- Cell culture medium influences RSV G protein glycosylation and recognition by monoclonal antibodies. [Journal Article]
- Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) glycoprotein G is heavily glycosylated and of variable size following virus growth in transformed cell lines or primary cells. However, it is unknown if the cell culture medium can influence the patterns of glycosylation. Therefore, we tested whether the choice of culture medium can affect the glycosylation of RSV G protein, viral infectivity and antibody recogni…

- Regulatory roles of G-quadruplexes and G-quadruplex-binding proteins across the enhancer and promoter of the HBV genome. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: This study reveals that two G4 structures within the HBV CP/EN regulatory region function as structural platforms for host factor recruitment and play distinct roles in regulating viral gene expression. In particular, the 1732 G4 facilitates HNF4A-dependent activation of CP/EN activity, thereby supporting efficient viral protein production, whereas CNBP promotes HBV expression through a CP/EN-independent mechanism.

- Genomic surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 in Tunisia during the omicron era: insights from the national influenza & other respiratory viruses laboratory. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: Rapid Omicron sublineage turnover and co-detections with other respiratory viruses, including influenza, were captured by genomic monitoring integrated into Tunisia's influenza-based sentinel network, which achieved broad sequencing coverage and overall near-proportional sampling despite subnational heterogeneity. This integrated, multi-pathogen approach provides a scalable model for sustained genomic surveillance and future respiratory pandemic preparedness in the region.

- Revisiting HPV integration landscapes using telomere-to-telomere human genome reference closes the gaps in HPV integration sites search. [Journal Article]
- Accurate characterization of human papillomavirus (HPV) integration into the host genome is essential for understanding HPV-driven carcinogenesis. However, most previous integration studies relied on incomplete human reference genomes, potentially obscuring integration events occurring within highly repetitive genomic regions. Here, we reassessed HPV integration landscapes using the first complet…

- Incidence, pathogenesis, clinical manifestations, and pharmacological management of the 2026 Andes virus outbreak. [Review]
- Hantavirus is considered as a fatal zoonotic pathogen that can be commonly transmitted from rodents to humans. However, the Andes virus (ANDV), a type of New World hantavirus, can also be transmitted from human to human. It is the cause of the 2026 hantavirus outbreak on a cruise ship. Hantavirus can rapidly progress to a severe respiratory distress, known as hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome (…

- Drivers of the paradigm shift in norovirus diagnostics: technological innovation, contextual demands, and collaborative synergy. [Review]
- This paper systematically reviews paradigm shifts in diagnostic technologies for norovirus. Given the substantial burden of acute gastroenteritis caused by this virus and the current lack of licensed antiviral therapies, early and accurate diagnosis is of paramount importance. Diagnostic technologies have evolved from electron microscopy and immunological assays to molecular detection methods, wi…

- Full genome sequencing, evolutionary dynamics, and pathogenicity evaluation of chicken infectious anemia virus with emphasis on Upper Egypt reveals genetic variability linked to vaccinal strains. [Journal Article]
- Despite intensive vaccination efforts, Chicken Infectious Anemia Virus (CIAV) remains a formidable threat to the Egyptian poultry industry, primarily through the emergence of vaccine-escape variants. While most studies have focused on Northern Egypt, there is a critical knowledge gap regarding the viral landscape in the Southern provinces. This study provides the most extensive surveillance to da…

- A dried blood spot protocol for high-throughput semi-quantitative analysis of Epstein-Barr Virus VCA IgG and EBNA IgG serologies based on the Roche Elecsys system. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: We established DBS-specific cutoff values to detect antibodies against EBV in DBS, achieving high sensitivity (98.8%) and specificity (96.5%) relative to the corresponding venous blood assay. Furthermore, we derived a correction formula to convert semi-quantitative DBS values to serum-equivalents, enabling comparison with other studies and standardized datasets. The DBS-based approach allows sero-status assessment in a large population and thus e.g. simplifies the identification of suitable participants for clinical trials.

- NGS-diagnosed HBV encephalitis with isolated left parietal lobe involvement: a case report. [Case Reports]
- CONCLUSIONS: Central nervous system (CNS) infections caused by HBV are incredibly uncommon in clinical practice. This case highlights that the clinical manifestations of HBV encephalitis are nonspecific and prone to being missed, while neuroimaging often reveals an isolated lesion. Early application of NGS for accurate pathogen diagnosis is crucial to reduce misdiagnosis.

- Generation and immunological evaluation of SARS-CoV-2 membrane protein virus-like particles. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: Our study demonstrates that the highly conserved M protein can self-assemble into VLPs and elicit humoral and cellular immune response. Furthermore, our study indicates that while M-protein VLPs elicit significant antibodies and cytokine responses, they do not induce detectable neutralizing activity when given alone.
