  • The bacteriology of fallen leaves (Phylloplane) from council parks and green spaces in Northern Ireland: Clinical significance for at risk people living with cystic fibrosis (CF). [Journal Article]
Ulster Med J. 2026 Oct; 95(2):54-65.Millar BC, Dabai AI, … Moore JEUM
  • CONCLUSIONS: Fallen leaves isolated from public parks and green spaces in Northern Ireland were shown to harbour a diverse variety of bacteria, some of which have been isolated from respiratory specimens from children living with CF. None of these bacteria including the co-isolated species represented clinically significant respiratory pathogens of the CF lung and were regarded as transient colonisers of the CF lung. Pseudomonas aeruginosa was not identified in this study originating from fallen leaves. When deciding on the relative risk of children living with CF playing with leaves, parents of children living with CF need to make an informed decision, balancing the sensory exploration of nature through interaction with leaves, as well as physical, emotional and social benefits gained from nature play, with the relative risk of exposure to environmental organisms.
  • A Test for the Profession: Medicine in Nazi Germany. [Historical Article]
    Ulster Med J. 2026 Oct; 95(2):87-91.Trimble MUM
  • In this paper I will chart the development of the medical sub-culture within Nazi German society. I intend to show that ethical regulation provided by professional societies, state, and the legal system were inadequate and failed to prevent the atrocities perpetrated by Nazi doctors and that the acceptance of the concept of "a life not worth living" was a key turning point in medical culture and …

  • Investigating the Role of Tetranectin in Ischaemic Heart Disease and Heart Failure. [Journal Article]
    Ulster Med J. 2026 Oct; 95(2):96-97.Bhandari A, Edgar K, … Watson CUM
  • CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study will help clarify the attributes of tetranectin and its relationship with fibrosis and inflammation following myocardial injury. The use of plasma tetranectin may serve as a potential biomarker in HF, specifically differentiating between patients presenting with symptoms of breathlessness but have normal heart function or AHF.
  • Investigating Iron Deficiency Anaemia in the Elderly. [Journal Article]
    Ulster Med J. 2026 Jun; 95(1):11-17.Galea A, Cauchi S, … Ellul PUM
  • CONCLUSIONS: Elderly patients referred for investigation of IDA frequently have a high CCI score, making endoscopy a high-risk procedure. A high CCI score and living in a care home are independent risk factors for one-year mortality. Alternative strategies including trans-nasal endoscopy and CT colonography, should be considered as first-line tests to balance diagnostic yield, prognosis and procedural safety.
