  • Childhood Infectious Encephalitis: An Overview of Clinical Features, Investigations, Treatment, and Recent Patents. [Review]
Recent Pat Inflamm Allergy Drug Discov. 2020; 14(2):156-165.Au CC, Hon KL, … Torres ARRP
  • CONCLUSIONS: Viral encephalitis is the most common cause of acute infectious encephalitis in children and is associated with significant morbidity. Recent advances in understanding the genetic basis and immunological correlation of infectious encephalitis may improve treatment. Third-tier diagnostic tests may be incorporated into clinical practice. Treatment is targeted at the infectious process but remains mostly supportive. However, specific antimicrobial agents and vaccines development is ongoing.
  • Nummular Eczema: An Updated Review. [Review]
Recent Pat Inflamm Allergy Drug Discov. 2020; 14(2):146-155.Leung AKC, Lam JM, … Hon KLRP
  • CONCLUSIONS: With proper treatment, nummular eczema can be cleared over a few weeks, although the course can be chronic and characterized by relapses and remissions. Moisturizing of the skin and avoidance of identifiable exacerbating factors, such as hot water baths and harsh soaps may reduce the frequency of recurrence. Diseases that present with annular lesions may mimic nummular eczema and the differential diagnosis is broad. As such, physicians must be familiar with this condition so that an accurate diagnosis can be made, and appropriate treatment initiated.
  • Childhood Alopecia Areata: An Overview of Treatment and Recent Patents. [Review]
Recent Pat Inflamm Allergy Drug Discov. 2020; 14(2):117-132.Hon KL, Luk DCK, … Loo SKFRP
  • CONCLUSIONS: None of the established therapeutic options are curative. However, newer treatment modalities, including excimer laser, interleukin-31 antibodies and biologics, are evolving so that there may be significant advances in treatment in the near future. AA can be psychosocially devastating. It is important to assess the quality of life, degree of anxiety, social phobia and mood of the patients and their families. Psychological support is imperative for those who are adversely affected psychosocially.
  • Human Ascariasis: An Updated Review. [Review]
Recent Pat Inflamm Allergy Drug Discov. 2020; 14(2):133-145.Leung AKC, Leung AAM, … Hon KLRP
  • CONCLUSIONS: The average cure rate with anthelminthic treatment is over 95%. Unfortunately, most treated patients in endemic areas become re-infected within months. Health education, personal hygiene, improved sanitary conditions, proper disposal of human excreta, and discontinuing the use of human fecal matter as a fertilizer are effective long-term preventive measures. Targeting deworming treatment and mass anthelminthic treatment should be considered in regions where A. lumbricoides is prevalent.
  • Scenario of the Treatment of Arthritis with Natural Products. [Review]
Recent Pat Inflamm Allergy Drug Discov. 2020; 14(2):95-105.Gallotti FCM, Serafini MR, Thomazzi SMRP
  • CONCLUSIONS: The analysis of patents made it possible to characterize the natural products used in the treatment of arthritis, with emphasis on botanical extracts (71%), as a single component, as well as in association with other botanical extracts, isolated compounds and minerals.
  • Mesenchymal Stem Cell-Mediated Immuno-Modulatory and Anti- Inflammatory Mechanisms in Immune and Allergic Disorders. [Review]
Recent Pat Inflamm Allergy Drug Discov. 2020; 14(1):3-14.Gugjoo MB, Hussain S, … Dhama KRP
  • CONCLUSIONS: MSCs have been well-isolated, cultured and characterized from numerous tissues of the body. The majority of the studies have shown MSCs as immuno-compromised with immunomodulatory and / or anti-inflammatory properties except some of the latest studies that have failed to achieve the desired results and thus, demand further research. Further research is required in the area to translate the results into clinical application.
  • Chitinases: Therapeutic Scaffolds for Allergy and Inflammation. [Review]
Recent Pat Inflamm Allergy Drug Discov. 2020; 14(1):46-57.Madan K, Madan M, … Paliwal SRP
  • CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, chitinases can be used as potential biomarkers in prognosis and diagnosis of several inflammatory diseases and allergies and the design of novel chitinase inhibitors may act as key and rational scaffolds in designing some novel therapeutic agents in the treatment of variety of inflammatory diseases.
  • Tinea Capitis: An Updated Review. [Review]
Recent Pat Inflamm Allergy Drug Discov. 2020; 14(1):58-68.Leung AKC, Hon KL, … Lam JMRP
  • CONCLUSIONS: Tinea capitis requires systemic antifungal treatment. Although topical antifungal therapies have minimal adverse events, topical antifungal agents alone are not recommended for the treatment of tinea capitis because these agents do not penetrate the root of the hair follicles deep within the dermis. Topical antifungal therapy, however, can be used to reduce transmission of spores and can be used as adjuvant therapy to systemic antifungals. Combined therapy with topical and oral antifungals may increase the cure rate.
  • Recent Patents and Discovery of Anti-inflammatory Agents from Marine Source. [Review]
Recent Pat Inflamm Allergy Drug Discov. 2019; 13(2):105-114.Kapoor S, Nailwal N, … Barve KRP
  • CONCLUSIONS: The findings reveal that marine organisms could be a promising source of novel antiinflammatory agents. However, further investigations are suggested for the isolation and identification of bioactive, exploring the mechanism of action and evaluating the efficacy in various inflammatory conditions.
  • Effects of Flavonoids and Its Derivatives on Immune Cell Responses. [Review]
Recent Pat Inflamm Allergy Drug Discov. 2019; 13(2):84-104.Martínez G, Mijares MR, De Sanctis JBRP
  • CONCLUSIONS: The most potent flavonoids in inflammation that modify immune responses are apigenin, quercetin and Epigallocatechin-3-Gallate (EGCG) although, other compounds are still under study and cannot be excluded. The most relevant patents concerning the use of flavones and other polyphenols were revised. A promising future of these compounds in different therapies is discussed.
  • Onychomycosis: An Updated Review. [Review]
Recent Pat Inflamm Allergy Drug Discov. 2020; 14(1):32-45.Leung AKC, Lam JM, … Wong AHCRP
  • CONCLUSIONS: Oral antifungal therapies are effective, but significant adverse effects limit their use. Although topical antifungal therapies have minimal adverse events, they are less effective than oral antifungal therapies, due to poor nail penetration. Therefore, there is a need for exploring more effective and/or alternative treatment modalities for the treatment of onychomycosis which are safer and more effective.
