- Statement of the Public Affairs Committee of the Teratology Society on the fetal alcohol syndrome. [Journal Article]Teratology. 2002 Dec; 66(6):344-7.T
- Quantification and localization of expression of the retinoic acid receptor-beta and -gamma mRNA isoforms during neurulation in mouse embryos with or without spina bifida. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: In RA-treated embryos, the relationship between RARbeta expression in the closed and RARgamma in the open caudal neuroepithelium was not altered. However, in splotch embryos with spina bifida, the juncture between RARbeta and RARgamma expression remained in the same anatomical position in the neuroepithelium irrespective of the neural tube closure status and suggests that the switch from RARgamma to RARbeta expression in the closing caudal neuroepithelium may not be causally linked to neural tube closure in the splotch mutant.
- Timing of prenatal care initiation and risk of congenital malformations. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: This is the first large-scale study of the association of timing of prenatal care initiation and congenital malformation risks. Further defining the phenomena that surround prenatal care as a marker may help clarify the etiologies of a variety of malformations.
- A new rapid radiological procedure for routine teratological use in bone ossification assessment: a supplement for staining methods. [Journal Article]Teratology. 2002 Dec; 66(6):315-25.T
- CONCLUSIONS: The preliminary results suggest that digital radiography examination is a useful method in determining delaying of skeleton ossification not detectable by other methods. It balances qualitative and quantitative aspects of the presently used methods and is also simple, objective, fast, and relatively inexpensive.
- Dose and litter allocations in the design of teratological studies for detecting hormesis. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: Through appropriate modifications of current experimental designs, such as reallocation of litters and even dose spacing, we can better detect hormetic effects.
- Effect of sera from women with systemic lupus erythematosus or antiphospholipid syndrome and recurrent abortions on human placental explants in culture. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: We conclude that sera from women with SLE may directly damage the developing placenta reducing proliferation and enhancing apoptosis. Successful treatment of the women reduces that damage.
- Role of caspases in murine limb bud cell death induced by 4-hydroperoxycyclophosphamide, an activated analog of cyclophosphamide. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: Caspase-dependent and caspase-independent pathways of cell death are both important is mediating the abnormal limb development triggered by insult with 4-OOHCPA.
- Diprosopus: a unique case and review of the literature. [Case Reports]
- CONCLUSIONS: The pathogenesis is believed to involve duplication of the notochord. Where there are more severe associated anomalies, the prognosis is poor. Partial facial duplication, as in our case, is associated with fewer anomalies, and the prognosis is better. Symmetry and an excess of tissue, rather than deficiency, favor a positive result.
- Conjoined twins in a monozygotic triplet pregnancy: prenatal diagnosis and X-inactivation. [Case Reports]
- CONCLUSIONS: Genetic or environmental factors other than abnormal X-inactivation must be involved in causing monozygous multiple gestation or CTS. Despite prenatal diagnosis, shared myocardium or cardiac anomalies in CTS often determine the prognosis.
- 13C-NMR study of hypoglycemia-induced glycolytic changes in embryonic mouse heart. [Journal Article]Teratology. 2002 Nov; 66(5):267-72.T
- CONCLUSIONS: NMR effectively measures glucose and its metabolite, lactate, in the same spectrum and thus determines metabolic flux in the isolated embryonic heart after exposure to hypoglycemia and normoglycemia. This method could evaluate glucose metabolism in embryonic tissues following other teratogenic exposures.
- Orofacial clefts and spina bifida: N-acetyltransferase phenotype, maternal smoking, and medication use. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: Maternal smoking and medication use is associated with orofacial cleft risk as well as medication use is with spina bifida. The maternal NAT2 acetylator status, however, was not associated with an increased risk for orofacial cleft or spina bifida offspring, nor in combination with periconceptional smoking or medication use.
- Apolipoprotein E and apolipoprotein B genotypes and risk for spina bifida. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: Results from this study suggest that genetic variations in the apoE and apoB genes, known to regulate cholesterol metabolism, do not substantially contribute to the risk of SB in infants.
- Decline of neural tube defects cases after a folic acid campaign in Nuevo León, México. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: After 2 years there was a 50% decrease in the incidence of anencephaly and spina bifida cases with a significant reduction of infant mortality and disability. These results encourage us to propose the use of a single tablet of 5.0-mg of folic acid per week as an alternative to supplementation on a daily basis.
