- Stage-specific alignment between operational loss and rear-end conflict exposure during traffic oscillations. [Journal Article]Traffic Inj Prev. 2026 Oct 16; :1-12. [Online ahead of print]TI
- CONCLUSIONS: Operational loss and rear-end conflict exposure are related but not interchangeable. Their association varies across oscillation stages and reflects different behavioral and kinematic patterns. The proposed stage-specific framework supports joint evaluation of traffic efficiency and safety and may inform longitudinal control strategies that balance the two objectives.

- Challenges with properly positioning children treated with a hip spica cast: Does the vehicle or cast type matter? [Journal Article]Traffic Inj Prev. 2026 Oct 16; :1-9. [Online ahead of print]TI
- CONCLUSIONS: Hip spica casts substantially affect the ability to properly restrain children in passenger vehicles. Older forward-facing children were considerably more likely to achieve a proper restraint condition than younger rear-facing children. Cast type, vehicle interior geometry, and CSS design all influenced successful installation. Vehicles with greater interior space, such as minivans, and CSS designs accommodating cast geometry were more likely to allow proper restraint.

- Consensus machine learning for interpretable road-user fatality risk analysis: Evidence from the Canadian National Collision Database. [Journal Article]Traffic Inj Prev. 2026 Oct 16; :1-11. [Online ahead of print]TI
- CONCLUSIONS: The proposed CML framework consistently identified important predictors across multiple machine-learning algorithms and reporting years, providing a robust and interpretable approach to understanding fatal collision risk. Two of the defined categories, crash characteristics and traffic and environmental conditions, were identified as key feature sets for predicting collision fatalities. These findings provide evidence to support engineering, policy, enforcement, and education initiatives aimed at reducing fatal collisions while highlighting the value of consensus-based machine learning as a complementary decision-support tool for transportation safety planning.

- Crash-type heterogeneity and cross-year transfer stability in injury severity modeling. [Journal Article]Traffic Inj Prev. 2026 Oct 16; :1-10. [Online ahead of print]TI
- CONCLUSIONS: The major risk factors and their relative importance differed across crash types, supporting crash-type-specific interpretation of injury severity. The predictor-by-year screening produced BH-adjusted q values above the prespecified threshold for all estimable blocks, while later-year discrimination, calibration, and high-risk case identification varied across models. Cross-year model performance should therefore be evaluated using probability calibration and high-risk-set stability in addition to AUC. The findings characterize the analyzed NAIS sample and provide model-conditioned evidence for crash-type-specific risk assessment.

- Effects of performing work-related secondary tasks during simulated driving: Comparison of text/voicemail and virtual meeting engagement. [Journal Article]Traffic Inj Prev. 2026 Oct 16; :1-11. [Online ahead of print]TI
- CONCLUSIONS: Work-related secondary tasks, even when largely passive, were associated with reduced visual attention to the roadway, increased off-road glance behavior and changes in aspects of vehicle control during simulated driving. These findings suggest that performing connectivity-based work-related secondary tasks while driving may pose risks to safe driving and warrant further investigation in representative occupational driving populations.

- Bone microarchitecture, density, and strength assessment in automotive trauma patients using HR-pQCT: a pilot study. [Journal Article]Traffic Inj Prev. 2026 Oct 15; :1-10. [Online ahead of print]TI
- CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates the viability of HR-pQCT for characterizing bone microarchitecture, strength, and density in automotive trauma patients and identifying differences that might relate to fracture and bone-related comorbidities. These preliminary findings support incorporating HR-pQCT imaging into automotive crash research due to its ability to provide detailed cortical and trabecular microarchitectural measurements that are not available from clinical CT.

- Spatiotemporal characteristics of traffic accidents on a high-volume expressway with closely spaced interchanges. [Journal Article]Traffic Inj Prev. 2026 Oct 14; :1-12. [Online ahead of print]TI
- CONCLUSIONS: On the studied high-volume expressway, traffic accidents showed pronounced spatiotemporal clustering. Accident counts were positively associated with high-flow-event frequency in most analyzed direction-period combinations, while interchange weaving areas and variable-gradient sections contained notable accident concentrations. The findings may inform time- and location-specific crash-prevention measures on similar facilities, but their transferability should be evaluated using exposure and severity data from additional corridors.

- An enhanced framework for automated vehicle crash severity prediction under unobserved heterogeneity using natural language processing and data augmentation. [Journal Article]Traffic Inj Prev. 2026 Oct 14; :1-9. [Online ahead of print]TI
- CONCLUSIONS: Although the article is based on historical traffic crash data, this article supports proactive AV safety assessment by transforming the crash narratives and structured variables into influencing insights on severe traffic crash risk. The integrated application of various modeling identifies latent crash patterns, that are often obscured in imbalanced AV crash datasets. These insights can help policymakers and manufacturers prioritize scenario-based testing, monitor recurring high-risk conditions involving road environments and design treatments for mixed-traffic environments. Rather than claiming methodological novelty or broad adaptability, this study demonstrates the practical value of combining established methods to analyze heterogeneous and imbalanced AV crash data.

- Unraveling the spatial heterogeneity of urban traffic crashes: A GeoXGBoost and point-mapping SHAP framework. [Journal Article]Traffic Inj Prev. 2026 Oct 14; :1-10. [Online ahead of print]TI
- CONCLUSIONS: A deep interactive coupling mechanism of "place-exposure-function" is identified. Standalone static facilities and population scale constitute only potential hazards; however, when superimposed with high-load dynamic traffic flows or highly mixed functions, they trigger an abrupt, nonlinear surge in local crash probabilities. This framework provides a scientific basis for fine-grained, location-specific spatial interventions in urban traffic safety governance.

- Quantifying drivers' visual strategies in tunnel approaches under foggy and nighttime conditions using saccadic measures. [Journal Article]Traffic Inj Prev. 2026 Oct 07; :1-10. [Online ahead of print]TI
- CONCLUSIONS: Foggy nighttime tunnel approaches induce a distinct visual-search strategy characterized by slower, more frequent, and spatially localized gaze shifts. Under compounded adverse conditions, drivers appear to concentrate visual sampling on the central forward roadway area while experiencing reduced efficiency in gaze reorientation. These findings highlight the importance of continuous visual guidance, enhanced entrance delineation, advance warnings, and weather-responsive safety management for tunnel approaches under foggy nighttime conditions.

- Incidence proportion of post-crash incident psychosis by traffic road user group and its association with clinical outcomes: a nationwide Community-based Severe Trauma Survey (2016-2023). [Journal Article]Traffic Inj Prev. 2026; 27(sup1):S46-S53.TI
- CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study showed that post-crash incident psychosis varied significantly by traffic road user group and was most commonly observed among vehicle occupants. Incident psychosis was also independently associated with worse in-hospital outcomes, suggesting that psychosis-like presentations may serve as markers of high-risk clinical trajectories during hospitalization, timely psychiatric consultation, and structured follow-up pathways into traffic trauma care.
