Recently, a number of artemisinin derivatives such as artesunate, artemether, dihydroartemisinin, and arteether have been developed and have found widespread clinical use because of their efficacy against resistant forms of all plasmodial species and a favorable side-effect profile. However, concerns have been expressed about the neurotoxic effects of artemisinin derivatives based on some animal and human studies.
