AbstractA novel method for the cyclotrimerization of dimethylcyanamide to form hexamethylmelamine has been developed using an aluminium amide catalyst; detailed DFT modelling of the catalytic cycle supports a triple insertion, nucleophilic ring closure, deinsertion mechanism.
