- [Digital Twins in Surgery]. [Journal Article]Zentralbl Chir. 2026 Jul 13. [Online ahead of print]ZC
- CONCLUSIONS: Despite promising approaches, digital twins in surgery are still largely in the early stages of development. Challenges exist in particular in data quality, model validation, and ethical and legal issues. Overall, digital twins have the potential to change surgical processes in the long term.

- [Preventing Complications in Hepatopancreatobiliary Surgery]. [Journal Article]Zentralbl Chir. 2026 Jul 08. [Online ahead of print]ZC
- Hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB) surgery is among the most complex fields in visceral surgery, and is associated with significant morbidity and mortality rates. This article provides a brief overview of current evidence-based strategies for the prevention of typical complications: post-hepatectomy liver failure (PHLF), bile leaks, postoperative pancreatic fistulas (POPF), delayed gastric emptying (DG…

- The introduction and ongoing development of minimally invasive surgical techniques have fundamentally transformed thoracic surgery in recent years. In parallel, anaesthesiological concepts have been developed with reduced invasiveness and fewer complications that aim for faster recovery. These include, for example, video-assisted thoracoscopy without the use of endotracheal intubation (non-intuba…

- [Treatment of Vocal Fold Paralysis]. [Journal Article]Zentralbl Chir. 2026 Jul 02. [Online ahead of print]ZC
- Vocal cord paralysis significantly impairs the quality of life of those affected. Unilateral paresis primarily causes glottal closure insufficiency, weak voice, and hoarseness. Bilateral paresis, on the other hand, impairs breathing and limits physical capacity. For over a hundred years, various biomaterials have been used to treat unilateral vocal cord paralysis, including tissue transfer, injec…

- Predictive Factors for Mediastinal Lymph Node Metastases in Patients with Non-small Cell Lung Cancer, as Detected by Video-assisted Mediastinoscopic Lymphadenectomy. [Journal Article]Zentralbl Chir. 2026 Jun 16. [Online ahead of print]ZC
- CONCLUSIONS: Mediastinal lymph node involvement in NSCLC is not restricted to patients with abnormal PET/CT findings. Central tumours, adenocarcinoma or lesions > 3 cm should undergo invasive staging, regardless of imaging appearance.

- CONCLUSIONS: Robot-assisted management of bile duct injuries should be considered in patients with prior laparoscopic surgery. Roux-en-Y reconstruction incorporating the cystic duct stump to preserve the option of ERCP is a viable treatment strategy for leaks originating from larger aberrant bile ducts.

- CONCLUSIONS: Microvascular reconstruction extends the therapeutic spectrum for LTJ surgery beyond conventional resection techniques and can provide a functional airway in highly complex situations and with acceptable morbidity. Given the limited evidence base from case series, interdisciplinary planning and centralisation of these procedures in experienced centres are essential.

- [Evaluation of Multimodal Perioperative Care Pathway Supported by a Patient-facing Mobile App in Colorectal Surgery - First Clinical Experience and Patient Satisfaction]. [Journal Article]Zentralbl Chir. 2026 Jun 08. [Online ahead of print]ZC
- CONCLUSIONS: The results of this pilot study demonstrate that multimodal digital patient guidance throughout the entire perioperative pathway in colorectal surgery is feasible and well accepted. Digital applications can effectively support prehabilitation, enhance patients' perceived sense of safety, promote self-management, and relieve organisational processes. However, larger prospective studies are required to reliably assess clinical outcome parameters and health economic effects.

- [Perioperative Molecular Testing in Non-small Cell Lung Cancer]. [Review]Zentralbl Chir. 2026 Jun; 151(3):316-327.ZC
- Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is known to exhibit high tumor heterogeneity, and molecular alterations can be detected in a relevant proportion of patients. These alterations may permit the use of targeted therapy but also have important implications for the use of other therapies particularly immune checkpoint inhibitors. Therefore, comprehensive characterization of the molecular profile is …

- CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that a significant number of young colleagues suffer from a critically low well-being status. With this study, we wish to raise awareness for this important issue. The survey will be continued, in order to broaden the data base for further evaluation, and also to tailor specific offers for help.
