- [Immunohistochemical C5b-9-complement complex demonstration in early stages of myocardial necroses using paraffin sections]. [Journal Article]
- With conventional staining techniques it was nearly impossible to differentiate with certainty between early ischemic myocardial lesions, autolytic changes and intact myocardium without a nuclear section. In 1986 it was introduced an immunohistochemical method, which presented C5b-9 Complement Complex as a necrosis marker in cryostat sections. Our further development of this process has resulted …
- [Genetically-induced variability of alcohol metabolism and its effect on drinking behavior and predisposition to alcoholism]. [Review]
- Alcoholism is one of the most challenging current health problems in the Western countries with far-reaching medical, social, and economic consequences. There are a series of factors that interact in predisposing or protecting an individual against alcoholism and alcohol-related disorders. This article surveys the state of our knowledge concerning the biochemical and genetic variations in alcohol…
- [Special design characteristics of the Japanese "Tan-to" (knife) as criteria for dangerousness]. [Journal Article]
- The great angle gauge of the blade top and the asymmetrical sharpening of the edge, the thickness of the blade (nearly 0.3 cm) and especially the short sharpened blade top give excellent stability of the cutting edge of this instrument and of its blade top. Flat bones can be perforated very easily without damaging the blade top. In recent times a newly developed Japanese tan-to is available in th…
- [Changes in skeletal muscles in death caused by hypothermia]. [Journal Article]
- The review of 32 deaths resulting from hypothermia yielded mostly the common pathological findings as bright red livores, haemolytic frost marks of the skin and Wichnewski erosions of the gastric mucosa. In addition the muscle system of the body core (musc. ileopsoas) showed hemorrhages and histologically necrosis of its fibres in form of segmental and discoid sarcoplasmatic alteration. These cha…
- The extent of aspartic acid racemization in dentin: a possible method for a more accurate determination of age at death? [Journal Article]
- In the current study the objective was to find to what extent a reliable determination of age at death is made possible by establishing the degree of aspartic acid racemization in the dentin of teeth. The results of the investigation of 46 teeth are in agreement with the values found by other authors. The method presented makes a reproducible and accurate estimation of age possible. We intend to …
- Gc in bloodstains. [Journal Article]Z Rechtsmed. 1990; 103(6):453-6.ZR
- Gc-subtyping was carried out on blood stains that had been made on cotton and glass and stored under a variety of conditions ranging from -20 degrees to +56 degrees C. The limits of detection ranged from 2 weeks at 56 degrees C up to 92 weeks at +4 degrees C and greater than 116 weeks at -20 degrees C. Additional bands that have been reported in other studies could not be detected during this stu…
- [Postmortem behavior of the rheobase]. [Journal Article]
- Own investigations on the postmortem rise of muscular threshold were conducted on 20 bodies with exactly known time of death. Muscular contraction was objectified using a sensitive force transducer. The muscle was excitated using rectangular impulses of 1 second duration of a current intensity which produces a force of muscular contraction of 2.5 mN. These excitations were continued over the post…
- [Histologic findings in the lung in sudden infant death]. [Journal Article]
- The lungs of 79 children who had died between the ages of 1 week and 2 years old were histologically examined. 59 of these children could be categorized as cases of Sudden Infant Death because of the history and postmortem findings. In the remaining 20 cases a definite cause of death could be established. This is the same collective on which the histological investigations of the lymphatic tissue…
- [Histologic studies of lymphatic tissue in sudden infant death]. [Journal Article]
- The lymphatic tissues (lymph nodes, spleen, thymus) were examined in 79 children who had died between the ages of one week and two years old. 59 of these children could be categorized as Sudden Infant Death because of their history and postmortem findings. In the remaining 20 cases a definite cause of death could be established. The demonstrated morphological reaction patterns which have differen…
- [HIV-1 prevalence in deaths caused by drug overdose in various large cities of West Germany and West Berlin between 1985 and 1988]. [Journal Article]
- The development of the HIV-1-prevalence among drug deaths (n = 753) in several German cities (West Berlin, Frankfurt, Munich, Hamburg, Bremen, Cologne and Stuttgart) from 1985 to 1988 was evaluated; in 1988 43% of 674 deceased drug addicts were examined. The regional prevalence rate was between 15 and 25%; only in Berlin 42% of the drug deaths were HIV-infected (cumulated data of all cities over …
- [Sudden death of a young asthmatic patient--allergic granulomatous angiitis (Churg-Strauss syndrome)]. [Case Reports]
- Churg-Strauss syndrome has three main criterions: 1) severe asthma with fever attacks, 2) extra- and intravascular granulomatous proliferations of epitheloid and giant cells, 3) inflammatory infiltrates rich in eosinophilic leukocytes. All these features were given in the case of a 19-year-old woman, who died suddenly. This paper deals with the morphological findings of the forensic autopsy.
- Sudden death due to bilateral spontaneous pneumothorax caused by rupture of congenital lung cysts. [Case Reports]
- A case of sudden death of a 35-year-old woman due to spontaneous bilateral pneumothorax from rupture of congenital lung cysts is reported. The woman had been attended by two doctors before the lethal outcome. The medicolegal aspects pertaining to medical negligence, the diagnostic difficulties and the rare occurrence of the condition are discussed, as is the autopsy procedure.
- [Thyroglobulin content of the blood in cases of hanging]. [Journal Article]
- Thyroglobulin (Tg) was determined in serum of heart blood from the bodies of 24 people who had died by hanging. In contrast to cases of sudden death (Tg 22.7 +/- 13.5 ng/ml) the Tg values varied over a wide range (from 12 to more than 400 ng/ml). The highest concentrations were observed in cases of incomplete suspension, e.g. hanging in a sitting or semi-reclining posture. We conclude that the du…
- Factor B subtyping in sera and bloodstains by isoelectric focusing and immunoblotting. [Journal Article]
- The polymorphism of BF was investigated in 765 unrelated Japanese individuals by isoelectric focusing and immunoblotting. Besides five common subtypes three rare variants were observed. The allele frequencies were: BF*S = 0.8078, BF*FA = 0.1797, BF*FB = 0.0105, BF*Var. = 0.0020. The above method was successfully applied to subtyping BF in stored bloodstains. The determination limits were: at 4 de…
- [Presence of methadone in apocrine sweat of the human]. [Journal Article]
- The presence of methadone was investigated in 24-h perspiration samples obtained from patients receiving daily maintenance doses of the drug. The samples were collected from the axillary region. The concentrations measured by radioimmunoassay ranged from 8.3 ng/cm2 per 24 h up to 25.3 ng/cm2 per 24 h. The concentrations determined by RIA are the sum of methadone and its metabolites. The presence …
