Abstract	Many healthcare disciplines provide patient education, yet few receive specific training in the field. This article describes the assessment, development, implementation, and evaluation of a patient education core competency/orientation program for patient educators. This model can be applied and tailored to specific disciplines to improve the knowledge, understanding, and application of patient education theory, principles, and practice.
