- Age-associated differences in mentalizing error profiles in schizophrenia: Evidence for a dissociation between hypo- and hyper-mentalizing. [Journal Article]Schizophr Res. 2026 Oct 09; 298:96-103. [Online ahead of print]SR
- CONCLUSIONS: Cross-sectional age differences in schizophrenia are characterized by a selective association between older age and hypo-mentalizing, whereas hyper-mentalizing shows a distinct pattern of cognitive and symptom-related correlates. These findings suggest that age is differentially associated with mentalizing error types in schizophrenia, with a selective association with hypo-mentalizing.

- Tobacco use moderates associations between cannabis use, psychiatric symptoms, and cognitive performance in psychosis spectrum disorders. [Journal Article]Schizophr Res. 2026 Oct 09; 298:88-95. [Online ahead of print]SR
- Tobacco and cannabis use are highly prevalent among individuals with psychotic disorders. Tobacco use has been consistently linked to poorer clinical and cognitive outcomes, whereas findings regarding cannabis use remain mixed. The present study was a secondary analysis of cross-sectional data from the Bipolar-Schizophrenia Network on Intermediate Phenotypes 2, a large multi-site psychosis spectr…

- Loneliness and socio-occupational functioning in psychosis: A systematic review. [Review]Schizophr Res. 2026 Oct 09; 298:121-133. [Online ahead of print]SR
- Loneliness is highly prevalent in psychosis and is associated with poorer clinical and quality-of-life outcomes. In nonclinical populations, loneliness is linked to a range of social and occupational difficulties. Difficulties with socio-occupational functioning (SOF) are common in psychosis and are consistently identified as a key recovery priority. However, the relationship between loneliness a…

- Development of non-dopamine active drugs for negative symptoms. [Journal Article]Schizophr Res. 2026 Oct 09; 298:117-120. [Online ahead of print]SR
- Most individuals affected by schizophrenia manifest negative symptoms. Because negative symptoms have a persistent deleterious effect on the social and vocational performance of the affected individuals, investigators in academia and pharmaceutical industry are making efforts to develop treatments for this condition. To be successful basic science must expand beyond attempts to interfere with the…

- Clinical and demographic characteristics associated with residual symptom severity in remitted first-episode psychosis. [Journal Article]Schizophr Res. 2026 Oct 09; 298:104-116. [Online ahead of print]SR
- CONCLUSIONS: Within a remitted first-episode psychosis population, we found that a lower socioeconomic status was associated with more residual symptoms and poorer functioning. This finding underscores the importance of addressing social determinants of health in early psychosis care, even after symptomatic remission. Future longitudinal research should test whether addressing socioeconomic needs improves outcomes in remitted first-episode psychosis.

- Toward the third generation of negative symptom assessment in schizophrenia: A systematic review of digital phenotyping measures. [Journal Article]Schizophr Res. 2026 Sep 22; 298:54-87. [Online ahead of print]SR
- CONCLUSIONS: Active and passive digital phenotyping measures demonstrate promise for measuring negative symptoms in ways that overcome limitations of clinical rating scales. However, the psychometric validation studies conducted to date have been completed in small samples, used disparate methodologies, and not evaluated the full range of negative symptoms or technologies that may be relevant. Recommendations are provided to facilitate progress.

- Command auditory verbal hallucinations in a culturally diverse early intervention in psychosis service: Prevalence, clinical associations and phenomenology. [Journal Article]Schizophr Res. 2026 Oct 08; 298:44-53. [Online ahead of print]SR
- CONCLUSIONS: Findings suggest that CAVH are prevalent and clinically important in FEP, and that incorporating phenomenological predictors can inform compliance prediction. Detailed assessment of CAVH characteristics, combined with personalized early intervention and safeguarding, may help reduce the risk of harmful outcomes.

- EEG predictors of transition from clinical high risk to psychotic disorders: A systematic review with implications for data harmonisation. [Review]Schizophr Res. 2026 Oct 07; 298:9-24. [Online ahead of print]SR
- CONCLUSIONS: Achieving reliable predictive sensitivity from EEG biomarkers is difficult during the clinically and diagnostically heterogeneous CHR period. Inconsistency across EEG methodologies and outcome definitions likely contributes to variability in reported prognostic effects. Recommendations are provided to improve methodological consistency and support future biomarker research.

- Altered pain processing and associated neural circuitry disruptions in adolescents with early-onset psychosis. [Journal Article]Schizophr Res. 2026 Oct 07; 298:34-43. [Online ahead of print]SR
- CONCLUSIONS: This study shows a preliminarily association between disruptions in cortico-striatal-thalamic circuitry, pain processing, and somatosensory disturbances in EOP. Upon further longitudinal validation in a larger cohort, markers of altered pain processing may provide a clinically accessible index of neurobiological disturbances underlying psychopathology in EOP.

- Astrocytic activity in treatment-resistant and ultra-treatment-resistant schizophrenia. [Journal Article]Schizophr Res. 2026 Oct 07; 298:25-33. [Online ahead of print]SR
- Astrocytic dysfunction has been implicated in schizophrenia, but biomarkers of astrocytic activity have shown inconsistent patterns. Studies on disease heterogeneity, specifically treatment-resistant schizophrenia (TRS) and ultra-treatment-resistant schizophrenia (UTRS) are lacking. In this study, plasma glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) was measured using an ultrasensitive Simoa assay in 17…

- Hippocampal volume and persistent distressing psychotic-like experiences across early adolescence: the moderating role of physical activity. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: Reduced right HV was associated with persistent distressing PLEs, with a weaker association observed among youth with greater team sports participation, suggesting a potential role of physical activity and social context. Findings warrant further investigation of features of team-based activities as potential modifiable factors in future prevention research.

- Hypervigilance, suspiciousness, and the paranoia spectrum: A latent factor structure and measurement invariance investigation. [Journal Article]Schizophr Res. 2026 Oct 05; 298:1-8. [Online ahead of print]SR
- Hypervigilance and suspiciousness are conceptually overlapping constructs included in measures of paranoia spectrum symptoms. However, no studies have examined the structural relationship between these constructs. Additionally, few studies have investigated whether ethnoracial differences in hypervigilance and suspiciousness are confounded by measurement properties. We hypothesized that the struc…

- Two-year domain-specific cognitive trajectories following a first episode of psychosis and early intervention: A data-driven study. [Journal Article]Schizophr Res. 2026 Nov; 297:659-668.SR

Domain-specific analyses revealed associations with clinical outcomes not apparent from global cognition alone, highlighting the importance of early identification and personalized cognitive interventions in FEP.

- Cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between temperament and delusional ideation. [Journal Article]Schizophr Res. 2026 Nov; 297:643-650.SR
- CONCLUSIONS: Assessing temperament as predispositions through a comprehensive approach is crucial for advancing the understanding of individual predispositions associated with developing DI. Our findings suggest Negative Affect represents a core vulnerability to DI, especially Paranoia, which is critical to inform targeted prevention.
