- The clinical impact of 131-iodine whole-body scintigraphy following 131-iodine therapy of thyroid cancer. [Journal Article]Scand J Clin Lab Invest. 2026; 86(6):694-701.SJ
- The incidence of thyroid cancer has increased globally and in Denmark. Following total thyroidectomy, patients at intermediate or high risk undergo radioactive iodine (RAI) therapy with [131]I to ablate residual thyroid tissue and treat potential metastases. European and American guidelines recommend post-treatment whole-body scintigraphy (WBS) 2-10 days after RAI to supply information on disease…

- Agreement between lunar densitometers in the capital region of Denmark-a phantom study. [Journal Article]Scand J Clin Lab Invest. 2026 Sep 25; :1-8. [Online ahead of print]SJ
- In clinical practice, patient follow-up requires scans to be performed on the same densitometer to ensure comparability. This study evaluated the agreement and equivalence between nine Lunar iDXA and four Lunar Prodigy scanners, assessing their interchangeability for longitudinal spine BMD monitoring. The manufacturer's encapsulated spine phantom was scanned 15 times on each of nine iDXA and four…

- Long-term analytical drift of serum creatinine and its association with CKD staging consistency based on eGFR: a retrospective study. [Journal Article]Scand J Clin Lab Invest. 2026; 86(6):593-605.SJ
- To evaluate whether long-term IQC-derived analytical variability of serum creatinine (SCr), even within allowable limits, is associated with estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR)-based chronic kidney disease (CKD) staging consistency and stage reclassification. This single-center retrospective study included 4,215 patients with stable kidney function and 10,481 SCr records from 2022-2024. D…

- Fucosylated α-1-acid glycoprotein as a noninvasive fibrosis marker in chronic viral hepatitis. [Journal Article]Scand J Clin Lab Invest. 2026; 86(6):677-685.SJ
- We have previously developed a potential non-invasive fibrosis marker in the form of a lectin immunoassay for the detection of fucosylated α1-acid glycoprotein in plasma (P-AGP-FR). We aimed to investigate the diagnostic accuracy of P-AGP-FR for liver cirrhosis and fibrosis in a clinical setting of patients with chronic viral hepatitis. One hundred twenty-four patients, 80 with chronic hepatitis …

- Paired comparisons and regression to the mean - with emphasis on graphical illustrations. [Review]Scand J Clin Lab Invest. 2026; 86(6):659-676.SJ
- To review methods for graphical illustration of paired comparisons in the pretest-posttest design and present a new and simple plot, based on the waterfall plot combined with evaluation of vertical symmetry. The plot includes changes in the raw data, median changes with confidence zones and allows easy visualization of correction for regression to the mean to guide subsequent analysis of covarian…

- Analysis of consistency in aspartate aminotransferase detection results and bias correction using reference materials as calibrators. [Journal Article]Scand J Clin Lab Invest. 2026; 86(6):686-693.SJ
- CONCLUSIONS: The Beckman AST measurement procedure without PLP exhibited significant deviations from other procedures. The use of reference materials effectively reduced inter-system differences. However, the PLP-containing IFCC reference procedure cannot be applied to the traceability of PLP-free reagents, and no PLP-free reference procedure is available internationally-this constitutes the fundamental obstacle to standardization. While unified calibration may improve comparability, true standardization remains a long-term goal.

- Percentile charts for eGFR. [Journal Article]Scand J Clin Lab Invest. 2026; 86(6):621-626.SJ
- Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) serves as an overall indicator of kidney health. A sustained value below 60 mL/min/1.73 m[2] for more than 3 months confirms a diagnosis of chronic kidney disease. The same decision limit is used for patients at all ages. This may not be ideal, however, because eGFR decreases with age in healthy individuals above 40 years of age. Evidence suggests that …

- Drone transport has no impact on the stability of 32 biochemical components in blood samples from healthy individuals. [Journal Article]Scand J Clin Lab Invest. 2026; 86(6):647-658.SJ
- When blood samples for biochemical tests are collected outside the hospital the transport to the laboratory is dependent on timetables and routines of the transport companies. From islands not connected to the mainland by bridge transport is challenged and the needs of acute tests might be practically impossible to fulfill. In such situations, use of unmanned drones has great potential. In this s…

- Evaluation of HbA1c stability in refrigerated blood samples: for how long are samples fit for use? [Journal Article]Scand J Clin Lab Invest. 2026; 86(6):642-646.SJ
- HbA1c is a key biomarker for diagnosing and monitoring diabetes, but its reliability may be affected by preanalytical conditions, including sample storage. This study evaluated the stability of HbA1c in whole-blood EDTA samples stored at 2-8 °C. A pooled blood sample from 65 anonymized leftover specimens was aliquoted and measured in triplicate using capillary electrophoresis (Minicap Flex Pierci…

- Direct and indirect estimation of reference limits for hematologic parameters in adults included in the HUNT study. [Journal Article]Scand J Clin Lab Invest. 2026; 86(6):613-620.SJ
- Reliable reference limits for hematological parameters are essential for clinical interpretation. In this study, we estimated reference limits for hemoglobin, erythrocytes and MCH using direct and indirect methods on data from the Trøndelag Health Study (HUNT). Results from 53,591 men and non-pregnant women participating in HUNT4 survey were used to estimate reference limits using two indirect me…

- Longitudinal assessment of glomerular and tubular kidney function after COVID-19: a prospective cohort study. [Journal Article]Scand J Clin Lab Invest. 2026; 86(6):581-592.SJ
- CONCLUSIONS: Glomerular and tubular kidney functions remained more impaired in hospitalized COVID-19 patients compared to non-hospitalized for 6 months. We recommend eGFRcystatin C for evaluation of glomerular function during COVID-19. The tubular injury markers kidney injury molecule-1 and vascular endothelial growth factor-A were markedly elevated in hospitalized patients, consistent with more sustained interstitial inflammation. This finding suggests that these patients may require closer clinical monitoring.

- Selective association of the eGFRcys/eGFRcr ratio with hyperuricemia but not fasting glucose: a discriminant-validity analysis. [Journal Article]Scand J Clin Lab Invest. 2026; 86(6):627-641.SJ
- Shrunken Pore Syndrome (SPS), an eGFRcys/eGFRcr ratio < 0.6, is hypothesized to reflect selective glomerular filtration discordance, though its mechanism remains debated. Because an informative biomarker should associate with mechanistically related outcomes but not unrelated ones, we tested whether the continuous eGFRcys/eGFRcr ratio is selectively associated with hyperuricemia (HUA) but not ele…

- Wrongly estimated pretest probability can be harmful. [Journal Article]Scand J Clin Lab Invest. 2026; 86(6):606-612.SJ
- By necessity, a wrongly estimated pretest probability leads to a wrongly estimated posttest probability, even for correctly interpreted quantitative diagnostic test results. The effect of wrongly estimated pretest probability on the clinical utility of quantitative test results is unknown. We simulated test results from one real and two imaginary, quantitative diagnostic tests to study this issue…
