  • Ensuring a reliable blood supply during a pandemic in a Caribbean setting: The Curaçao experience. [Journal Article]
Vox Sang. 2026 Oct 22. [Online ahead of print]Duits AJ, Sillé L, Smid WMVS
  • CONCLUSIONS: For SIDS, effective small-scale implementation of international recommendations on pandemics remains challenging. The national blood program preparedness model of Curaçao proved to be successful during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensuring uninterrupted donor participation and sufficient labile blood product availability. Key success factors of the model were a voluntary, non-remunerated, repetitive donor program, a central blood collection facility, acknowledgement of the blood bank as important in the public health pandemic response, and effective communication with donors, hospitals, and health authorities.
  • Comprehensive analysis of Lewis antigen expression patterns in a Chinese blood donor cohort. [Journal Article]
Vox Sang. 2026 Oct 20. [Online ahead of print]Zheng J, Zhang Y, … Xiang DVS
  • CONCLUSIONS: Erythrocyte Lewis antigen abundance is primarily governed by competitive substrate utilisation of a common type 1 precursor glycan by FUT2 and FUT3 glycosyltransferases. The residual heterogeneity indicates additional host factors beyond these three loci. This study validates the classic Seʷ partial-secretor model in a Chinese cohort and provides population reference data, rather than reporting unrecognised biosynthetic pathways.
  • Sex- and age-specific daily and seasonal rhythms in haemoglobin and ferritin among Dutch blood donors. [Journal Article]
Vox Sang. 2026 Oct 14. [Online ahead of print]Wehrens SMT, Meulenbeld A, … van den Hurk KVS
  • CONCLUSIONS: The cosinor behaviour of cHb levels during the day may indicate contribution of circadian physiology. An earlier cHb peak time in older donors agrees with the known association between 'morningness' and older age. These results support the interpretation of cHb and ferritin measurements in clinical practice and may fuel further research into underlying mechanisms.
