially independent dimensions of FTD. As a hypothesis requiring prospective validation, clinical risk of psychosis may depend on the coalescence rather than single-dimensional severity of FTD subconstructs.

- Longitudinal changes in cognitive biases mediate the association between stress exposure and psychotic-like experiences: Findings from a general population study. [Journal Article]Psychol Med. 2026 Oct 26; 56:e348.PM
- CONCLUSIONS: Longitudinal changes in cognitive biases might represent an indirect pathway to the association between stress exposure and increases in PLEs. These findings highlight cognitive biases as potential targets for preventive interventions.

- Distinct profiles of white matter diffusivity in obesity and bipolar disorders: An ENIGMA bipolar disorders study in 2166 individuals. [Journal Article]Psychol Med. 2026 Oct 23; 56:e342.PM
- CONCLUSIONS: We found FA and MD are weakly associated, providing complementary information, and there are unique associations between specific diffusivity measures and clinical predictors. Treatment with antiepileptics may inflate the statistical effects of BD on white matter. By using all diffusivity measures and accounting for additional clinical factors, we can gain new insights into brain correlates of severe mental illness.

- Inherited and early-life vulnerability in functional neurological disorder and functional somatic symptoms: A retrospective cohort and case-control study from a large electronic health record database. [Journal Article]Psychol Med. 2026 Oct 22; 56:e338.PM
- CONCLUSIONS: Inherited and early-life biological vulnerabilities were more common in FND and functional somatic symptom cohorts. Their prevalence differed among phenotypes. Our findings suggest that developmental variation in brain-body systems may influence the risk and clinical expression of functional symptoms.

- Depression and reward function in adolescence and the potential of behavioral activation as a treatment: a narrative review. [Review]Psychol Med. 2026 Oct 22; 56:e346.PM
- Depression in adolescence is associated with poorer outcomes than adult-onset depression. While effective treatment can prevent difficulties from persisting into adulthood, current interventions for adolescent depression are often limited in effectiveness, likely because they fail to address the specific mechanisms underlying depression during this developmental stage. Effective, practical, and t…

- Semaglutide modulates explore/exploit decision-making in major depressive disorder: A randomized clinical trial. [Randomized Controlled Trial]Psychol Med. 2026 Oct 21; 56:e344.PM
- CONCLUSIONS: Treatment with semaglutide modulated explore/exploit behaviors in patients with MDD. These results highlight the role of metabolic mechanisms in decision-making processes in MDD and expand knowledge of the potential neuropsychiatric effects of GLP-1RAs.

- Transdiagnostic factors differentially shape choices and decision times in social evaluative learning. [Journal Article]Psychol Med. 2026 Oct 21; 56:e343.PM
- CONCLUSIONS: These results demonstrate how transdiagnostic trait dimensions shape social learning mechanisms through specific behavioral and computational processes.

- Structural network alterations and peripheral immune-inflammatory dysregulation define distinct subtypes of major depressive disorder with prognostic implications. [Journal Article]Psychol Med. 2026 Oct 19; 56:e340.PM
- CONCLUSIONS: This study supports a bidirectional immune-brain framework in MDD and suggests that structure-derived subtypes classify different immune signaling heterogeneity, which may provide a biologically informed basis for stratification and prognosis in MDD.

- Neural correlates of self-directed violence: A large-sample resting-state fMRI study from UK Biobank. [Journal Article]Psychol Med. 2026 Oct 19; 56:e332.PM
- CONCLUSIONS: This large-sample rs-fMRI study highlights distinct FC alterations associated with different dimensions of self-harm. Results implicated that the limbic and reward circuits appear particularly relevant in differentiating SA from NSSDV and in capturing variations tied to SDV frequency and recency. These insights advance our understanding of suicidal behaviors' neurobiological underpinnings and may inform targeted risk stratification.

- Neural dysfunction underlying divergent thinking and its shared mechanisms with protracted withdrawal symptoms in heroin use disorder. [Journal Article]Psychol Med. 2026 Oct 19; 56:e333.PM
- CONCLUSIONS: These findings reveal a sustained compensatory pathological mechanism and an imbalance in neural resource allocation during complex cognition in HUD individuals. The identified signatures of cortical activity by fNIRS offer reliable biomarkers for the rapid detection of both higher-order cognitive deficits and withdrawal symptoms, and further offer precise cortical targets for their integrated intervention.

- 'What doesn't kill you doesn't always make you stronger': The impact of repeated exposure to adverse life events on mental health. [Journal Article]Psychol Med. 2026 Oct 19; 56:e336.PM
- CONCLUSIONS: In a population-based sample over two decades we found event-specific sensitisation and habituation in response to repeated adverse life events. Both effects appeared to 'plateau' after the second event. Our findings provide no consistent support for a single universal model of stress-response, indicating that how individuals respond psychologically to adversity is more nuanced and may depend on contextual factors such as individual meaning, resilience, or resources.

- Greater proximity to greenspace is associated with fewer depressive symptoms among urban middle-aged adults. [Journal Article]Psychol Med. 2026 Oct 19; 56:e337.PM
- CONCLUSIONS: Residential greenspace is associated with fewer depressive symptoms and ranks prominently among the most influential factors within the examined health-related variables. The potential beneficial association with greenspace appears to be stronger with closer proximity to residential areas.

- Alcohol reinforcers attenuate goal-directed control in individuals with and without alcohol use disorder. [Journal Article]Psychol Med. 2026 Oct 19; 56:e339.PM
- CONCLUSIONS: These findings do not support a generalized deficit in goal-directed control in AUD. Instead, goal-directed control appears selectively attenuated in alcohol-related contexts across groups, potentially reflecting reinforcement-history-dependent reductions in contingency-sensitive responding. Alcohol-specific reductions in goal-directed control may emerge early in alcohol use, underscoring the importance of reinforcer context.

- Mapping emotional contagion: directional predictive patterns of depressive symptoms among middle-aged and older Chinese couples. [Journal Article]Psychol Med. 2026 Oct 19; 56:e335.PM
- CONCLUSIONS: Findings indicate bidirectional associations of depressive symptoms with significant gender disparities in symptom dynamics among middle-aged and older couples, highlighting the necessity for gender-sensitive, relationship-focused research and interventions. Dyadic network analysis provides new insights into depression dynamics, advocating approaches addressing relational factors with individual symptoms in mental health strategies for China's aging population.
