Vázquez de Quevedo F [Eugenio Gutiérrez, count of San Diego, and his contribution to Spanish gynecology (150 years from his birth)] [Biography, Historical Article, Journal Article] An R Acad Nac Med (Madr) 2002; 119(1):55-71; discussion 72-6.
The author presents the history of E. Gutiérrez González, born in Santander, Cantabria (Spain). He analyses Dr. Gutiérrez's work and his contribution to the study of gynaecology as a new speciality in Spain. Gutiérrez belonged to the positivist movement (1850-1914) when general surgery experienced a considerable boom with the arrival of antiseptics, asepsis and anesthesia. For 34 years, he was in charge of the Gynaecology Surgery Service in "El Instituto Rubio" of Madrid and doctor of the Royal House. There were also other relevant doctors at that time: Alonso Rubio, Fargas Roca, Recasens Girol in Gynaecology, and San Martín, Ribera and Cardenal in General Surgerie.
